I'm pretty certain it was against a 'small' team that we should have bettered... They may not be in the Premier Division anymore...

Oldham. Or Millwall. Or Norwich. Or Oxford.

Some shite like that...

Norwich is correct.

I was going to say "Rumplestiltskin" if it went on much longer.

I'm surprise no one just googled it!

My Google must be playing tricks, because that's what it came up with for me.

I was like him as a young lad. No real skillbut had a burst of pace and but put me in front of goal one on one then I scored. If the ball rebounded in the box, I was there, goal.

I was never taught it, I can't tell people how I did it, it just happened. Where did it all go wrong for me? *sighs*

Perhaps my nose wasn't big enough?

You've managed to carve out a nice career as a tv critic and tv presenter, though, and have a lovely wife in Konnie Huq.

Don't be so hard on yourself.

I was slightly taken back Oncy regarding the wasn't much loved statement. During his hey day was when my generation went to more games away than missed,
and he was certainly reveered in our circles. Never known anyone to defend from the front like he did. Centre halves never got a seconds grace on the ball, and
I can recall one mid-week match aganist Ipswich at Anfield where he slaughtered Terry Butcher ( the then England Centre half ) so much so, that the Kop was singing
'give it to Butcher' in the hope Rushie would get his hattrick.

Charlie Brooker? You cunt!

The enduring image of Rushie for me is twatting it in the far corner for our third in the '86 cup final and knocking the camera over.

The best goal poacher I've ever known, tapins by the bucket load, loved by all red fans, gutted when he left for juventus.. An absolute legend he is, shame he wasn't English .

Some of Ian Rush's Goals

That's a fantastic clip, mate.

What's more it should be compulsory viewing for all those who have a belief that Ian Rush was simply a goal poacher.

What a finisher ........but i have never forgiven him for not scoring against Norwich in 94 . It was the Kop's "last Stand' , my first game , and he promised a goal . Damn Jeremy Goss got it instead.

We have been lucky with strikers/attackers though haven't we . Sir Roger , Keegan , Toshack , Kenny , Fowler , Torres before he became "El Cunto" and now Suarez . Sure i've missed some also .....Dundee and Diouf maybe ?

Don't forget Owen.

He's certainly the closest we've had to Rush in the last 25 years.

It should be compulsory viewing for our current strikers! They might learn a thing or two!

In his first spell he was primarily a poacher (that Villa hat trick was one of the notable exceptions) but if you look at some of his more spectacular goals they came in his second period after he had returned from Juve. I would maintain his short spell in Juve improved his technical ability including his volleying and general ball striking. All imho of course.

Interesting observation. I also felt at the time that Rushie wasn't the same player after he came back, but not in a good way - I thought he'd lost a bit of zip and some of that sheer killer instinct, and was trying to think too much instead of just letting the force be with him. He was still a good player of course, and still scored some fine goals, but I remember thinking when Aldo was forced out of the club at the time that we were letting the better option leave. Rushie at his best was a better player than Aldo, but I didn't think he was at his best any more by then.

I'd be willing to stand corrected from Spion since I dare say he watched at least half Rushies carreer from closer proximity. However, I also thought Rush had lost a bit when he returned from Juve. He was a little older of course so some of the zip had understandably left him but he wasn't quite the natural goal scorer who left us. I actually think he scored plenty of spectacular goals in his first spell but his goal poaching ability tended to swamp them. That instinct seemed to be depleted - to my distant eyes by that stage - when he returned so the proportion of spectacular goals obviously increased.

Agree with Jules that Aldo looked the more likely scorer at the time but I could never have said no to Rush returning so it was a price I was willing to pay.

Rush was lethal in and out of the box, that was the difference between him and Lineker. I don't recall any LFC fans having anything other than adoration for him but it's fair to say that, when the style of the team changed to accommodate the likes of Barnes, Beardsley and Aldo, and Rushie returned from Juventus, his 'fit' in the team wasn't quite the same, depsite him still being prolific for a couple more seasons. I think a lot of people felt sorry for Aldo that he felt he had to move on.
With the squads these days, imagine having those two at your disposal.

Seems odd now that it was a case of either Rush or Aldridge. These days I'd imagine they'd both be kept on.

I only really have clear recollection of his second spell. For earlier times I'd relying on videos and some more hazy memories. However he still got goals right up until the end really. He never embarrassed himself at Liverpool, though it helped that Fowler came through when he did.

it was a shame seeing him struggle after he left us though.

That last goal in cerebus's clip there against Blackburn.... fuck me thats a strike!

I Love Ian Rush he is a pure legend.

I don't think Rushie's return was the reason for Aldo leaving. It was more of a convenient cover-up for that. Aldo was pushed out the door because he got into a public spat with Paisley, who had criticised the decision to sign him in what he (Paisley) thought was an off-the-record chat with a hack who then went public.

I don't think it was that at all JJ. It was most definitely Rush returning and a "very hurt" John Aldridge as a fall out. Kenny really upset him getting rid and understandably so.

Not buying, mate. It was Kenny who had signed Aldo in the first place, it was Paisley who didn't think he should have, and you didn't cross Paisley with impunity, as Aldo found out to his huge disappointment.

I knew about the row with Paisley but thought that was a bit earlier and it all got sorted. What was Paisley's problem with Aldridge anyway?
