How can we fix this in the short-term?

Back to basics.

I don't really care about flowing football right now, I just want points on the board. Go 4-4-2, when the opposition has the ball go with the two banks off 4 defending and hit teams on the break.

We're not going to play on the counter against Wolves. They'll just sit there and wait for it to end in a 0-0 draw. Besides which, we're not very solid defensively nor do we have much pace in our team - counterattacking football is not going to help us right now.

[/quote]

Right you are, something needs to change. And getting the basics of defence right would be a good place to start.

If everyone was fit, until Mascher returns:

Reina

Kelly/Carra Skrtel/Carra Agger Aurelio
Johnson Aquilani Gerrard Riera
Yossi
Torres

WAIT! You want to take the great Dirk Kuyt out of the right wing slot? But he creates so much! And he works so hard! Woah, you must either no shit about football, be just stupidly anti-Dirk or be a Yossi lover.

By beating Wolves and Villa, it'll look different again then. Field your best 11 fit players, be attack minded from the start and forget targets of any kind, and forget picking a team to try and nullify the opposition.

Also, as Masch is suspended Rafa will be forced into playing Aquilani which may provide the attacking impetus we need.

The amount of times you talk about Kuyt, but somehow always bring Casper into the equation, is rather embarrassing

I will tell you.
Play 442 with Torres and N'gog, until we get someone in January, and play Gerrard and Aqualani in the centre. (Mascher is going to be missing for at least four games). Benayoun on the right, Aurelio on the left until Riera is fit, and bring in Pacheco and Eccleston for the bench, along with Dirk

Can't agree with that Vladders. Torres and Ngog is not a partnership and wouldn't work well at all IMO. Torres has to play with Yossi or Kuyt. Ngog when Torres is injured.

ha ha ... thanks for proving my point ... normally when i talk about kuyt, either you or ryan or aquaman or some other football genius points out how he's better than yossi ...

but it's terribly embarrassing - you're right, i mean, damn. thanks brendan!

Well, I thought about that and seeing as N'gog and fucking Dirk worked on Wednesday, I decided to play Nando instead of Dirk

Come on man, it's like every time an opportunity presents itself you have one of these posts ready.

The other guys have been unfair on Yossi (and your posts) in the past but these sort of posts just give you that crazed Kuyt hater vibe and you're not wearing it well.

Win games, simple as that. Benitez's ethos is all about fitness, so I fully expect our usual second half of the season spurt when the squad is at their peak. It's just a case of grinding wins out at the moment and hope the likes of Villa, Spurs or City don't find some consistency.

I know ... I just kinda had enough of the shit fed by the usual crew. I like Kuyt, I want him on Liverpool. But I want a better RW. He can be Torres' partner up front until we find a better option (or should I say 'if').

You're right, sorry ...

Maybe this is a bit mad, maybe it needs it own thread but.....

What do we make of relieving Gerrard of his role as captain while he's not in great form so he can work on that side of his game.

Take a bit of pressure off him or ruin his confidence?

I don't think Rafa has the interpersonal skills to explain to Gerrard why it might benefit him and the team though.

It is, just putting it out there to see if anybody could see any benefits.

Nope.

We need to go back to the aggressive 4231 we were playing earlier and away from this benign 4411 which is supposed to be more secure but isn't.

Johnson---Skrtel---Agger---Aurelio

Johnson in midfield makes sense but he'll be better playing off an inside forward like he was early in the season; someone to take a player or two away with him and become an extra body in the box. If Johnson is going to be worth his 18m he needs to spend more time in the final 3rd than defensive 3rd and that's not going to happen with Carragher. Skrtel needs to be given a chance to play into form. The less adventurous Aurelio will help with numbers back vs. Insua.

Gerrard---Mascherano/Lucas--Aquilani--Riera/Yossi

Gerrard has been poor in just about everything except his play in the wide areas and his crossing. He is not linking up well centrally so this is his best option right now. He needs to play this role properly though, none of this free role bullshit. He plays it like Kuyt (with the addition of a first touch).

If Mascherano plays, it's on the understanding that he is a DM, he's been swanning around all over the place like he's some kind of playmaker. No more. DM, that's it. Protect the back 4.

------N'Gog----
---Torres-----

N'Gog plays like that a lot for the french youth teams and has done well.

It's all a bit of a risk and is as likely to blow up as succeed but it's got to be better than doing nothing.

Is the correct answer. The reason Gerrard's getting snuffed out so easily in the centre is that the wide players are absolutely gash.

FFS we're playing an incompotent LB as a LW.

THe bank of 3 behind Torres must be geared towards attacking and the 2 CM's can focus on protecting the back 4.

Even just gearing towards ball retention would be enough of a platform for a massive improvement IMO.
