Modo

Not counting the likes of Drogba, Lampard, Gerrard, Kaka etc who are winding down in US.

Witsel - Zenit
Dzagoev - CSKA
Kokorin - D Moscow
Pato - Sao Paolo (Jesus he's only 26 been around forever it seems)
Yarmolenko - Kiev
Giovinco - Toronto
Sneijder? - Galatasaray

Any more?

Witsel I don't get, looks a terrific player to me and can't understand why he hasn't moved on

If you are buying from the lines of PSG it really doesn't matter that the french league isnt top tier. The fees will still be huge, look at what Utd paid for Martial from Monaco. You could buy most strikers in Spain or Germany for that sort of outlay.

World football is going through a bad phase with average, and unskilled players. The best players in the world are less than a handful now - and they are currently playing in Spain. In many ways one could say that the talent pool matches the state of FIFA. There is absolutely no guarantee if you buy a player from one league that he will do well in another - of the players that could do it you can only say it is true for the likes of Suarez, Messi, and Ronaldo (notice I did not include Neymar ? - fucking pussy who would not last in the PL).

Just don't rate any of them at the moment. People on here talk about buying world class talent - but who the fuck is world class these days ? - look at Falcao at Chelsea ? - and that other guy that went to Real Madrid who was the talk of the World Cup (played for Columbia). They are just OVERPAID, and Over-rated shit these days. I would actually hate to be a manager of any of the top teams these days - who would you buy that would guarantee you excellence in their position ? - No One.

That "other guy that went to Real Madrid who was the talk of the World Cup" has scored 15 goals in 31 appreances for them. Hardly "Over-rated shit".

He joined last season and your tellimg me he has only played 31 games ? Those goals mean jack shit in Spain these days.

James had a great season by all accounts.

It does feel like there is a lack of talent though. Maybe it's just because we're all too aware of every league now whereas in the past players elsewhere still had some mystique.

James is in a team where everyone plays 2nd fiddle to Ronaldo. Look at Gareth Bale, he hasn't reproduced the scintillating form that made him the world's most expensive player. And as to Neymer not being world class I disagree, and if hypothetically speaking, Neymer was available for £60-70m, and we had the money to spend and going for him, I would be over the moon.

Have thought about the reason Ken regarding been aware of all the leagues - but we all read the magazines when growing up and many of us were aware of some of these good players from other countries. But looking at the world now i dont see the talent of depenable players out there.

10 years ago who were the world class players?
20 years ago who where the world class players?

What you have today are two players who significantly better than anybody else. The skews peoples thoughts on what is or isn't world class.

Seriously? You should start a thread, like a counting thread, where each successive post is a world class player from those decades. You'll get to page 50 I reckon.

My post was a rebuttal of Moron's post. He was moaning at there being only a handful of players that could classed as World class today. So asking him how many was there 10 years ago and 20 years ago (which is in his life time), i bet he could only come up with a handful of players.

Modo / redhorizon2 - I actually don't think Messi/Ronaldo are that great - I actually think that their lopsided league makes them look great. There have been great players in the last decade and the decade before that ... so on backwards. When I mean great players I mean players in all different positions who have made a significant contribution to the teams that they have played in and also on the international stage - with a high level of consistency. If we take the years from 1995 - 2005 we witnessed so many great players in world football:-

Defenders - of the likes of Canavaro, Nesta, Maldini, Marcel Desailly, Hierro, plus many more who were outstanding, it was a very defensive game in the 90's.

Attacking players who were consistently good include some of our very own in their prime but to name a few:-

Ronaldo, Rivaldo, Ronaldhinio, Romario, Henry , Bagio, Ibrahmovich, Shearer, Andriy Shevchenko , Fowler, Owen, Dennis Bergkamp, Zola, Davor Suker, Batistuta, Vieri, Alesandro, Raul

Wonderful midfield players:- - Viera, Keane, Gerrard, Cantona, Ginola, Kaka, Pirlo, Juninho, Mathaus, Figo, Zidanne, Figo, Redondo

The list could go on - but players that made a difference to teams who on their day were as good as any of their rivals. These days it seems like they are all just situated in fucking Madrid and Barcalona. Apologies for missing many who should be on that list - but I am sure many of you will agree with me that the players I have listed have given many of you great joy. Fuck me - what a shit era of football are we living in right now.

First off what has Modo got to do with any of this?

Secondly, C. Ronaldo plays for a wank national team called Portugal. Lopsided league? He (and I hate to say this) almost single handedly won the premier league for Man U on at least one occasion. Other than that he was an integral part of Portugal's Euro 2004 team that made the final and the 2006 world cup team that got to the semi final. So he has done enough on the international stage imo.
Messi might not have had any world cup joy with Argentina, but they did go to the final last year and almost won. OK, Messi's performances at the international level hasn't been stellar.

Thirdly, why the hell am I trying to defend Messi and Ronaldo? If you can't see that they're absolutely worldly and among the top 10 best players ever then you are (pardon my language) bonkers.

Wait wait wait....Ginola? Gino fucking la?
Juninho? Which Juninho? Pernambucano or the one who played for Boro?
Actually it doesn't matter. World class? You're having a laugh.
They were both entertaining players, top class players to be fair. But not world class imo.
Pernambucano could hit free kicks, that's about it. Little Juninho was a magician with the ball, but not that effective.
Gino, played for fucking Newcastle and won fuck all and what the fuck did he do for his national team except as Houllier would put it, cost them the chance to play in World cup 94.
