On your bike: Gerrard told Torres to leave Liverpool

Fernando Torres has revealed that Steven Gerrard told him to leave Liverpool prior to his £50million switch to Chelsea.

The Spaniard spent four years at Anfield, forming a formidable understanding with the former England skipper, and says Gerrard is the best player he has played alongside during his career.

Gerrard famously almost joined the Blues himself after lifting the Champions League title in 2005 with Liverpool, and Torres has revealed the Kop legend told him to make the move to Stamford Bridge.

"There's one player that influenced me above anyone else and that's Gerrard. He changed my career, my ambition, wanting to win, he changed everything.

"Even when I was leaving Liverpool he told me 'go, think about yourself. Do what's best for you - you've nothing to prove'," he toldthe Sun.

"He changed the way I saw things, telling me that I could get much higher than what I had always thought. I'll never find a team-mate like him."

Torres, who is currently back on loan at Atletico Madrid where he begun his career, recently played at Anfield again in a charity game organised by Gerrard and Jamie Carragher.

He partnered Luis Suarez in the game, giving Reds fans a glimpse of what could have been if he had opted against the move to Stamford Bridge.

Despite leaving under a cloud, the Liverpool fans sang his song during the game.

There's no guarantee he spoke to them. Could be quotes from a Spanish interview

They've done that before.

He didn't say what they said he said, reading that.

But then that's that rag.
It's heavily implied

I'm not a fan of the fact our talismanic captain, was telling one the most lethal finishers in our history, to leave

He didn't really tell him to leave though...said do what's best for your career and Torres decided that was to join Chelsea(maybe they were the only team in for him at that time) and that was that.

Highly doubt Gerrard told Torres 'go ahead lad, sign for Chelsea'

"Even when I was leaving Liverpool he told me 'go, think about yourself."

So Gerrard knew he was going to Chelsea, and was still supportive

Don't like that

It's amazing what quotes from various sources that people will believe when it suits them.

It doesn't say Gerrard told him to go to Chelsea. Gerrard told told him to do what he felt best for him. We don't even know when Gerrard told him this. Plus it's from the rag.

So when Torres told him what was happening, i.e. he was leaving for Chelsea, Gerrard gave him some kind words of encouragement.
Not once does he mention Gerrard telling him go find a club and get out of Liverpool.

That's a load of rubbish so many people spout about his last 18 months.

He scored 27 goals in 45 games in his last 18 months with us.
He scored 22 goals in 2009-2010. He scored 9 goals in 2010-2011. His form was awful, his head was always down. He passed backwards rather than taking on defenders and he was injured a lot of the time, especially during the 2009-2010 season. In fact, that season Liverpool finished 7th.

It's not just about goals and as one of the senior players in the team, his play also counted.

Ya 9 goals, he left half way through the season.

We knew this already, I thought,

I don't see what the big deal is here.

Friends move on all the time in all walks of life. What do some of you expect him to do? Turn on the water works? Cut off all ties with him?

Don't wanna be here? Fine. Do whatever you think is best.
