He's picked over £20m in wages since we signed him. Mostly for fuck all.

It's weird that wages are not more closely linked to appearances in professional sport in general.

It would be incredibly unfair if they were. Sport is already a lottery with injuries.

Sales pros live with this every day. Base plus commission (sometimes 100% commission). I fail to see how paying players for appearances with some kind of base is any less fair. Sure they deal with injuries, sales people deal with 100 things out of their control. Try hitting numbers in Covid time, for example. Not that this would every happen I just don't think it would be as unfair as you say.

The players DO assume the risk of injury throughout all of their development. They are retarding their ability to have any sort of alternate job skill or education, in service of one highly specialized skill that has very limited job opportunities and no guarantees. At any moment they could feel a sharp pain and the whole thing is over. The clubs encourage them to take those risks from a very early age.

Then they make it, and they are injured, and the club isn't supposed to assume that risk either for the duration of their contract?

Fuck that.

K that's a good point. The base would have to be high enough to account for that risk but still, the players choose this career path. The clubs don't force them to pursue something that could go up in smoke with one bad tackle. Has to be balance. How many other players might get paid more, or have a chance at a pro contract, if clubs weren't on the hook for full wages in event of injury?

Well It's shit that it's us taking the hit, To be fair it pretty uncommon for us to do that. If you think Naby is bad look at the unbelievable fuck job Ozil and Sanchez did on Arsenal and Utd.

I'm not saying it's right but fair play to him for riding the gravy train. I'd do it. As you quite rightly said - It very weird that wages and appearances don't go hand in hand.

The players "chose" the career path before the age of consent. How many 14 year olds are making sound long term decisions?

That's a whole other issue, and one worth thinking about as it relates to the overall wellbeing of the kids vs the dreams of the parents. Are you saying that by 18 the kids have missed chances to make other career choices such that they are locked into trying to be professional athletes? Looking at my 18 year old I sure hope there's still opportunities to make some different choices!

What about all the training sessions they do day in day out?

I assume we have insurance for that kind of thing.

I read something a while ago saying we used to do that when costs were relatively low and long term injuries weren't as common so premiums were much lower. Now we just grin and bear it

Or instead of an appearances element, flip it around and have 2 tiers of salary - higher tier for when a players is available for selection, lower tier when they are not. Maybe too simple but makes sense to me.

I dont mind players earning what they can. Limited years to earn this kind of money and they're paid by billionaires. Make hay while The Lying Rag shines.

As a fan, it's frustrating to see players injured and unable to make an impact on the pitch. The money is secondary.

Anyways, employees everywhere should have sick pay.

That's what we do have. Players get performance and appearance bonuses.

I'm actually quite looking forward to his return, he can run with the ball, noone else in the middle of the park seems to want to break beyond the fowards or push with the ball.

One of the most disappointing signing I can ever reminder.
Missing piece/Gerrard replacement my arse.
Vey different player from Gerrard. Despite the frustrations he has always been one I really hope to see succeed. The reason being that he has the potential to be a huge contributor for us. The fact that it has not happened (for more than a game or two at a time) is hugely disappointing, and mainly down to injuries. I accept that it is unlikely that he will ever fulfil his potential for us, but while he's here I'll keep on hoping.
