Henry demanding top-four finish

Liverpool owner John W Henry has warned Kenny Dalglish it would be a "major disappointment" if the club fail to secure Champions League football this season.

Significant investment in new players has raised expectations at Liverpool, with Jordan Henderson, Charlie Adam and Stewart Downing all arriving as big-money summer captures.

That trio will be used to support the January arrivals of Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll, brought in to replace Fernando Torres, and Henry now expects to see a return on his investment.

"It's too early for us to start talking about winning the league," Henry told Dagbladet. "In my opinion Manchester United are the ones to beat. They have a good squad, and look really good.

"Our main goal is to qualify for the Champions League. If we don't it would be a major disappointment."

Dalglish's side continue pre-season preparations against Valerenga, live on ESPN in the UK, on Monday.

Errrrrr.

On one hand its worrying to see the owners getting involved laying down 'demands'.

But on the other hand, he is only saying what most of us are saying. Champions League qualification has been a minimum requirement for our past few managers so I don't see why it shouldn't be now

That, plus the way we played under Kenny last season. Results in the second half of the season were good enough for 2nd or 3rd.

Well, what I saw today was definetly not top 4 material. Still, its a marathon and not a sprint.

so if we dont get top 4 do we think henry would consider getting rid of kenny? how would people feel about this?

He's not demanding. That's ESPN's take on things. He's just spent a significant sum of cash this summer, and he wants results. It's not like last season - now Kenneth has pressure to deliver, albeit probably not a huge pressure. I think it's good that Henry is driving higher expectations. This is all good. Oh and pre-season means NOUGHT.

Pre season means something if we start the season badly, because then we have royaly fucked up in planning for the new season.

Some of the players moved like trees today if that helps?

Top 4 would be a possibility if we'd spent that 85M we waxed on Carroll, Henderson, Downing and Adam on some better players.

It's still a possibility, we have one of the largest squads in the league now. We are a LB and a back up striker away from having a very good chance indeed.

Frankly I will be shocked if we are not top 4 at the end of the season.

Well said Count. We'll be there under this manager. It would have been nice to sign Mata or another flair player mind. Not sure why we're not.

It's still a very real possibility, but yeah, point taken. Nobody else I know would have spend so much on that collection of players.

Even though the heading of the article is a bit misleading, with the money invested so far and the fact we are not playing European football( less games and allowing us to focus completley on the league) I think the owners will be expecting/demanding a top 4 finish from Kenny. The squad we have at the moment should be good enough to challenge for a top four place, we have added quality but the battle for 4th will be massive again this year. Whether Kenny has spent well and strengthened the right areas will be closely monitored by the media for sure, and I think John Henry will want a top 4 finish in return for his 80-90m outlay.

Carroll - £35m
Suarez - £22m
Henderson - £13m (Rising to £16m)
Downing - £20m
Adam £7m

£97m without much in the way of sales so far, just Konchesky and a few outgoing youngsters. Minus the £50m for Torres and £8m for Ryan Babel. So that's an estimated outlay of around £40m.

I agree we should be challenging for the top four minimum, but with the teams above us spending (bar Chelsea and Spurs so far), it's going to be tough.
