Houllier acting like Houllier

Aston Villa manager Gerard Houllier has questioned the commitment of out of favour full-backs Stephen Warnock and Habib Beye.

The duo have been relegated to training with the reserves.

When asked if Warnock and Beye were part of his plans, Houllier told the Birmingham Mail: "They must show the trust first and they must show they like the club."

He added: "They're here, they're Aston Villa players, they are training with the reserves. If needed, they will fill in. If not, they won't.

"It's not only a matter of being good enough, it's also a matter of being committed enough.

"They're training with the reserves and they have to give their best because the reserves work hard.

"There's no point just being in our warm-downs, so they train with the reserves."

Warnock was part of England's World Cup squad last summer but is now third choice left-back behind Ciaran Clark and Nathan Baker.

He had been linked with a loan move to his former club Liverpool last month but it failed to materialise.

Beye has not been part of Houllier's plans for nearly three months.

What's with Houllier? Always treating out of favour players like dirt.
I remember him doing that at Liverpool as well.
When Westerveld was was injured he didn't let our backup keeper take over, did he?

Can understand the part regarding Beye but didn't Warnock play well under MON's reign?

He did. But it wouldn't surprise me if Warnock harbours some animosity against Houllier considering he barely got to play.

Checked some stats. He didn't play a single game during Houllier's tenure at Liverpool.
Was sent out on loan twice. In his place as backup left backs we had the great Gregory Vignal and Djimi Traoré.

Hmmm...I'd think its the other way round actually - more of Houllier's prejudice. Just seemed too silly for Warnock to risk his career simply cos of that.

I reckon he would've flocked off Friedel if he had the extra $ or replacement available.

Wouldn't surprise me. I think Dalglish wanted to save Warnock.

Was that when Dudek and Kirkland were injured and instead of giving Luzi a go (after a good substitute appearance) he went out and got Paul Jones on loan?

Of course he treatment of Westerveld before that was pretty harsh too. Transfer window deadline and we bought two goalkeepers to replace him.

I like Houllier but there were times when his treatment of players was questionable. Normally when things were not going well in general

Exactly!! I remember feeling sorry for Luzi.

Not sure I felt sorry for Luzi as such but I did wonder what the point of having him was if even as a absolute emergency for the short term (it was only one or 2 games) he was not considered to be trustworthy enough.

gh worst decision is by far nico. I remember the news that gh was passing on nico like it was yesterday and feeling sick to my stomach. and then to compound it he said 'trust us'. then came the world cup and the rest is history.
