Bruce Grobbelaar says Liverpool lead title race DESPITE Simon Mignolet's flaws
Legendary Anfield goalkeeper says his former club should not be top of the league when the Belgian has let in 42 goals

Flailing: Belgian keeper Mignolet clutches at thin air against Man City
Bruce Grobbelaar fears Simon Mignolet is Liverpool’s weak link as they chase a first championship in 24 years.
Liverpool legend Grobbelaar believes there are big flaws in Mignolet’s game and says he cannot be compared to his Chelsea title-race rival Petr Cech.
Grobbelaar points to the fact that Mignolet has let in 42 goals and Cech just 24, and claimed Liverpool “should not be top of the league” with such a bad defensive record.
Mignolet, 26, moved to Anfield last summer from Sunderland for £9m but has dropped a string of clangers which have left Grobbelaar insisting he must improve his game.
Grobbelaar, in an interview to promote the Prostate Cancer UK charity, said: “Mignolet is a good shot-stopper, but by no means the best all-round keeper.
“A good keeper should be easy on his feet, plays out from the back and commands himself in the penalty box.
“A keeper should never be beaten – as he has been – by a header from three yards out. The keeper coach has to work him harder and he can improve a lot, of course he can.
“Another point is his positioning on free-kicks. His starting position is not right. The team and the defence is too far back for the keeper. They’re on top of him. He’s not commanding enough.

Should Liverpool replace Mignolet in the summer?

“Another reason I look at Mignolet is the number of goals he’s conceded. Any team which concedes that number of goals should not be top of the league.
“You compare that to the number of goals Petr Cech has conceded at Chelsea and that tells you the difference. Any good team starts from the back.”
Mignolet was a big gamble by the Reds' boss Brendan Rodgers as he was brought in to replace Pepe Reina who went to Napoli on a season long loan.
The Belgian has had some good games but some high profile errors – like the gaffe at Manchester City which came during a bad spell at Christmas – have raised some doubts and questions about his form.

Cheering them on: Grobbelaar reckons Reds can win title.. even with Mignolet in goal

European Cup winner Grobbelaar, who won the title six times with Liverpool, believes Liverpool can win the Premier League this season thanks to their strike force.
Grobbelaar believes Luis Suarez, Daniel Sturridge and Raheem Sterling are the best in the Premier League and will take some stopping.
“Can they win the league?” asked Grobbelaar. “Yes. Most definitely, yes. I was asked back in November and I said then they could win it and everybody laughed.
“But they’re not laughing now. They’re playing great football. This forward line – Suarez, Sturridge and Sterling – is fantastic. They’ve got pace, they’re great to watch.
"They do let in too many goals. But they can definitely win it.”

Grobbelaar believes the standard of keepers is high, but was dismissive of Tottenham’s Hugo Lloris.
He added: “Generally, in the Premier League, Ben Foster has been brilliant. I would play Brad Friedel more at Tottenham as I’m not a fan of Hugo Lloris at all. He’s not a full bag of tricks. De Gea has been brilliant at times.
“The other one I like is Tim Krul. But, once again, there’s lots of foreign keepers in there which is a shame for English keepers coming through. There’s not enough and you have to look to foreign keepers.”

Here is a review of Grob in his first season with us

Grobbelaar's performance in the City game was a masterpiece of slapstick ingenuity, encapsulating Liverpool's lack of direction. In the first half, he skittered out from his goalline as though he was still high on the Christmas egg nog, missing a simple catch then sprawling around on the floor as his defenders cleared up the mess. In the second half, lessons not learned, he attempted to cradle a high ball in his arms, only dyspraxically to funnel it to the floor, allowing Steve Kinsey to lash for goal; on the line, Phil Thompson was forced to show his keeper how to make a save. Finally Kevin Reeves flicked softly towards the bottom corner, where Grobbelaar bundled into his own net, the culmination of an all-round horror show in which Liverpool, but especially their keeper, looked totally shot.

The result, and Grobbelaar's display, would indeed become significant, but not quite in the way everyone imagined it would at the time. It represented Paisley's Liverpool nadir, but also a turning point, team and keeper pulling themselves together in the second half of the season to win a remarkable championship. None of which took away from the sheer haplessness of this goalkeeping display, mind you, which added to Bruce's Clown Prince legend. "Grobbelaar's misery is complete," ran Alan Parry's famous commentary. "Reeves gets the goal, but really it was almost an own goal by this sad figure." Parry was displaying some brass neck by going there, but even so, has a commentary ever been so damning?

Load of crap the whole interview. Foster and Friedel? Christ.

Its not really though is it?, what he says about Mig is correct.

The Lloris comment is debatable, some think hes quality and some think hes a bit of a clown and an accident waiting to happen.

I hope Mig doesn't read these comments though, theres no need for one of our ex goalkeepers to be coming out and saying this sort of stuff at this time, bad form Grobbelaar, he should have waited until the end of the season to criticise.

He's made three mistakes this season.
Stick to the cookery shows you fucking plank.

He's not as bad as many make out at times, but he does make me nervous often. For some reason he doesn't leave me feeling confident.

Be honest, who is not shitting a brick every time a ball is crossed anywhere near Mignolet?, just hope its not him (or anyone) that ends up being the fall guy but if i had to bet on it being someone it would be him.

I shat more bricks when Reina had to deal with crosses.

It's a different kettle of fish but I wasn't impressed with Hamann speaking out about Suarez diving this week either.

“I don’t agree with his antics. He’s a fantastic player but, unless someone sends him off for play-acting, [he won’t stop]. He’s been better recently but against Manchester City he was back to his old tricks.”

Whether he's right or not it's the wrong time, feel free to say whatever you want in a month but there's no need to be pushing the idea of sending him off now.

Yeah, that really pissed me off from Hamman too. Particularly when he and Hansen had agreed he actually was tripped in the big 'play-acting' moment on MOTD. If Suarez gets sent off before the end of the season for diving Didi is going to get pelters.

Grobbelaar can get to fuck the brown paper bag, 'score predicting' fucker. Still have nightmares over that andy cole fucking hattrick against him where he just kept falling over and letting the ball in every time cole shot.

I really wanted Grobbelaar to be innocent. I was a keeper in primary school and Grobs was my hero. He was a man for giving you heart palpitations though. Particularly when he decided to start bringing balls out from the back. He has a cheek to question Ming.

Grobbelaar was completely and utterly fearless, and that led to saves *and* mistakes which few other keepers - then or now - would be capable of. As others have said, he's the last person to have good reason to criticise Minge.

Very harsh on Ming. Yeah he's made a couple of mistakes, but he's fucking saved our skin on far more occasions.

Also, lol @Woland

He was very error prone. I thought clemence was more solid. I'd have clemence, Pepe, then bruce

Red M: IMO no. If all three were at their best I'd put Grobbelaar bottom of the list (agree with localny's order of preference), though I don't think either of the others could have managed some of the saves he made.

I'm too young to remember Clemence, but I do remember Brucie, and I can remember him making some fantastic saves. But I also remember him for making stupid mistakes (which in hindsight were probably intentional clever "mistakes") One particular incident involved him making a "save" with his hand behind the fucking line. And he was up like a flash to inform the ref that it was a goal. Can't remember who it was against, but it was an FA Cup match.

Chicken and egg. Is ming nervous because of the dodgy defence in front of him or the other way around? Ether way, I think I'd like to see a settled defence for a good few months next season before I start judging either really.

Nothing to do with the defence IMO. Ming's (comparative) weakness in the air was already apparent when he was still at Sunderland.
