This is often what happens. the court of public opinion, correct in this case, is capricious and lacks any sense of proportion or context, meanwhile most rape isn't punishable in the court of law. This is often because of the toxic relationships involved in the first place.

I don't know about Mendy's case, but the other part of the frequently unpunished aspect of rape is that you have two conflicting witnesses to a crime, and unless and even if a woman is clear headed enough after being raped to go through the additional trauma of immediately pursuing a rape kit, it is difficult to prove, esp if not injurious.
