Houllier said: "At Liverpool, the chairman told me one day I had put the club into the 21st Century in terms of facilities, culture and training.

"We also finished fourth, third, second, fifth and fourth. My regret was not to win the league. That was too far for us. When Liverpool won the European Cup in Istanbul, I went into the changing room.

"It was an emotional moment but I sat shyly in the corner.

"Then all the players came to me to hug me and say 'This is your team. This is your team.'

"It was all my players apart from two.

He left Liverpool with a shit squad and a shit player on the way (Cissé).
The two players that wasn't Houllier's were Luis Garcia and Xabi Alonso, together with Gerrard the biggest reason we won.

Houllier is being a dick.

I like GH but he's not doing himself any favours if he really said this stuff about Istanbul - even if it's true, and I suspect there's some exaggeration involved ("all" the players?).

This has been done before.

In new Houllier news, apparently he wants to bring Michael OWen to Villa

Yer da.
It was shit.

Everyone knows the majority of the squad was left behind by Houllier but they wouldn't have won it without contributions from the likes of Alonso and Garcia, and we know who we have to thank for those players.

Thanks Pako !

Hah!

Btw, it's worth pointing out that although we may rubbish the Houlluer squad (outside the first 11), players like Mellor, Pongolle, Le Tallec and Biscan all came in and did what was asked of them during that European campaign.

Except those players were TERRIBLE under Houllier. Benitez came in and gave them a new lease of life. Houllier used to play Biscan at centre-half, remember?

Only when we had injuries, everyone knew he wasn't a centre half.

Yes, but you can't deny that Benitez gave them a fresh start. Biscan rarely got games in midfield under Houllier and Le Tallec, Sinama and Mellor hardly got any opportunities in the first team.

gh played igor at center back because he wanted to introduce mobility and the ability to bring the ball out of defense, right idea, wrong player.

They were Ged's players that won the CL apart from Xabi and Luis but it certainly wasn't his team. The team and the way they went about winning that trophy was all Rafa's.

Pretty disrespectful tripe from the crazy old man..

Rafa's tactics in the knockout rounds were AMAZING... Rafa had some right shite left over from Ged and we had significant luck in the final.

To take any credit for that win is disgraceful. Its something he may joke about to his mates in lighthearted conversation but this is just pathetic.

Yes, this has been done to death.

LOL at the idea of Heskey and Owen up front for Villa.

He's not that, he's just deluded. That all started before he left us.

He really seems to have not moved on and he seems to be determined to take credit for others work. Now, he's taking credit for Michael Owen's talent...

"And if you say your other mission is to make progress with the players, I did that too. Michael Owen won the Ballon D'Or when I was Liverpool manager."

houllier said this a long time ago from what i remember. in any case i doubt houllier had it in him to bring in the likes of alonso and garcia that made a huge difference in our offensive play. its no surprise to me that once we lost these two rafa's team started to look like houllier's team in their inability to also break teams down.

i wish him well at villa. i'm particularly interested to see what he's learned since managing us.

whether he deserves none of the credit, some of the credit or all of the credit i will always be thankful of how he desmantled the spice boy culture, bringing us the likes of didi and hyppia and the 3 cups in that season. like rafa he had a disasterous summer transfer window and in the end failed.

Just show everyone your Champions League winners medal Ged. That'll shut your doubters up.

This

there's something terribly insecure about taking credit for istanbul and now michael owen's talents (of old)
