You know the only thing worse than singing like a fucking tool on TOTP and making money for it?

Admitting you like Phil Collins and getting nothing but derision for it.

That really was terrible. It was like Nazis raping hamsters.

Or not getting Phil Collins played at a nightclub, throwing 3 punches, going to court and missing out on the Asia trip...

Hoddle = Decent Player, Shit Manager, Abysmal Pundit

You've obviously never seen him play then.

He was a wonderful footballer.
He certainly was. He had Xabi's passing ability, but with a lot more goals & a much better tackle & influence on the game. Oh, & he was more consistent over a long period too. Great player.
Foxy, Hoddle couldn't tackle his way out of a paper bag. Xabi would marmalise him in a 50-50. Nor was he more consistent - for every game in which he shone because of his admittedly sublime skills, there'd be another in which he went AWOL.

Hoddle is often spoken of as one of the greatest English talents. I'd go further and say he was one of the most talented footballers of any nationality that I've seen in half a century. If teams had been built around him, he'd have been a recognised all-time great. What he DIDN'T have was the ability to make a mark in a team, or an individual game, in which things didn't go his way from the beginning. Rightly or wrongly, you need that in English football.

I never WANTED to believe the claims that he was so insecure and vain as to treat players most like him with suspicion, but he DID seem to be strangely cool towards the 'flair' players. Maybe it all happened too early for him. Maybe a few years down the line he would have been more relaxed and positive. Not even his treatment of Le Tissier made much sense.
Yes, and it does seem odd considering that it is a fairly widely held view that he himself was overlooked at International level because he was a flair player. 53 caps doesn't seem like an awful lot considering how good he was.

As a manager people forget that he did a good job at Swindon and at Chelsea - in the days when Chelsea weren't that good. There were certainly not too many complaints when he was given the England manager job were there?
There certainly does seem to be a massive issue with how he treated players as individuals. That's the main criticism you hear about him and there are often suggestions that this is because he was a great player and doesn't know how to deal with players who aren't necessarily as good. Whether this is true, I don't know.

I think the bad reputation is harsh though and the tabloids have unfairly made him a laughing stock. Even after England he did fine at Southampton (I bet those fans who campaigned for him NOT to come back are really pleased they did so now!) and as well as anyone could at that joke of a club Spurs.
