How long has Fergie got?

Just looked at the BBC interview with Fergie post lat night's match and I was struck with how shell shocked he looked.

I have always thought that he would retire once he surpassed our league titles, finally knocking us of our perch and having Man U move ahead of us in Premier league titles for the first time in their history.

I guess he would have thought that this years Champions league, and surely he must have felt confident of reaching another final, was an opportunity to get within one of our European record as well.

So what do you think will happen to Fergie. Will he retire at the end of the season if they win the premiership or if they don't will he keep going until he either achieves his goal or drops dead dead trying?

My bet is that his goal was to overtake us both in Europe and in the league. He may quite well do it in the league now >🙁, but I've never thought he'd manage it in Europe and he's now going to have to face up to that. My heart pumps purple piss for the old goat.

Oh, for sure, mate. The question is how long he will want it, with a team in transition which will always be dangerous but may or may not have much prospect of challenging for the Champs League.

I think he'll always want it JJ, stubborn fucker that he is.
He really wants to get to nineteen titles before us but I think even he would admit it is unlikely he will surpass five european cups.

5 Years without a trophy for Wenger this year if they don't win the league.

How long does 'beautiful football alone' get you these days?

Barcelona is the exception where they play beautiful football and win stuff?

If not for him they would have about 100 million more debt.

Tell me which other manager spends as little as him, and keeps the team comfortably in the top four. Wenger was challenging for the league title twice in those five years, and been to the champions league final twice.

Is this an attempt to show Rafa is getting unfair stick compared to Wenger? If so, it is pathetic.

I think we are absolutely in no position to knock down his stature as a manager.

Well, them and Spain.

Spain & Europe and they beat MU too in the finals.

Barca is exceptional in that they have a fantastic team of players playing the game their way that is so pleasant to watch.

As long as he wants, I would think...

I think so too, but a more pertinent question is how does this United team have left ?

Some of the players are showing their age, others are struggling a lot with injury. They don't have the cash they once had to replace them all so it'll be interesting to see whether Fergie walks before it is time to rebuild. If he does the new man has a hell of a job on his hands.

Hmmm... they have quite a few under 25s:

Rooney, Nani, Fabio, Rafael, Macheda, Gibson, Valencia (still under 25?), Anderson, Welbeck, Obertan, Johnny Evans...

Yep, you might be right Ros...

Leaving out Rooney and Valencia who are already established Premiership players. Evans is another with constant injury problems and I'd be surprised if half of the other names make it at United.

Ferdinand is perma crocked, Vidic is a model to leave. Neville, Scholes, Giggs all close to the end of their careers. That's a lot of depth to lose.

I´d luv it if manu doesn´t win shit this year and the fucker retires, just luuuv it.

I can't see him leaving just yet, particularly if they fail to win the league this year. It'd be a bit of a limp ending to it all, wouldn't it?

It'll be interesting to see what they do in the summer with regards to transfers though. Rumours of trying for Benzema again are doing the rounds.

It will be interesting to see what money they have available. Last year they got £80mill for Ronaldo, spent £15Mill on Valentia. The rest went to pay the interest on their debt.

Neville Giggs Scoles are finished, as good as, and have to be replaced. Van der Saar is 38 or something and the interest on their £750mill debt will have to be paid again this year.

If they win the league I could see him retiring. If they dont I suspect he would need assurances on spending power to continue.

I doubt he'll publically announce it long in advance this time and I'm sure he is looking to go out with a bang, which is understandable.

Problem is if United do start looking weaker, which they are not as such yet but clearly rely a lot on one player, which is unusual for them, and if City, who they've always sneered at, actually look like overtaking them then all in all its not a nice way to go.

Maybe fergie will think its best to get out early before things start to slide.

I wonder what will happen after though. Will he still be involved there? How could a new manager deal with him sticking his nose in all the time?

Sorry, perhaps the thread title was slightly misleading.
Fergie, in lieu of past achievements, can probably stay Man U boss for life if he so chooses.

I am more curious as to what people think of the timing he chooses for his departure.

I for one believe, that if Man U get to nineteen then he could very well retire at that point, considering his work done.

However if nineteen isn't forthcoming I wonder how long he will continue on for.

I think Rosco could well be right when he alluded to the financial landscape changing and therefore Utd's ability to rebuild by major investment being severely limited.

If this does turn out to be the case I wonder if Fergie is so obsessed, that he will carry on in the vain hope that he would somehow surpass our record or will he see the writing on the wall and retire, status intact, pretty much still at the top.

If precedent is anything to go by, not well at all. Their 26 years without a trophy were due at least partly to failing to move on from the Busby era. He hung around on the board, and successive managers after him just couldn't get off the ground properly. Tommy Docherty was the only one between Busby and Ferguson who looked as though he might make something of the job, but then he got involved with the wife of the club physio and had to leave. The same again would do very nicely.

Makes you wonder what would have happened if the powers that be hadn't "had a word" with Bill when he kept turning up at training etc once Bob was in charge.

Yeah that did occur to me too. It was an unfortunate episode in our history but sadly one that was possibly necessary.

With United though they must be considering it. I mean if someone like Mourinho did go there he's hardly likely to accept Ferguson hanging about is he?

Replacing Slur Alex is the biggest poisoned chalice in world football

Which is why Jose won't
[/quote]

jose would take the job, his ego is bigger than fergie's so he wouldn't be scared of what fergie has achieved in the past.
