It won't happen but Yesil starting would be the only thing exciting me about this match.

Why not, 4th is gone may as well see if some of the young talent can make a splash.

It's a long shot but, no, 4th has not yet gone. United have a tougher run-in and will likely drop the points required for us to catch them ... whether we can suddenly regain form and win 5 on the bounce is a whole other question though.

A few weeks ago I said it's possible that United could lose 4-5 matches over the last 10. 2 down 2 to go.

Yesil starting better not be some bullshit political statement by Brendan.
Probably..

Something very Rafa about it...

That being said... It's a good time to blood the youngsters... We might have something to smile about come the end of the Season....

Though we could potentially be 1pt behind utd by the next time they play..

Yesil would be a sensible move. Sterling is off form, Balotelli and Lambert can't play as a lone striker and Borini can't score goals.

Why does it make more sense? Which of our other options would be a better one at the moment?

More in terms of he being ready. Hasnt he only played a few games for the U-21s since coming back from his injury?
Our only option besides Studge is Sterling. Borini, Balotelli and Lambert give us nothing.

Fair comment.

On reflection I wonder whether this is one game in which Lambert might not be out of place. They'll pose a mainly physical challenge, so he could go up top and have that battle with their CBs to create openings for our midfield runners.

Gutted for Lambert if he still can't even get a start ahead of Yesil... I think we've needed to give him more starts this season.

I'd drop Sterling.

I know he's a prick, but I'd be tempted to start with Ballotelli & lambert upfront, with Coutinho in behind.

Henderson & Gerrard in the centre.

Moreno & Ibe out wide.

Can, Skrtel & Lovren at the back

Lambert only makes sense if there's another forward playing alongside him. He was most effective for Southampton when alongside Jay Rodriguez and/or whoever that Argentinian lunatic they signed was. Lambert is really good at pulling defenders out of position but others need to exploit that space.

I would like to see us play with 2 up top for the rest of the season. Coutinho playing behind. I would like to see a back 4 because 3 at the back isn't going to be a long term solution.

It does make you wonder why Lambert was signed in the first place.. as Lambert was a Rodgers signing..

I still maintain that he has had a very positive influence in the majority of his 15+ min appearances. As stated above, he isn't a solo striker and so his chances have been limited but I think we missed a trick in not giving it a go.

Playing along side sterling I think would of worked better than playing alongside balotelli..

Balotelli and Lambert are similar type players..

No they aren't. Lambert plays right up the front while Balotelli does his best work (don't all laugh at once) playing off the front man. In theory it's a combo which ought to have worked, had Balotelli given a sh!t earlier on in the season and Lambert been given a fairer shake.

As long as we don't get to see Sterling as a striker, and Markovic as a wing back, I'm not fussed what he's upto tonight dicking around with the formation.

I'd go:

...................Migs
........Lovren...Skrtel
Ibe............Can..........Moreno
.......Hendo....Coutinho
Lazar.......Lambert.........Sterling

Or if one of them had an ounce of decent pace and movement. I really like Lambert btw, but only in terms of position could you argue it might have worked, and even then, Lambert has played as a midfielder in the past and, aside from his good aerial strength, he found alot of joy at Southampton in dropping between the lines and feeding players. Neither him nor Mario are particularly strong leading the line, without the correct type of players surrounding them. Mario is permanently offside because he's too lazy to get back, while Lambert lacks the pace to get beyond. He's good when we're attacking from around the box and we can whip balls across, either on the deck or in the air, but when we go more direct from deep, it's a fruitless tactic because he just doesn't have the pace to lead a quality attack.

How often do we go more direct from deep though? From back to front, the players seem to have been given firm instructions not to do that. With Rodgers' preferred style and the midfielders we've got, I'd see Lambert playing just as he did at Southampton and doing at least as well.

-----------------Mignolet-------------------
Can------Skrtel----Lovren----Johnson
-------------------Allen---------------------
--------Henderson---Coutinho----------
--Ibe-----------Lambert---------Sterling

I think we have to accept, Gerrard will start every game till the end of the season.

I wonder. Brendan's own position isn't fully secure at the minute and I can't see him putting Stevie's interests ahead of his own. Nor should he.

I don't know, when we play him it's like the team go into Crouch/Carroll mindset and think they have to hoof it to him, even though the guy himself is telling people to keep it on the deck.
