Hodgson in frame to replace CapelloFebruary 18, 2011

ESPNsoccernet understands Roy Hodgson is gathering support amongst Football Association powerbrokers as they consider potential replacements for Fabio Capello.

Roy Hodgson is the reigning Manager of the Year thanks to his exploits with Fulham
Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp is believed to be the current frontrunner to replace the Italian when he leaves his post following the conclusion of England's 2012 campaign.

However, it is understood that Hodgson, who has just been appointed as Roberto Di Matteo's replacement at West Brom following a disappointing spell at Liverpool, is also in contention.

The FA is insistent it is very committed to Capello while he remains in position and it may be some time before a definitive shortlist of replacements is drawn up. Indeed, the subject was not on the agenda in the first board meeting held by new FA chairman David Bernstein on Thursday.

But Hodgson is regarded within the FA as a safe pair of hands and of course fits the criteria of being English, which the FA is keen to fulfil if possible. Sunderland's Steve Bruce has also been earmarked as a possible contender.

Former Aston Villa manager Martin O'Neill, and indeed his replacement Gerard Houllier, are also under consideration, but Redknapp remains the favourite after a week that saw him mastermind a 1-0 victory against Milan in San Siro.

An FA insider told ESPNsoccernet: "Everyone is assuming the FA have made up their minds. This is a completely incorrect assumption. There are a lot of factors the FA need to consider, and they may not be as clear cut as everyone might assume.

"The FA has a new chairman, and much will depend on his opinion, his outlook, and how he wants to go about looking at the criteria to find the next England manager, whenever that time comes."

Meanwhile, it is understood that Bernstein's first board meeting produced an agreement in principle that two independent board members will be appointed by the FA - a concession to pressure from the Government.

It is understood that the issue was given cautious approval by the board. The biggest problem is winning over the full FA Council, which is generally opposed to radical change.

Good luck England.

I think I would rather see 'Arry get the job and Hodgson go to Spurs.

I don't really care a great deal about the England team but it would be nice to see those smug Spurs chumps brought down a peg or two.

Given that 'Arry is more than a bit dodgy though, I can't really see it

hahahaha. Fucking hell.

Before his little sojourn to Liverpool in the summer, this would not have been as outlandish as some are making it out to be, and indeed had we had a poll this time last year on the next England Manager he would have been top, of that I have no doubt.

England Manager is a whole lot different job than Club Management.

I don't see it's so daft as people think despite his errors when here.

Of Course Rafa is still jobless and that would suit him down to the ground, not that I am advocating it, but we could do a lot worse.

"Safe Pair of Hands". hahahaha.

Thats what I thought. Ah fuck it, they can't get relegated.

At least "Judging him after ten games" covers an entire qualification period and two seasons.

Alas, I've not seen too much of Roy's tactical abilities/adaptability during his time with Fulham and us. With the quality of players available to an international manager, surely he ought to create a system to get the most of out them, instead of picking players to fit into his preferred one?

England have employed such English managerial luminaries as Taylor, Keegan and McClaren in the past. Hodgson is nailed on for it.

I would have agreed with you in the summer but not now as I don't think Roy is thick skinned enough for the more high profile jobs and the pressure will get to him. If he felt we treated him harshly, wait until the English press get a hold of him if the results don't go according to plan. I can see another Turnip Taylor on the cards.

Also he will need to change the way he answers question in interviews...

Journalist - Roy, Roy, can we win the World Cup?

Roy - Let's see if we qualify first...

I can't imagine that sort of response going down too well.

I think that is the best point yet Tinto.
Another area that I thought Roy would be good at prior to him joining would be his handling of the press, it was in reality even worse than Rafa, and that is saying something, a disaster , he would get ripped as England Manager

I'm glad Brendan isn't here to remind me that I thought he'd do ok for us. Everyone else has probably forgot and won't use it against me.

I think supporting Hodgson was like a war crime. Long after the bodies have all been cleaned up and the mourning is over, nobody blames anyone, even those who were involved in the most ugly ways. We just appreciate that there was something awful and mad in the ether and people got caught up in it. It was of it's own time. We can't forgive but we can forget.

[/quote]I would LOVE Rafa to be the new England manager.

Roy Hodgson is a shit manager who went from Viking Norway to Liverpool FC in a couple of years. His level is far below England standards. He has NO (And I mean zero) philosophy for how his teams is supposed to attack. To be honest Egil Olsen would be a better choice.

I don't really care about England these days, so it would probably be amusing for a while to see him bumbling through internationals.

That said, we've not seen a cohesive decent England side for years and years now, so I doubt we'd notice any difference.

So the quote comes from an "insider". So, in other words, its the opinion of another ESPN journalist then.

I would love to see what excuses Rafa would come up with if he got the England job. I think i want him to get it more than Roy

Yes, but Roy wouldn't. He's neither willing nor able to change his ways.

I think i'd actually start to watch England games if he was made the manager.

It's a dream pairing mate, one of the best english managers around in charge of the golden generation.
