Glen Johnson's future

It's wrong to say he is a liability and it's also wrong to suggest he cannot defend. He's done some brilliant defending for us at times over the years. The very worst you can say about Johnson's defending is that he's inconsistent.

I still rate him as a player and wouldn't be against keeping him on lower wages. A lot depends on Manquillo, though, and whether we are able to secure him, but I know I wouldn't want to enter a season with Manquillo and Flanigan as our sole RB's. There's not enough proven quality there.

There may be a case for keeping Johnson at least on a short-term basis.

Rodgers seems to like attack minded fullbacks regardless of the system so it's hard to see him limit his options to Flannagan, Wisdom and Manquillo all of whom are decent young players but....ya'know. And I'm presuming Markovic playing at RWB / RB is a short-term thing.

We probably need to replace Johnson with someone of genuine promise and quality but there are other priorities in the summer and perhaps it's a requirement we need to postpone.

Judging by his recent comments, Rodgers probably doesn't view Johnson as an attacking fullback any more. I am sure if Johnson stays Rodgers will try to convert him into RCB. The thought of which makes me shudder.

Offering Johnson a new deal really does make you worry about the people making decisions at LFC.

@mattladson we have to offer him a new deal under contract law - pretty sure @lovefutebol can elaborate

@RushianLFC @mattladson Failure to offer a new FTC (if original deal is over a certain length) is treated as dismissal in law.

This is bollocks isn't it?

That is correct. You cant treat people on fixed-term contracts less favourably than other employees, so you gotta go through the process of offering alternative employment within the company before letting him go.

Dismissal rights

Where a fixed term contract comes to an end and the employer decides not to renew it this is considered to be a dismissal.

Where you have worked continuous for your employer for more than 12 months you will be protected by unfair dismissal law. This means your employer must ensure that they have a potentially fair reason for not renewing your contract. In most cases employers are likely to argue that the reason for the dismissal was redundancy, due to the decline in demand for that type of work or due to lack of funding for on-going employment. Your employer must also provide the employee with a written statement of the reasons for dismissal.

There's an exception in the legislation and I would hazard a guess football takes advantage of it.

Otherwise players would never retire. We'd still be paying Harry Kewell.

Winston Bogarde would still be at Chelsea.

If Ayre's doing the negotiating, Johnson will probably end up with long term contract & a pay increase.
