I Still Can't Believe

funnily enough i wasn't scared at all when the ball dropped to gudjohnsen - i never felt he'd score.

it was only after the countless replays i realised just what a chance it was.

I shat meself at the time but it hasn't gotten any better due to the fact I didn't actually realise at the time just how big a chance it was.

I wasn't looking at the tele and then when I looked up I was confused what all the fuss was about haha.

As soon as it got to penalties we had won. After a mentally exhausting period of extra time, I was cool as a cucumber once he blew for penalties.

Our entire run the EC victory was the wildest roller-coaster any fans will witness in the history of football. From a sheer drama point of view I can't see how it'll ever be bettered.

But like St George says, when it came to penalties I knew the cup was ours.

Did I still believe at HT? Fuck no. I almost missed our first goal because I was in my bedroom distraught but a little bit thankful I passed up a ticket...(Grr)

6 Fucking minutes injury time! 6 fucking minutes!! Where did they get that from! I am still disgusted about that and that 6 minutes felt as long as the previous 90.

When you get to your 40's and your heart is beating at 150 per minute and the ball falls to Gudjohnson you honestly feel that your heart will explode. When he missed and the full time whistle went it took me 2 or 3 minutes to actually start breathing normally.

I was sitting in my office one day last week and for no reason the image of Dudek saving Shevchenko's header and follow up came into my mind and I found myself grinning from ear-to-ear, this still happens quite regualarly and I'm sure it always will.

talking about the road to istanbul I remember the olymp game like it was yesterday. I was in the pub with my mate (a gooner) we were supposed to be watching a movie (alway a bit of confusion whether CL games are tuesday or wednesday) so anyway, olymp score and he is like, 'well we may as well go to the movies now' and I was like, 'no I want to watch this till the bitter end'. second half on come FSP like a man possessed and as each goal goes in I am going more and more crazy and when gerrard scores the winning goal the pub absolutely erupts (including my friend...odd). what a night, and to think I would have missed it if I'd fucked off to the cinema, I ended up watching the 'sinema' (TA BOOM TISH) anyway 🙂

LAME!

I was watching that game with three mates in one of theirs.
Half time was pretty quiet as you can imagine.
Then as the second half kicked off Charlie went for a piss and we scored.
Then a bit later, Gearoid nipped out for a piss and we scored again!
So it was down to me and my other mate, the other lads were shouting at us to go for a piss.
Just as I got back from my jacks run, Gerrard banged in the third goal.
In subsequent years if we ever needed a goal we would always joke about going for a piss.
It has never worked since, amazingly!

I was in the pub with two of my Utd supporting mates. One of them shook on a bet at half time that we wouldn't score three. I said we would. I had a Thursday night out with all my drink paid for.

Even more so than the save I'll never forget Dudeks little nod afterwards.

I remember that too.

Anyone remember when Traore made that save and then smacked the post coz he was pumped?

Destiny, it was.

Too true.

It was a night for unsung heroes, as well as the more celebrated ones.  Lord Frodsham, standing on the touchline waiting to get on with a glint in his eye that said "Let me at 'em", then putting his pen.away like a striking snake; Vlad Smicer, who knew he'd never play another game for us but went on and scored twice, and really meant it when he kissed the badge; his mate Baros, twisting and turning the centre of the A.C.Milan defence all through the second half, putting Stevie through for the run that led to the pen.and then holding Nesta up just enough to prevent him getting to the rebound first; Johnny Rockets putting in an absolute peach of a cross for Stevie's goal (why didn't he do that more often?); the list goes on.

One of the many things which were proven that night is that a good team unit can beat a collection of better individuals.  None of these guys will ever get near the All-Time Liverpool XI, but they did their bit when we needed them most.

great line from gray (after sheva misses point blank v dudek) - 'well, you might as well start craving liverpool's name on the trophy'

he had a point, that miss/save beggers belief

Coudn't agree more. Wouldn't it be amazing if people like Dossena, Lucas, Voronin, Babel stepped up at vital moments in a title winning season? Come on lads!

players like sinema, mellor, biscan, traore gave vitalcontributions at kep periods. for instance if not for sinema v olymp I am 100% we would have gone out, up until his introduction we had completely run out of ideas, and igor, what can you say about THAT mazy run and through bal for garcia. truly amazing.

From the same bloke who said after Crespo's second. "Game....well and truly......over. And I hate saying that"

He was saying what every neutral fan was thinking, probably most reds too, deep down.

The tone Aldo's was different from Gray's though imho. Plus as the comeback unfolded, Gray was finding all kinds of faults with Milan rather than actually praising us.

EG. After the second goal he started on the keeper for not getting to a shot, right in the corner for which he was unsighted and then continued that he was at fault for the first a header into the top corner!

He also stated that Milan were not "the unbeatables everyone said they were" as we were coming back at them but was salivating and lauding them as unstoppable when they went ahead.

He just swing from pillar to post - much like the game so perhaps that his is excuse. Perhaps I'm looking into it too much. Who knows...

I can't agree with that, after the first goal went in gray and tyler were almost willing liverpool to score (probably because itwould create more drama if the game was one sided as it was first half).
one classic line from gray when we got the penalty was - liverpool have a GLORIOUS chance to tie the game and I have not seen this, EVER! put it this way, there is the ITV coverage of the final and the SKY coverage of the final and I always watch the sky version.

The moment that did it for me was when the Kaiser stepped up to take the first pen. That's when I thoight to myself: "We're gonna be all right here. We've got Jairmens." 8)
[/quote]

Good call, I was racking my brain at the time trying to think who would hit the penalties and had completely forgot about Didi. I had assumed that Gerrard was going to take the first as it sets the tone for the rest of the shoot out and his record from the spot was patchy. Once Didi walked towards the spot I breathed a sigh of relief as I suddenly remembered he was German.

I wouldn't blame a supposedly neutral commentary team for any of those things in that game. We got absolutely raped for most of the game and if you were a Milan fan, you'd feel that Milan lost it, rather than Liverpool won it. I know I felt the same in 2007 and that wasn't even comparable.

Anyways, if nothing else, Gray added some memorable quotes to the whole experience. Looking back and reflecting on quotes like "game well and truly over and I don't like saying that" is great.

Please discontinue writing things like this.

It transports me back to that night and I become all misty-eyed and a great lump appears in my throat and I'm unable to talk.

Not many things in life can create such emotions.

Fuckin' football eh?
