Hangeland? A left back? A back-up striker? Joe Cole (he always seems fond of us)?

Soon to be unveiled Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson is said to be looking to make former Chelsea man Joe Cole his first new signing. The Fulham manager is touted by many to be very close to being named successor to Rafa Benitez at Anfield and he is rumoured to be very keen on getting the financial backing of the board to make an offer for the out of contract England man.
The 28 year old’s wage demands appear to stretch to a three year deal that would cost in the region of £17.1m and with the likes of Arsenal and AC Milan leading the chase for the talented attacker the Merseyside club would have to be quick in registering their interest.
Any such move for the Londoner may well tempt Cole as he could presumably be guaranteed a first team spot at the club, something he seemingly could not secure at Stamford Bridge. Any concern over the player’s insistence on a £110k a week wage would be allayed by the fact that no transfer fee is needed to secure the deal.
Cole is now in a quandary. There will be no shortage of clubs interested in him this summer – and tentative offers are being made – with Liverpool understood to be keen. (Telegraph)

I still see it as a high risk signing, because of his injury record and the substantial wages Joe Cole can demand - but by Christ, it would be lovely to have a left-sided player as good as that little cockney.

Go on Roy, bring him in.

I'm fairly sure another club with CL footy to offer will come in.

If they didnt it'd be great to have him though.

He has been able to sign a pre contract agreement with foreign clubs since January. And there doesn't seem to have been any real interest in him.

If he's insistent on getting himself 100k+ wages I'd say that rules out us, United, Chelsea, Arsenal. Man City could obviously take him, Spurs could probably stretch to that but it might cause some issues within the squad.

I've a feeling Joe Cole might be pricing himself out of a decent move.

I'd say you're almost certainly right. His agent will have made an outrageous demand to Chelsea based on the likes of Lampard's contract, with a nod no doubt to Eastlands and the money they could offer him. Unless we really are being bought by a mega-rich billionaire then I'm afraid we must leave well alone. And it pains me to say that because I've wanted him for years, and thought he would have been perfect for Rafa's 4-2-3-1 formation.

He is likely to be joined at Anfield by his trusted assistant Mike Kelly, though it is expected that Benitez’s number two, Sammy Lee, will remain at the club in some capacity. Kenny Dalglish, too, is not thought to be considering resigning from his post at Liverpool’s Academy, despite his frustration at not being offered a return to the managerial position he last occupied in 1991.
Hodgson will face a litany of tasks upon his arrival, not least confirming the sale of Yossi Benayoun to Chelsea and fielding an expected bid from Benítez, now at Inter Milan, for Javier Mascherano. He must also seek talks with Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres, both of whom remain undecided on their futures, before attempting to spend the £12?million or so transfer fund he will be given.
Though Fulham’s Brede Hangeland has been widely tipped to follow, a £15 million price tag prohibits any swift move. Hodgson is believed to be considering offering Gilberto Silva, the veteran former Arsenal midfielder now at Panathinaikos, a return to the Premier League.

I lifted the above from the telegraphs website, its the last paragraph!

Gilberto Silva, probs to replace Mascher! If theres even a lick of truth to it....which theres probably not!

That'd be right. City get David Silva, we get Gilberto Silva.

Fucking hell, that'd be the quickest way for Hodgson to lose any goodwill at the club.

What probably actually happened was, he probably said as a pundit at the world cup 'yeah gilberto's had a good first half'

i'd take gilberto in a heartbeat for a small fee.

If we are as broke as some people say...

Gilberto Silva would be a decent option for the short term and v. cheap.

a bit more on this.......not sure about the Murphy bit though

Approaches for Gilberto Silva, Brede Hangeland and Rafael van der Vaart are high on Hodgson's wish-list, with an Anfield return for Danny Murphy also under consideration.

Should Mascherano finally be granted his wish to join Barcelona, former Arsenal midfield anchor man Silva would prove a ready-made replacement, after underlining his enduring worth for Brazil at the World Cup and being made available by Panathinaikos, due to the financial crisis in Greece.

One-time Arsenal target Hangeland would readily follow Hodgson to Anfield, as would Murphy, while new Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho would not stand in Van der Vaart's way, as he bids to make his mark at the Bernabeu.

Oh, and I know this won't be popular, but I don't want murphy back. He was great for a time but poor by the end.
[/quote]

Maybe, but he's only going to be a bench option(i hope) and could provide some good experience.

Van der vaart is 27, Hangeland is 29 and Gilberto and Murphy are both 33.

Not that bad

If Hodgson did spend the reported 10+ million for a 29 year old he'd be fucking daft.

We have several Centrebacks and other areas of the squad need more attention..

Hodgson still hasnt even been announced.. nuts.

It's not summer until VDV has been linked with Liverpool

Ain't that the truth, ha.

I'd rather Danny as third-choice CM than Lucas. He's an intelligent player with a good goalscoring record.

Would he want that role? He already had it, then reinvigorated his form by getting a lot more playing time elsewhere.

Lucas is fine as a squad member, just not as a starter, especially if he continues to improve.

He's always said he was a bit hasty in his decision to leave Anfield, and he regretted it.

I'd take Gilberto as a short term solution so we can take the money on Mascherano.

Gilberto is decent but he's well past his best. And he wouldn't have Melo alongside him doing all the running here either.

Fair point.

Nevertheless, I tend to think even his indian summer is over, and I'm a bit suspicious, given his thinking on foreigners in the past, whether he'll be a great influence. He's not exactly the older wiser, galvanising sort.
