Gudjohnsen missed that chance in 2005. I just watched it there and I was nervous and extremely relieved at the same time. What a night.

It must really ruin Terry, Lampard et al that he's since gone on to win two CL winners' medals.

Surpassed only by Istanbul itself and the Alaves game IMO.

Time stood still when the ball dropped to him. It was one of those horrible moments in football where you just feel sheer terror. However, the great thing about moments like that is the ecstasy you feel immediately afterwards.

Also see the moment Dida saves Xabi's penalty in Instanbul and when the ref gave the penalty against Roma in the UEFA cup only to change his ming

And the double save of Shevchenko...

Got goosebumps just typing about it.

it was fate that run of ours.

how houllier's players rose to the occasion for one last masterful performance - dudek, didi, vlad err kewell....

bar the introduction of torres and reina in later years it was our best team under rafa.

Yeah, that's what the Roma fans were all saying after the game. 😉

The single most terrifying moment of my sports life.

Time stopped as the ball dropped to him - It was like a Matrix-esque scene from a bad movie... I seemed to come out of my own body and hover around the table I was watching it from. I can still remember the expression on the faces of those with me... The Arsenal friend who was on our side that day. The few waitresses who's shifts had ended, but wanted to sit with us 'cos we were "crazy soccer fans and awesome fun".

It was one of those slow-motion "Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!" moments.

He couldn't miss. We were out. My knees actually buckled and I hit the floor, dispondent. Misery flooded my body. There were tears already in my eyes.

I didn't actually see him miss it, until the replay, 'cos the table and the legs of my friends blocked my view from that angle - I wondered why Dave was cheering a chelsea winner.

"AAAhhhhhhaaaahhhhahaaahhhaaaa! He missed! He fackin' missed!"

Replay after replay confirmed what Dave was yelling, but I couldn't fathom that it hadn't gone in. With each new replay, I expected to see it fly in. But it never did.

He put it in the only place possible to result in his not scoring... An inch to the right, and he scores directly. An inch to the left and it flies in off Drogba. I'd put the chances of his putting it wide from there without it deflecting off somebody on the way at about 1%. And he f#$!in' did it. If he got that chance 99 more times, it would go into the net about 95 of them.

The wave of pure joy that surged through my body has only been equalled by daughter related stuff since. I get goosebumps just typing about it... I don't think I felt anymore joy in Istanbul than I did the night we beat them wankers. The same joy, sure, but not more... And I didn't scream or yell or jump around or celebrate at all - I still couldn't wrap my head around him not scoring. It was impossible to miss from there...

And justice was done. Wasn't Gudjohnson the prick who dived so Xabi would miss the 2nd leg? Karma's a bitch, huh?

To this day, when we're warming up before matches, right at the end, I'll run up to the goal, stand about 5 feet out, scream "Gudjohnson - He MUST score!" and blaze it wide, normally for a throw in. It's like a pre-match ritual.

And even though I know what happens, I still break out in a brief cold sweat when I watch that particular incident again... I still expect that ball to finish up in the net.

One of the worst and most glorious misses of all time.

Very good Whaddapie - sums it up nicely (except Instanbul was another two levels up for me) !

I just remember taking a deep breath and I could feel the blood leave my face.
I FUCKING LEPT out of my out of my seat when it flew wide and cheered it like a winning goal.
Am amazing moment, an amazing night.

So it was out best team under Rafa, except it wasn't?

I still can't believe it happened, the Mellor/pongo goals before Gerrards amazing wonder goal v olympiacos

The Biscan run v deportivo

Cara with the cramp

The Juve game, Carson save v Juve and the mess up later on in the game,
I seem to remember Le Tallec playing one of his last games v Juve, after his performance there it looked like he might stay on. and alonso returned after his broken foot.

dudek at fault for the 3rd leverkusen goal and we had a nagging doubt in out head for a week until lil luis and baros settled it within half an hour.

Dudek, Traore, Nunez, Biscan, Smicer, Cisse etc

how do you define best? that team won the champions league final whilst all our successive teams have come up short. the introduction of garcia and alonso to a very solid liverpool team added just the right amount of flair.

i still think that team bar reina, torres and now johnson was as good a first 11 as the one we have today.

Look, I'm sobering up now, but it doesn't take the sharpest mindstate to see you are consistently such a fucking irritating one-noted cunt.

Why MUST you get a dig in, ALL the time about one boring agenda. I know what your public opinion is going to be on virtually everything football related, so what is the point of you continuing to post?

You are utterly useless. This thread has absolutely nothing to do with the discussion you've attempted to draw out with your stupid snide remarks. This is a thread expressing joy about a fantastic moment in football history, and the greatest triumph Liverpool has had in many a year. It was Rafa's squad, and the reason why is because if he had lost it would have been his squad according to you, you utter fucking downer.

Rage, much of your views have merit ; but your single-mindedness just comes across as being vindictive.

If you're going to slate Rafa for his mistakes, then praise him for his successes.

i did praise him. the introduction of alonso and garcia made all the difference to an otherwise very solid team that imo had one of the best defences in europe. that alongside rafa's clear skill in being able to set up a team to beat practically any opposition in a knock out tournament.

there is no other manager i would have in charge of us if all he was responsible for was setting up a team for a champions league game.

my point really is in hindsight that rafa is pretty poor in the transfer market and that houllier's players were not as bad as some think.

i also believe in fate and destiny and see istanbul that way - it was meant to be.

You crow barred that point into a thread where it didn't belong, and it's a point you've made clear a billion times, in not particularly illuminating ways. This thread was supposed to be sweetness and light.

This thread had nothing to do with you or your admiration for or loathing of Rafa. Your position on Rafa, which is well known, and exhausting in its simplicity, is not relevant to everything.

Transport yourself to the moment, a fantastic one, heart in throat, and if you think of Rafa's relative responsibility for the team in that moment of thought, you are irredeemable.

Oh for fucks sake. It was fucking shite. It had Traore, Baros, Smicer, etc.

What fucking planet are you from? That side's league showing that season was the worst under Benitez, because it wasn't his side, you fucking pleb.

I think if we'd lost the CL in 2005 and then won the CL 2007 it would have been a truer representation of the sides strength in depth.
