I haven't read any of the threads about the match so forgive me for no doubt repeating what has already been said, but that was a fucking disgrace last night.

Everyone goes on about the lack of talent and quality in the side, but last night there we had more than enough quality to at least play better than that and give it a proper go against a very very average side. It was desperate, lazy and embarrassing. I don't think I've ever seen the air have more possession than either side.

I remember watching Fulham once or twice in Europe last year and even they actually managed to play some decent football now again despite being a lesser side.

I was shocked last night. We had no movement, no purpose and just hoofed it every time.
Skrtel, Carra and Wilson were awful and the worst culprits.

I have to say, I was very little impressed with Kenny last night. He just allowed them to carry on with the luftwaffe approach.

One - 1- time did Johnson get to the byline and cross. Something we should have done a lot more. When is Carroll the most dangerous? When the crosses are hit from the byline or the edge of the penalty box. We hit it from our own half and the midfield area, hopeless.

Kuyt seemed to have forgotten how the offside rule works. Meireles and Lucas passed it sideways or to a Braga player. And Maxi and Cole didn't want to be out on the wing at all, which made our side horribly narrow and easy to control.

It was a shite game. Terrible.

We need 5 new players. And someone to have a word to the hoofers.

Kenny got this one horribly wrong. The players performed dreadfully but they must have been told to hoof it up to Carroll all night long. Awful approach, awful tactics.

Kenny said Carroll wouldnt change the way he wanted us to play. Now, we don't have the players yet to utilize his strengths, but yesterday was indeed awful.

Suarez was sorley missed last night. Mainly for his movement, which will be excellent around Carroll.

With 2 pacey wingers out wide that can actually beat a man and put a cross in, we would look much more like a team.

If we're honest, we need a centre back, a left back, a central midfielder, a winger and maybe even another striker. I won't lose sleep if I never see half that team play again.

What was with Wilson aswell? He looked terrified for 80 minutes whenever he got the ball, even taking a throw in looked a big ask, then all of a sudden he starts getting all cultured and passing it around with ease when we needed the urgency there. Baffling. I'm not convinced but it's only early days.

He didn't look terrified, he looked puzzled.
He was wondering where the left winger was.
We had no width what so ever last night.

We had the most narrow team I've ever seen last night.

I wont lose any sleep if Maxi, Cole, Poulsen, Jova and Skrtel leave.

At least Roy knew how to win in the UEFA Cup ... 😉

Well how to be a finalist anyway 😉

can't blame a center back for not shining in a fullback position.

I don't think Kenny should take much of the blame for last night, look who he had to pick from.

The tactics were awful to start with, which you can forgive (see 2005), but it was his persistence with them that made it so bad. He got it awfully wrong, I'm afraid.

It's easy to blame the manager when we see a performance like last nights + I'm not convinced that Kenny simply told them to hoof the ball up to Andy.

He had a piss poor bunch of players to choose from yesterday, and even if he'd instructed them to keep the ball on the deck a display like this was always possible.

I'll look to apportion blame towards Kenny when he's had a chance to correct some of the obvious weaknesses that are currently handicapping him.

The same weaknesses that handicapped Roy? I realise Kenny was working with limited resources, particularly without Gaerrard and Suarez, but he is still the manager and has to accept some responsibility.

And I'm not talking about the hoofing, specifically. I don't think for a minute that Kenny would send them out there with the instructions to hoof it to Carroll for 90 minutes. The reason they did, however, was because the midfield was overrun. They were holding a high line, closing us down quickly, and outnumbering the player with the ball. This was obvious from very early on, yet we played into their hands for nearly the whole game. Admittedly, the players were shit, which didn't help, but they weren't helped by Kenny at all.

regardless of the quality of squad, there is no excuse for the amount of hoofing we saw last night. look at bolton for example, they practically changed their style of football overnight with the same players.

When you see what Kenny has managed to get out of this squad since he's taken over, i think it's clear that your Roy point becomes null and void mate.

We needed to score so i could see why Kenny went with this lineup, besides it's not like we had a decent CM sitting on the bench.

Bringing on NGog and Spearing should have happened after 60 mins, maybe even sooner.

Their 3 man midfield were constantly crowding us. When we went 4-3-3, the game changed.

Jesus, Neil, is "hoofing" the new "wingers" ?

We know.

We fucking know !

I don't feel as bad about last night as I thought I would. I really wanted us to win the Europa league too.

I'm not sure why I'm okay about it, maybe because I accept that we simply weren't good enough and didn't deserve it, although it's more likely due to the fact that I feel strongly that the team
we saw last night is a long way off of the team we will have at the start of next season. I don't see last night as indicative of where we are, instead as one of the final acts of this horriable period on the clubs history. I feel, with some conviction, that we have the right people in charge at the club right now, re-building takes time, as does embedding new players into a team. Last night was a disappointment, no doubt. But I think it would be wrong to define us by it.

I think it's a bonus that we have effectively had sixth months for a new manager to experiment a bit and get to know the game as it is now, get to know his team, players etc. I think it puts us in a stronger position come the start of next season.

The new team could start with Gerrard retiring from internationals. With his body breaking down more often and him taking longer to recover and find his form, I'm convinced the extended rest days would be great for his club career and the club. He gets shafted about anyway by the managers, and at the first chance, the captain's armband he's temporarily holding gets tossed back to the ogre that's Terry. And of course, we all know that England have sweet eff-all chance to win anything in the next 2 major tournaments anyway (and probably more).

With the team having so many holes, a fit and firing Gerrard could help to mask/cover some of the deficiencies until we get around to fix them. Time and money (I suppose) aren't on our side and Gerrard's presence will help ease the crunch.

Not that I think it's (his retirement) going to happen though. A pity, as he'll probably be wasted by 32. He already looks a pale shadow of his good old self in these 2 seasons.
