what makes this worse is Villa are average and offered nothing only SET PIECES but then we lacked a spark to get back into it and make them cave.

maybe because the team isnt fit etc. I dont know but it was lacking.

Thinking about it, we've conceded all our goals thus far through set pieces.

I'd leave it the way it is,the trick is not to panic.
it's like fantasy football things go tits up for people because they are too trigger happy, we HAVE a system and it was a system that almost won us the league. a (major) part of the system is gone but we've improved on another part. we have to ride this storm out and not panic. Anyway I know rafa wont change the system so it's a moot point.

Maybe one positive to come out of this - maybe the Yanks will realise they MUST give Rafa the money for Silva or it's goodnight Louise. In fact I think this may indeed be Rafa's cunning plan.

It'd be easier not to panic if we didn't have to further alter the system if we wanted to buy those improvements we originally needed.

Hi, the alternator in the car is broken, can I sell you this starter to replace it?

It's old lady that swallowed the fly syndrome, and its because we are still servicing purchase debt.

Lets all take a step back.

It wasn't that bad. If we played against Chelsea or any decent side tonight, we could've been on the end of a royal spanking, as it is.

It was a nothing match, we bossed the first half, creating very little and were very unfortunate to go in 2 down, let alone 1 down.
A nothing match because it was against Villa and not Chelsea? Do we get extra points for beating Chelsea? Fucking ridiculous post.

Agreed

I do think Yossi could learn the LW spot, but posters are right, it's costing us in terms of width.

And Lucas just isn't good enough to make up for Mascherano's...specialist nature.
Don't agree Squiggs. We saw plenty of width in the 2nd half. Insua went to the byline more than a couple of times and he did so much better than in the first half. Same with Johnson - second half he was hardly 10 yds from their penalty box in 45 mins.

Difference was pace. In the 2nd we upped the tempo and it created space.

I don't know, there could be games where Yossi could do a job on the left, he'd generally support Insua well and bring him into the game, but I think his obvious penchant to cut inside will leave Insua with more to do than he is capable off at the minute from left-back over a season.

I'd happily switch to 442 until Aquilani is fit. Drop Gerrard back into CM and let him pull some strings. We have nothing in midfield with Lucas and Mash. Play Yossi/Riera/New LM on the left and Kuyt on the right with Babel up front.

I know what you're saying, and its not one of those panic fix it all formations. Usually I defend Lucas in him having the natural footballing talent to do a job, but I really do worry about his lack of confidence in putting himself in pressure positions on the pitch, his lack of mobility/strength, and importantly how it seems to be manifesting itself in the players in front of him with Gerrard constantly dropping back, with Torres hence remaining woefully isolated. Mascherano also then seems to be having to take a lead role in initiating our attacks each and every time, I know its been touched upon, but Alonso's presence was key in the formation due to his ability to initiate play from deep effectively, something that very few players in world football can do, let alone Lucas, its not invalid at all to suggest we should update our system to cater for his loss.

If Riera is still a red by Saturday, he and Kuyt's combined tracking back should make us relatively decent defensively, along with keeping a natural width that'll bring others into play. We really do have enough talent and options on that first team I put up to beat a lot of sides convincingly.

Lets all take a step back.

It wasn't that bad. Wrong If we played against Chelsea or any decent side tonight, we could've been on the end of a royal spanking, as it is.Correct

It was a nothing match Wrong, we bossed the first half Wrong, creating very little Correct and were very unfortunate to go in 2 down Wrong, let alone 1 down.

Second half was slack too Correct, it's hard to pin the blame at any one door as there's so many places it should go but at the same time; fair play Villa Correct, they pinned back Glen and Insua very well. Thus giving us zero width.

One count of blood rush to the head and one Own goal seperate the two sides.Correct

We're still without Aurelio - I'm less convinced with Insua with the more frequently he starts.

Still without Aquilani - Lucas is average at best Correct

Riera - not fully fit - Was a very useful player last season regardless of doubts about him long term Correct

then there's Dogger, we'll have a better squad when he's back,obviously Correct

Roll on Bolton and prepare for a Stoke like backlash, Megson 😉

I'm all for trying to be positive, but little consolation can be gained from tonight or indeed the Spurs performance.

We lost 2 games in 38 last year.

We've now equalled that in three. There's more than enough reasons to be very concerned.
Thread should have ended here.

Up front poor, midfield shocking, defensively suspect from set pieces.

All of those things could be rightly said about us at the moment.

6 points of the pace already. No fucking money to change personell.

not happy at all.

All this talk about money.

To change a bunch of shit players whom Rafa bought in the first place.

It's depressing.

Let's just give up the title and any hope for cups now and enjoy whatever win we may have this season.

*storms off in a strop*
