Henry Sets Expectations

the amount of money the yanks have spent, it is not unreasonable for them to expect a top 4 finish. whether that actually happens is another matter entirely.

True but we didn't, some of us actually pointed it out at the time in fact! Either way i think it's fair to say that even with the unusual shopping list we followed we still have a reasonably good chance of finishing top four, i just hope the signings do the business because the pressure on Kenny will be amazing if we don't get back in there.

Carroll - £35m
Suarez - £22m
Henderson - £13m (Rising to £16m)
Downing - £20m
Adam £7m

£97m without much in the way of sales so far, just Konchesky and a few outgoing youngsters. Minus the £50m for Torres and £8m for Ryan Babel. So that's an estimated outlay of around £40m.

I agree we should be challenging for the top four minimum, but with the teams above us spending (bar Chelsea and Spurs so far), it's going to be tough.

It's only really Citah that's really splashed the cash though, right?

De Gea, Young and Phil Jones?

De Gea was kinda a necessity but do you think they've significantly strengthened with the purchase of the other 2?

I rate Young highly.

And Jones is good cover for the permanently fucked Ferdinand, and the still-to-come-of-age pair of Smalling and Evans. Plus they sold Brown and O'Shea, so they needed to cover that.

They maybe good players but I don't think these purchases have significantly improved them though whereas Citahs purchase may have pushed them further. Don't get me wrong, Man Utd will still be up there but they are defeatable.

Well, yeah. But, er, they haven't... yet.

United lost 8-2 last night to marseille. Evra smalling and jones played.

ALL teams can only play 11 players at a time.
Im confident our 11 will beat most teams 11. When United, Chelsea, Arsenal and Spurs are drawing at the weekend after a tough Wednesday night game im confident we will pick up all the points.
City are the biggest danger because they have two full fucking squads to pick from.

You said it was only really City who've splashed the cash. United have too (regardless of whether it significantly improves them, which it does anyway) and Chelsea no doubt will, as will Arsenal, they'll all strengthen.

I'd wait to see if the mentioned players actually fail before pining for these so called better players. for instance;
if mata does eventually join arsenal, will be interesting to see if he has a more productive season than downing, or if aguero has a more productive season than carroll.

with regards to kenny's new signings, I'm actually glad he has gone with a winger (someone we actually NEED) rather than ANOTHER player who wants to play off the striker, another player who will drift inside (another to fling or the pile). we were never in for aguero but he looks similar to suarez but without carroll we'd have no one to hold up the ball, a vital ingredient when trying to secure points on the road. I don't agree with everything kenny has but can we at least 'see' what his signings were trying to acheive?

Completely agree with Downing, I wanted Mata more than most, but not instead of downing, as well as, they were completely different targets in my head. Not choice one and two.

I reckon everyone will be happy with the Downing deal come June.

Ryan, do you ever predict anything positive before it happens?! A lot of doom and gloom about everything man, - I remember especially before the city game, and we creamed them...

Let's see how these new lads bed in before we put the weight of negativity on 'em. Besides, as we know having Kenny as manager can bring out the best in players..

But Dreamy became the anti-Dreamy, so to be the anti-Dreamy, is suggesting he's the anti-anti-Dreamy, which is positivity on an unthinkable level of joy.

Ryan is a misery and dreamy is simple

Yes. Read it again though.

Who would you buy for 85 mill then Ryan? Realisticly.

And why would Sneijder in Berbatov out be so good for them? Sneijder plays behind the striker, thats were Rooney likes to operate during games. Cant see where Sneijder would fit in unless they change their set up.

Mrdoomandgloom.com these days mate. Cheer up!

I think Ryan is aware of his miserable postings lately, but my hunch is he's doing it to protect himself from what he feels will be the 'let down.'

My only hope is that when we win the league, he'll happily admit he was wrong.

Dalglish hails Henry for backing

Dalglish has splashed out more than £100million on new talent since taking over as manager in January and he has paid tribute to the club's American owners Fenway, led by John W Henry, for putting up the money.

Dalglish is looking to make further reinforcements before the season, with Newcastle left-back Jose Enrique expected to join, and a centre-half also on the Scot's shopping list.

"Everyone hopes all their signings will come in and make a huge impact, but we believe we have improved and enhanced the talent we already had here," said Dalglish.

"Spending money does not guarantee you success. (But) I don't know of any football club that has ever had success that has not spent money. So it is necessary.

"But it's even more important to spend it wisely. We've acted responsibly in the transfer market and we've also acted responsibly and respectfully with the owners, who have been fantastically supportive during the window.

"If there is a better owner that is as supportive as John W Henry, then they have done very well for themselves because he's fantastically supportive, a genuinely good fella.

"I never had any doubts (about Henry's credentials), so you need to ask the people who had the doubts."

He has been miserly lately, but he rates Lucas highly (so do I but not quite as high), so seems content to have a steady Eddie in one instance but not in others. We've got a team of fighters now, whether that's enough to bridge the gap remains to be seen.

Neil made some good points and as usual it was turned into something it wasn't intended to be, I'd imagine he meant we need a winger more than a playmaker, which is more what Mata is and less what Downing is. Mata's brilliant mind and I'm disappointed that it doesn't look like we'll get that marquis signing, but the squad in the long run (despite indifferent preseason form) looks like it'll be much better with more depth, especially when you factor Kenny's willingness to give youth a chance.

I don't think Downing, Henderson, Adam and Carroll will let anyone down, but in a way, that's kind of the problem.

They're never going to shine in the same way Suarez has, or Torres before him, and it's that kind of quality you need to be competing for the league. Hopefully next season we'll be able to attract Europes premium talent to come and play for us.

I'm not convinced we couldn't have attracted better players for the money, but small steps and all that..

you don't know that squiggs. who thought that 'that' defender signed from william II for less that 3m would go on to become one of the greatest defenders we've ever hand. sometimes players step up a level when they move to a new club. players like downing and carroll may explode this coming season, we just have to wait and see.
