Glen Hoddle

Ridiculously stupid statements aside, Hoddle was an excellent England football manager. I liked his brand of footy, he can certainly spot a player etc. He made a huge personal and professional mistake. That said, I happen to think other people have recovered from worse.

He was a good England manager, the team of 98 played good football and were unlucky against a very decent Argentina team. I don't know what the criteria is for giving people another chance, and I'm not getting into it, but, football wise, he's good enough.

Good footballer. Mediocre manager who flatters to deceive.

End of.

Easy tabloid view. His team's always played excellent football. I've no doubt he has massive personal issues but, as a player, and a manager, he could cut the mustard. Whenever.

Another flaw he has is he's a dreadful man manager. He seemed to resent up and coming talent (e.g Beckham and Owen), his treatment of Gascoigne (keeping him in the squad until the last moment and then dropping him when it was pretty clear he'd been unstable for ages) was almost cynical and he more or less snubbed Fowler just because the bloke dropped out of one squad to have his hooter operated on! But, yes, his team played some pleasingly un-English stuff.

Hoddle = Decent Player, Shit Manager, Abysmal Pundit
[/quote]That just isnt true. He has the all time BEST win % as an England manager. (capello excluded for now)

He was another England manager who suffered at the hands of over-expectant public whose faith in average teams knows any bounds. He contributed to his own downfall by his lack of faith in Michael Owen who was on electric form all tournament and was largely an unknown quantity - that should have been exploited earlier on.

However he was in charge of an England team who put in a fine performance against the odds against an Argentinian team full of talent. Had it not been for Beckham's idiocy he could have been remembered differently, but I guess he sealed his own fate after the World Cup had finished.

says it all when a fuckin sponsor gets u sacked. the bloke believed in weird shit, including reincarnation and karma, so what?

He was incredibly dim though when it came to the media. The faith healing etc was bad enough, but before that he signed up to do a breakfast cereal advert with his wife and kids and then promptly dumped his wife. He seemed oblivious.

Believing disabled people were paying for past sins and then choosing to voice it publicly is enough to get anyone sacked.

It's fucked up.

Excellent record as England manager which people choose to ignore. Yet Venables was deemed great despite just one excellent result in his tenure.

Imagine if a minority in this country got sacked for a religious view. Things may be slightly different.

I read somewhere that it's Ramsey, Revie and Space Cadet Hoddle in a tie at the top with 61%.

Keegan was bottom of the pile.

Capello 80%
Ramsay 61%
Hoddle 61%
Erikkson 60%
Greenwood 60%

Because being in the public eye carries a certain amount of responsibility, and voicing controversial views is, at best, misguided. It showed a gross lack of judgement and he paid the price.

he spoke of what he believes not what he wanted others to believe. millions across the world believe in reincarnation and karma. clear example of religious discrimination.

all said and done i'd rather hoddle as england manager than any of his english successors

I never said he preached.

The fact is no organisation or sponsor wants to be associated with controversy, and he paid the price.

As for his abilities as a Manager, I don't think it was a massive loss. Even Sven looked favourable to McClaren who seems to be the modern day yardstick for judging England managers past and present.

oh i agree with all of that, i just think its a shame that a sponsor can decide who the manager shouldn't be. just imagine rafa saying he drinks sol or something and carlsburg deciding they can replace him...(actually thats not a bad plan)

anyway hoddle was a good manager and upto now the last english manager who's teams i actually enjoyed watching. maybe capello can do a job but i wonder what would happen to him if in an interview he talks about his strong catholic upbringing and how abortion is murder?

You've obviously never seen him play then.

He was a wonderful footballer.

He certainly was. He had Xabi's passing ability, but with a lot more goals & a much better tackle & influence on the game. Oh, & he was more consistent over a long period too. Great player.

Yes, always good to watch. Not as tough as Xabi - that was always his weakness that was ruthlessly exploited by Souey and Co whenever he played against us - but a fine player nonetheless.

He wasn't a better tackler than Xabi mate.

I love his type of player; head and shoulders above nearly everyone in his era, totally at ease with the ball, and a fucking joy to watch. He scored a goal away to Watford one day where he controlled a throw-in with a Cruyff turn type thing, and chipped the keeper from the corner of the box. All in one movement. It was fucking sublime. I'm gonna see if I can find it on youtube.

No idea why I thought it was a throw-in, but anyway, here it is.

Genius.

I never WANTED to believe the claims that he was so insecure and vain as to treat players most like him with suspicion, but he DID seem to be strangely cool towards the 'flair' players. Maybe it all happened too early for him. Maybe a few years down the line he would have been more relaxed and positive. Not even his treatment of Le Tissier made much sense.
