Hodgson: Written off too early

Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson believes his team have been tainted by two matches which have done "untold damage" but insists the improvement from the start of the season shows they were written off too early.

Saturday's 3-0 win over West Ham at Anfield was achieved with the minimum amount of fuss - somewhat helpfully in the injury-enforced absence of captain Steven Gerrard - against a side who struggled to rise above mediocre.

The Reds' fourth victory in six Barclays Premier League matches came on the back of a defeat at Stoke the previous week, lifting them to within touching distance of the top four.

Having endured their worst start to a campaign since 1953/54 with six points from eight games they have now accrued 13 from their last six.

Encouraging performances from Raul Meireles, given the freedom of central midfield by the Hammers, and Glen Johnson show there can be optimism despite Gerrard being sidelined for a month.

Hodgson thinks, however, that his side is still being judged on their early-season form.

"There are two games this year which have done us untold damage," he said.

"The first was when a total reserve team - although it does not seem to have been noticed we had 14 first-team players who didn't play - lost to Northampton in the Carling Cup.

"The other was the disastrous (2-1) defeat to Blackpool at the end of a three-match week when we played in Europe.

"Those two defeats were costly for us because they encouraged people to make bold conclusions
but we've lost once in eight (in all competitions).

"There are still a lot of things to do but what pleased me against West Ham was the shape, discipline and organisation of the team.

"If we can keep that going with the quality of players we have got we can have a good season.

"Don't ask me what a good season is because I don't know but after the start we have had where we are now is making us feel pretty pleased."

Do you think what he's saying is true, Sheik? That those two results have distorted everyone's perception of us this season, and that we're steadily improving?

I have to say I don't believe it. It's easier to count the good games we've played in the league this season than the mind-numblingly bad ones. For instance, I saw us beat WBA, and we were dreadful and lucky that day: I think Torres's goal was one of only two shots on target. Same when we drew with Wigan: dreadful and lucky. And Sunderland too. And the way we just wasted so many first halfs, only starting to play in the second half, often after going a goal behind.

But the Stoke game - our last before the stroll at home to West Ham - was the most depressing of all. Because it made our little good run (against Blackburn, Bolton and Chelsea) look like a blip; because it exemplified all the things we've been doing wrong all season.

Leaving aside results, I just don't see any consistent improvement in our performances. And interviews like that one seem to me to be insulting the fans' intelligence.

Sorry if that seems like a dissection, but I think Hodgson's either lying or deluding himself.
Nope.

He's been on the defensive ever since he got here because he was only here because of the exceptional circumstances in which the club found itself. Since then, our shoddy, erratic form we've seen during his tenure has only served to entrench that defensiveness (in the media - before Spidey starts banging on about 'maintaining a high line again) and now it's gone so far he looks delusional.

"Don't ask me what a good season is because I don't know"

Fuck off you stupid bellend.

Not interested in anything Roy has to say. All I want is the results with a minimum of fuss and no excuses!

hodgson is a fucking CUNT for trying to create an 'a team/b team' mentality in the squad. I fucking hate him.
Yeah, playing the reserves and subs in the League Cup is a whole new thing for football.

For fuck sake.

I dont think he expresses himself well but to me he's just talking about expectations, if he said success would be qualifying for Europe some would be banging on about it not being good enough.

I'm not talking about playing them I'm talking about how he TALKS about them, 'oh, it was only our B TEAM', 'oh, we lost because we played our reserves'.

NO! you should refer to them (reserves/fringe) as liverpool because if they are wearing red they ARE liverpool and should be treated as such. if you want fringe players and youngsters to to show pride in liverpool show pride in them, he is creating an 'us (reserves) and them (first team)' mentality when it should be 'us (liverpool) and them (everyone else)' mentality. everytime he mentions 'b team' it seriously winds me up.

I'll go further and say look how fergie treats (or at least talks about his entire squad), he squeezes every single last drop out of his players who are all ready to run through a brick wall for him. how many superstars at manu? 3? less?

Weve got one good striker, even cl qualification is a big ask, and with the off field issues at the start of the season, we've gone into this campaign more or less in the dark about what to expect or demand. He's just lifting the pressure, like sheiky said though, its always going to be dissected.

Well yeah, but that's because it's not good enough.

We did play the reserves. They know they are the reserves. They were playing for an opportunity to break into the first team. They knew this too.

You're searching for criticism, again.

look, I know what I want to hear from the manager. I want the manager to make the players feel like they are 10 foot tall even if they are fucking shit. if you are telling them everyweek they are rubbish they will believe they are rubbish. a lot of football is skill/ability and a lot of football mentality/attitude. you make players believe they are better than they are pretty soon they will start believe it themselves.

it's not motivating anyone, in fact what purpose does serve to talk down your squad. beiieve what you want to believe but this is what I believe as a supporter.

There's not much to disagree with there, Spide. It was the Shanks method after all.

But I don't believe any reserve or sub is going to read those quotes and feel downhearted in any way whatsoever. So I don't buy into this untold damage theory which you are proposing.

Bollocks. Actions speak louder than words, and if the concern is that the kids aren't being made to feel good enough, I'd suggest asking the likes of kelly and spearing how they feel and if they feel undervalued.

Better still, just compare what's going on to how the best manager in the game gets the best out of HIS squad.

Oh.

FFS.

There's some excessive stuff being posted here.

So basically, reserves shouldn't be called reserves any more in case it upsets them?

it's difficult to get into the mind set of a footballer who is earning literally thousands a week and I'm sure there are footballers with the mental strength to bounce back regardless what happens on the pitch but I'm sure there are plenty of players that are mentally 'weak' and take to heart anything that is said about them and you could argue such weak players should be bombed out of anfield asap but on the otherhand aren't you better served building up these players confidence? aren't you better served deflecting critisism onto yourself and protecting your players? aren't you better served making your players feel like they are brazil circa 1970 rather than...well, liverpool circa 2010?

I say all this but the truth is footballers shold have mental strength but I can see the other side of the argument as well, I'm just saying what I personally want to hear out of the managers lips and all the managers I've admired in the past took exactly this approach.

well, quite. I'm sure even if manu got kicked out you wouldn't hear fergie say 'oh, it was only our resrves/B team'

winning goes to winning, from the reserves right the way up to the first team. instill the mentaility that there is only 'liverpool'.
