Hibs: Liverpool midfielder set to sign 18-month deal for Calderwood

Published Date: 28 January 2011
By DAVID HARDIE
HIBS boss Colin Calderwood was today set to make Icelandic Under-21 midfielder Victor Palsson his fourth signing of the week following the arrivals of Matt Thornhill, Martin Scott and Richie Towell.
The 19-year-old is understood to have agreed an 18-month deal subject to a medical after impressing during a closed doors match against Dunfermline at East Mains earlier this week, as exclusively revealed by the Evening News.

And Palsson will be no stranger to Easter Road, having played as a second-half substitute as Iceland secured their place in this summer's European Under-21 Championship finals, a 2-1 win in the Capital last October completing a 4-2 victory on aggregate over Billy Stark's side.
Two of the young Scots that night, Paul Hanlon and David Wotherspoon, will now become team-mates of Palsson who revealed the prospect of playing in the Euro finals in Denmark was partly behind his decision to quit Liverpool for Hibs.

Disclosing he's "optimistic" his move will be successfully completed shortly, Palsson admitted he'd been impressed by what he'd seen in Edinburgh. He said: "After a two-year stay at Liverpool I think this could be a good step for me." Palsson came to Liverpool's attention while playing for Danish outfit AG Aarhus having started his career in his homeland with Fylkir, the Anfield outfit paying £300,000 to secure the 6ft 1in midfielder's signature two years ago.

A regular in the Liverpool reserve side, Palsson has recently been on loan with Dagenham and Redbridge.

I guess he wasn't good enough.
Kakaniclic, Dalle Valle now Palsson.
Mavinga will probably leave as well.

Foreign talents being shipped out.

Pity, he good in the reserves. Lacked physicality but had good composure and passing skills

Playing for Hibs in Scotland will suit him then....

Hibernian can confirm that manager Colin Calderwood has brought in his fourth new signing of the transfer window with the arrival of Iceland under-21 internationalist Victor Palsson from Liverpool.

Palsson follows in the footsteps of Matt Thornhill, Martin Scott and loan recruit Richie Towell by joining Hibernian in January, and has signed a deal until the end of season 2011/2012.

The 19-year-old midfielder, who can also operate in defence, says he is thrilled at the prospect of playing at Easter Road again - after playing at the stadium in October.

Palsson said: "I played for Iceland under-21s against Scotland at Easter Road a few months ago and I was really impressed with the atmosphere; it is a special stadium.

"As soon as I was aware of Hibernian's interest, I was really keen to join the club and to work with the manager; it is a really exciting move for me.

"I believe the Scottish league will suit my way of playing and I am looking forward to playing for Hibernian.

"Edinburgh is a great city and everything about the move indicates it is the right decision for me."

After graduating from Liverpool's Academy, Palsson has been a regular in the club's reserve side and also gained experience while out on loan at English League Two side, Dagenham and Redbridge.

Boss Calderwood believes Palsson has a lot to offer the team; both in the short term and in the longer term.

Calderwood said: "Victor is a young player with terrific potential and a player, who has been on our radar for a long time.

"He has got a great pedigree
and we are pleased to be able to bring him to the football club."

All the best to the lad.

VICTOR PALSSON hopes lessons learned from Steven Gerrard will help him put one over close pal Eggert Jonsson and ensure Hibs finally get the better of Hearts this season.

Colin Calderwood brought the 19-year-old from Liverpool at the end of last week, one of six January signings for struggling Hibs.

The defensive midfielder, who helped Iceland Under-21s to end Scotland's Euro 2011 hopes last October, made his debut in the 3-0 defeat at Dundee United.

But Palsson insists his footballing education at Anfield has prepared him for the harsh reality of an SPL relegation battle.

The teenager, signed by the Reds in 2009 for £300,000 from Danish outfit AG Aarhus, believes his experience of playing with the likes of Liverpool captain Gerrard will help aid Hibs' cause.

Ahead of tonight's key clash with relegation rivals St Mirren, he said: "I was at Liverpool for two years and it was fantastic. They made me the player I am today and made me ready for first-team football.

"I reached all my goals. I trained and played with the first team and learned from guys such as Steven Gerrard and Daniel Agger.

"Stevie G played with the reserves during one of the pre-seasons and that was memorable.

"Stevie played beside me in the centre of midfield against Tranmere. He scored a goal in that game and I was the captain so that was a great day for me.

"I definitely learnt a lot from him and from the other players there.

"But I've signed an 18-month deal here because I thought it was the right time for me to move on to the next thing. I need to play first-team football to improve my career."
