Gilberto is decent but he's well past his best. And he wouldn't have Melo alongside him doing all the running here either.

How far is Shelvey away from Premiership level ?

If he's capable of stepping up in the next 18 months then a stop gap might be a decent idea rather than splashing out on someone who will simply block his path to the first team.

We need a lot better than Gilberto.

My god, our once fantastic midfields getting worse and worse and worse.

Alonso and Mascherano gone in successive summers, while Gerrards form disintegrates. Gilberto?

If we don't fix the balance in the midfield, regardless of who we buy to supplement Torres, he'll be starved of service, just as he was this season quite often when he played. If we have even a slim chance of hanging onto Mascherano, we should sharpen our fingernails and dig in. I'm sick to death of selling known goods for unknown ones, especially when the banks will tend to take a chunk of each and every transaction.

He's more of a Gerrard type player though, with good running and an eye for a pass, he doesn't really look in the defensive midfielder mould.

Fair enough, but I was thinking more in the shortterm, we'll need a DM, and as long as the rest of the midfield is good enough, signing Gilberto or another DM shouldn't have an impact on the service Torres gets. I always felt the main issue with this concern was playing two DM's and no natural widemen.

They're completely different sorts of player though. Shelvey is much more dynamic - in the Gerrard mould. If Masher's going and we accept that we need a specialist defensive midfielder to replace him, we may as well buy one who has a bit of longevity. And we should get enough money for Masher to do just that.

I guess it depends what we do at CB. We require pace to protect our CBs at times, and that will only get worse this season, Carragher is not getting any faster. This last season we did it either by them sitting way too deep in our half, or by hamstringing Magic from going forward. We had just as many defensive as attacking problems last year, and putting slower players through our spine won't help one bit. It isn't just that Gilberto is slow either, it's that he's not that aggressive a passer either.

Wasn't it reported that Purslow is quite keen on getting VDV whilst Rafa wasn't so much?

If that was true, perhaps this has a chance of actually happening this summer.

Can dynamic players not play defensively ?
[/quote]

Not if it wastes their attacking talent, I suppose. No one's really happy to see Gerrard play the same role.

Banega still has a 12m buy out clause at Valencia.

He's a defensive midfielder with good passing range and he's only 23 or something.

Anyway, surely we should be demanding Cambiasso (as has been mooted) in part-exchange for Masher.

Should Barca come in with big offers I'd take Marquez in part-exchange. He plays as a defensive shield for Mexico and can also cover centre-back if needed. He's matured into an excellent player (his touch was excellent in SA) at 31.

Is VDV really that good? Every time I've ever watched him play, he's been decidedly average. Then again, I think I've fallen asleep during all of Holland's matches in this World Cup.

I've just had a horrible thought; what if this reported 12m budget for Roy is it? What if he gets to spend 12m regardless of sales (Masher etc)?

It's impossible to tell Ross, he was brilliant (for a 16 year old) when he broke into the Charlton team in the Championship but did not progress the following season as a 17 year old in the 1st division. Many youngsters have had this "second season syndrome" and gone onto great things and hopefully it will be the same for Jonjo.

He's 18 now and hopefully Woy is less reluctant than Rafa to blood youngsters. I would like to see him given quite a few 2nd half substitute appearances soon to see if he's capable of the step up in class - he certainly has the potential.

No, he isn't that good. He is capable of scoring the odd goal though, and he's a more than adequate replacement for Benayoun.

Most importantly, the man himself isn't. You'll never come even close to getting the best out of him that way.

Kevin Prince Boateng. Get him.

he looks useful, but that could be just the world cup

Fool me once with africans in the world cup, shame on.......

a fool can't get fooled again

Asamoah's the one. Cultured left foot, brilliant close control and bite in the tackle. He'd be a great buy as a replacement for Masher or Lucas.

21 and playing for Udinese so might be affordable.

I never rated Spit. He didn't even score in that World Cup.

Boateng is proven a useful player already in a very poor Portsmouth side admittedly.

Hmm, having just had a look at Wikipedia, that might be a tad optimistic.

After his first full season in Serie A, following many sensational performances for Udinese, he has been linked with Juventus and his valuation has been set at 30 million euros by Udinese.

Kevin Prince Boateng is one of the biggest twats on the planet. And Gilberto? He's fucking shit and has been for years. From the WC I'd take Honda although would he be a bit light weight on a cold rainy away day at Bolton?

I would like this a lot:

Roy Hodgson lines up Sami Hyypia for return to Liverpool as a coach

2 Jul 2010 10:13:00

Sami Hyypia could be in line for a shock return to Liverpool as part of Roy Hodgson’s backroom staff, Goal.com UK can reveal.

Hyypia, who spent a decade at Anfield before joining Bayer Leverkusen last summer, has another season to run on his contract with the Bundesliga club.

But Hodgson, who was manager of the Finland team that Hyypia captained during their Euro 2008 qualifying campaign, has told friends that he would like to reunite the central defender with Liverpool in a coaching capacity.
The pair had a strong working relationship with Finland and Hyypia said last year that he would like to return to Anfield one day as a coach.

Hodgson, who was appointed as the new Liverpool boss earlier this week, is starting to assemble his new coaching team.

He will be joined at Anfield by his former Fulham assistant Mike Kelly although there has been no official approach for him yet, and Rafael Benitez’s deputy Sammy Lee is expected to be part of Hodgson’s new set-up.

It would also represent a coup for Hodgson to have such a popular recent former player on his backroom staff as Hyypia, who is held in such high esteem by supporters for his service to the club.

Yet the centre-back may prefer to wait another year before going into coaching. After sliding down the pecking order in his final season at Liverpool, he featured in 32 of Leverkusen's 34 Bundesliga matches last season as the unfancied club finished fourth in the league.

Hell yes!

Yes, who would you rather have as your defensive coach? Sami or Pellegrino? Really fucking difficult, this one.

Hodgson's smart if he can pull this one. Would be an amazingly popular move.
