Liverpool will buy a centre-back after Joe Gomez suffers new setback

Young defender's hopes of a comeback have been dashed

Liverpool will enter the transfer market to sign a new centre-back after Joe Gomez suffered a crushing injury setback.
Manager Jurgen Klopp is facing a major defensive headache after the England Under-21 international’s hopes of a comeback this pre-season were shelved.
Gomez, who was close to returning to full training after nine months out due to surgery on a ruptured cruciate ligament, has damaged his Achilles tendon.
The 19-year-old defender looks set to miss the start of the new season - with the Reds waiting to discover the full extent of the injury.

The news comes on the back of Liverpool learning that Mamadou Sakho, who was cleared of a doping offence by UEFA last week, is facing around a month out with an Achilles problem.
Klopp was already in the market for a left-back and a central midfielder but a centre-back has now been added to his summer shopping list. Liverpool are expected to pursue someone at the more experienced end of the spectrum.

It’s a devastating blow for Gomez, who joined the Reds from Charlton Athletic for an initial fee of £3.5million a year ago. He quickly established himself and made seven appearances before an injury suffered on international duty cruelly wrecked his campaign shortly after Klopp’s appointment.
He worked tiressly on his rehabilitation with the club’s medical and sports science staff at Melwood over the summer in an attempt to ensure he would be ready to play a part in pre-season.

Klopp’s centre-back options have been severely depleted with Kolo Toure being released and Martin Skrtel completing a £5.5million move to Fenerbahce.
With the extended absence of both Sakho and Gomez, Klopp has just two fit senior centre-backs in Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren.
Andre Wisdom and Tiago Ilori can provide cover but both face uncertain futures at Anfield. Ilori isn’t an option for the start of the season as he will be away with Portugal at the Olympics.

Guess that means we'll be selling Ilori then, what with him going to the Olympics

Shit luck that.

Give Toure a pay as you play contract and whack him on a staff role afterwards

Fucking hell. This will seriously damage his chances of becoming a top player and raises questions on whether the decision to release Toure was the correct one.

9 months apparently, fuck, awful luck for the kid.

That's just an estimate. I don't think he's been fully checked yet. It could be as little as a month, or as you say at the other end of the scale six to eight months. Let's hope it's not as bad as feared. As for getting another CB, it will be a gamble to add another one long term to the books. Maybe a season-long loan of an experienced player would be better, though I'm not sure who's available.

Is Caulker still here? 🙂

Let's hope the injury is not as bad as it sounds.

I won't be surprised if we sign Ragnar Sigurdsson.

That actually wouldn't be a bad call as a short term deal. He's likely to cope very well with the physical nature of this league, and he's a mad Liverpool fan so he'd probably come for modest wages and have a good attitude.

Maybe his body can't cope playing top class football yet. You need to train so hard now at an early age that it increases the risk that a young player will get injured. The problem is that it is impossible to know who will cope and who will break down.

Unless he's torn it clean off then I hope it's not 9months out. Be interesting to see who Klopp goes for now, whether he goes for some veteran as cover, or whether he goes for a proper CB to provide competition moving forwards.

Is he still at the club?

Even if so, is he da man to fill the gap when he could only get game time as an emergency striker sub before?

I guess that depends on how bad the injury is. If Gomez will miss "only" two three months then Lucas will probably cover but if he will miss six seven eight months then he will sign a new defender.

It happens every year with Lucas. He knows he won't play much, rumours that he will finally leave, and then - amazingly - several players either leave the club or suffer terrible injuries and he's reprieved again

And a distant, do0m-laden cackle reverbrates around Anfield

Maybe someone should have stopped Lucas before he pissed in all the four corners.

Steven Caulker might be free
