He has to be amongst the worst defenders ever to wear red. Sure he gets up the pitch and puts great crosses in...but a very large proportion of the goals we have conceded this season have come from a GJ error. Last nights attempt to tackle was just another example. He cannot stop wingers from crossing, surely the most important part of a fullbacks role.

There is no way he should be anywhere near the England setup

I wish Rafa would play him as a winger where his talents truly lie.

17mil you're joking!

One of the worst defenders to wear read?

Come on. I know he was at fault for the goal last night, but that's an absurd exaggeration. We overpaid and he's to some degree a luxury player as he needs to be part of a solid team as things stand, but hopefully we'll benefit from him in the long run. Ditto Aquilani.

Carra has made shit loads of mistakes this year does that him one of the worst CH to wear red.

Come on, knee jurk or what

Johnson is class but nobody is perfect

Based on last night, everything is spot on. He was fucking terrible.

I would definitely play him as a winger and get one of the younger lads at right back.

I agree it was his fault for the goal, but in all honesty it was completely obvious he was absolutely shattered, even towards the end of the 90 he was struggling. Benitez should have taken him off.

I like him but i still don't get the logic of spending 17mil on him when we had other positions that needed addressing

Yes the goal came from his mistake, and that was crucial, but apart from that I thought he played very well considering he was out of position. Calling his the worst defender to ever wear red plain stupid!

Well said. A lot of the stick Magic's getting here is just loopy. He did good work at both ends of the pitch, but gets done for one goal - which shouldn't have made the difference it did, and that's down to other players (and the referee) - so he's pants? And part of the problem last night is that he's hardly ever played LB, so folks want to play him as a winger - which he's never done?

Get. A. Grip, fellas, FFS.

I like Glen Johnson. True, he might be weak defensively but I think it's one area he will definitely improve on. His positives outweigh his negatives by a lot.

I agree with people who say that the original post was very harsh on Glen.
However while he was playing out of position last night there still remains considerable question marks over his defending, even at right back. Although this did seem to be improving, and will hopefully continue to improve as he becomes more in tune with a regular defensive back.
The main problem for Glen seems to be the £17m price tag he brought with him that completely raised peoples expectations, not unreasonably, of his abilities. He is not as good a defender as Arbeloa or Finnan before him, but is clearly better than both going forward. with two defensive holding midfielders and the fact that we are(were) a top four side his defensive frailties should not be effecting us so much.

I know there was a poster here clamouring for attacking full backs but his name escapes me. Perhaps for him it is a case of "be careful what you wish for............"

John Arne Riise treatment for Glenjo?

He's a quality player, who made a mistake.

He won't be the first or the last, I'm glad he's a member of this squad. Also remember he was playing out of position.

At the end of the day, Athletico were there for the taking and we should've done more.

"Spider Neil, Spider Neil, 'spins' his attacking full backs theory".

Where is he anyway???

Except for that one mistake, I thought he defended pretty well in the main. He made some important interceptions and his aerial presence is definitely improving. As for his positioning - he is an attacking full-back and as such, he's going to get caught up the pitch from time to time. We can't have it both ways. We just have to make sure we can cover for him when it happens. (Which is much easier if Mascherano is in the correct position.)

Johnson is just useless at defending..........we've sold 'lesser' players that can defend better. God help England!

Josemi, Nicky Tanner, Torben Piechnik, Phil Babb, Djimi Traore, Igor Biscan, Bjorne Tore Kvarme, Stig Bjornebye, Jan Kromkamp, Pellegrino, Andrea Dossena, Emiliano Insua, Phillip Degen, Garbriel Paletta, Gregory Vignal, Jon Otsemobor, Jack Hobbs, Stephen Wright, Abel Xavier, Rigobert Song, Julian Dicks......

Johnson is a good player IMO and has been one of the few bright spots we have had this season

is this like the Gareth Bale argument, Spurs moved him to the midfield to make the most of his attacking flair but get help behind him in the defensive parts.

Forget Johnson's mistake for the cross, who the fuck was marking forlan, he was on his own.

Exactly. I thought Masher was at fault. Forlan ghosted past him unchecked into the box some 10 yards or so behind the centre-backs. Masher was the only one who could have seen him make the run but he just stood there and let him.

People are clearly going OTT with Johnson. Yes he has made a few mistakes but he can work on that. He isn't Titus Bramble. His price was inflated due to him being English, relatively young and current first choice RB for his country. Arbeloa wanted to leave and join the Madrid project so we replaced him with the best RB in the league.

Johnson seems to be used as another stick to beat the manager with. I read a great post a while ago about how we bought new wheels when our engine was missing. I think Sheik wrote it and he had a point to an extent. I don't want to sound like a Rafa apologist because I'm not but I doubt he would have spent 17million on a RB if he was aware the owners would withhold the majority of the Alonso money and the Keane money (held from the window before). Johnson was bought very early on in the window and at the time the majority of fans we're thrilled.

If people want to vent miss use of funds then perhaps Aqualani should be made the scapegoat just as much as Johnson.

That's what happens with players out of their position. Masher didn't tuck in and Glen was poor with is header. Both to blame.
Johnson should have done far better with his header.

I'm quite suprised as the carcass of our defeat is being picked over that critics favoured marmite Dirk Kuyt isn't being singled out.
I thought he was just dire last night in every sense. Poor first touch. That's a given obv, but couple that with a dreadful miss (for what would have been probably the greatest Liverpool team goal ever) a couple of other half arsed attempts when put through, constantly losing posession and worst of all his dreadful play acting to try and get another player sent off. It was rivaldo-esque and made me a bit ashamed given all the stick we've issued out to the playacting Europeans this year.
I love dirk but this was far from a high water mark for him. Some would say a nadir.

Substantially agree, but this was one occasion on which I had no trouble with one of our lot playacting. The Atletico player whacked Deadly upside the head and deserved a red without question. Yet another Scando ref f'cks up a big decision.

true and it was a massive shame we did not score that "Barca/Arsenal" style goal.

But, to be fair to deadly in any way we played him as if he was Crouchy, far too many long balls to his head.

Carra went back to route 1 so much it was pissing me off
