Six years without a trophy is not so difficult to comprehend now.

We have just gone 4 years and could very very easily go another 2.

Because he's a good manager with a proven track record of success at club level

Obviously, this is rather dependent on whether or not he hasn't gone a bit mental over the last 4 or 5 years, which is a possibility given some of his interviews

He's stepping into a no win situation though. The increased spending in the last few year raised expectations to CL qualification - now they need to trim the wage bill and may need to sell Young or whoever else will raise them some money in the summer.

If it was a club in disarray that needs a bit of organisation put on it then Ged might be the man. Villa don't strike me as being that kind of club, and his tactics are going to be pretty much identical to MON's, tight defensively and counter attack. He'll be expected to get CL qualification with none of the resources MON had.

I think it's a strange move for both parties.

I think they need to narrow their horizons for the time being and get back to being a solid side that are difficult to beat. Houllier should be able to do that, or at least that's what I think the idea will be for now.

Are Villa easy to beat now?

Ask Andy Carroll

OK, well they looked in danger of slipping, especially after getting trounced the other week. Not so much solidifying them as maintaining what they've got and keeping them from going off the rails.

I worry for Houllier's health taking this job, it's going to be a lot of pressure and its been some time since he had been at club level. Villa have never been a team I liked, but good luck to him and them!

Astonishingly, some of the Villa fans are having a shitfit and stating he's not good enough.

Since when did they develop Newcastle-itis?

Today it was mentioned he is trying to take Patrice Bergues with him to Villa.

Him leaving was more than likely the real reason why we went downhill rather than Ged's heart attack.

Ross, yes that might well be true. he was apparently very popular.

Bit like Benitez's reign going a bit wrong after Pako left.

What an absurd beginning :

Gerard Houllier's appointment as Aston Villa manager descended into farce on Friday as he admitted he has no idea when he will take charge.
The 63-year-old Frenchman was unveiled as Martin O'Neill's successor but confessed he is still to negotiate a departure date with his current employers, the French FA - and is yet to sign a contract at Villa.
Houllier compounded the sense of unease among Villa fans by revealing he has been turned down by three potential assistants.

He then scored a major PR own goal by describing his new team as belonging 'between seventh and 12th in the Premier League' - even though O'Neill took them to three successive sixth-placed finishes - adding: 'Villa is not a club on the same level as Liverpool.'
As unveilings go, it was light years away from the acclaim and excitement generated by O'Neill's arrival four years ago.
Then, 1,000 supporters had to be let into Villa Park to witness the event. On Friday, the media outnumbered interested supporters by a ratio of 30:1.
'I haven't signed a contract yet but for me it's a formality. My word is more important than what is signed,' said Houllier, who could be forced to serve three months notice with the French federation.
'I apologise. I can't get back for the Stoke game on Monday. I have meetings on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. The other thing is that if I don't do the three months' notice, maybe I have to go back one day and maybe spend time there.
'All I can tell you is that I will come. I spoke to the chief executive (Paul Faulkner) and told him there was no point delaying the official press conference. At some stage, I will be here.
'I will be at the Bolton game next week. I hope Kevin MacDonald will be alongside me for the Blackburn tie in the Carling Cup. My league start will be the derby with Wolves. But even that I can't promise.'
Houllier is still seeking an assistant after his Anfield No 2 Phil Thompson decided to concentrate on his career in the media.
Patrice Bergues, his former assistant at Liverpool and Lyon, is staying in France for 'personal reasons'. And a meeting on Friday with caretaker boss MacDonald saw the Scot declaring a desire to return to Villa's reserves.
MacDonald, who has been in charge as caretaker since August 9, will take charge of Villa at the Britannia Stadium on Monday and is likely to prepare the side for the two matches following that.
Other than confusion over Houllier's starting date, failure to attract a No 2 and an unwitting dig at Villa, it was an otherwise assured display.
'I had, of course, other proposals but this one seemed to be the most interesting in terms of working conditions and environment,' said Houllier.
In charge for now: Kevin MacDonald
'But let's be objective and honest, Aston Villa is not a club on the same level as Liverpool. It's a club that according to me has belonged between seventh and 12th place in the Premier League.
'I have good memories of Villa Park, I never lost here with Liverpool and that is something I hope to change.
'Villa is a historic club which has won the European Cup. It's a club which has got good infrastructure and a fine team which is after one thing - to improve year on year.
'I want to take this one step at a time. It's gradual progress. The way to success is not an easy walk.
'However, Martin has brought up a good squad and this is one of the reasons we have a good base to work from.
'It's difficult to succeed him. But when it's difficult it's exciting.'
There will be familiar faces waiting for Houllier at his first training session.
But he scotched suggestions of rifts with former Liverpool charges Brad Friedel and Stephen Warnock - and John Carew after he swapped the Norwegian for Milan Baros at Lyon.
'I trust the squad and I trust the players,' said Houllier, 'I believe there is potential here to do something well.' Whenever that may be.

He will probably do well.
Solely because he doesn't have to worry about winning the league.

I wish him well, but I wonder if the job will suit him. I don't think they need the kind of root-and-branch dynorodding he had to carry out when he first came to us, and did very well. To me the Villa job seems more akin to that which faced GH at LFC after that first bit was over, and we all know what happened then.

Hmmmmm, Houllier did a marvellous job for Liverpool, but we all know that it ended poorly. I hope he still has what it takes because everything seems to be against him: like Jules said, Villa are in some respects in a better state than the Liverpool he took over, now he isn't sure when he will start, macdonald has snubbed a number 2 role, Bergues and Thommo have said no, and the fans are already underwhelmed.

He'd better start at a gallop because those fans can be brutal. Just ask O'Dreary.

Villa fans are generally some of the thickest I've ever met, especially at the Holt End.

Although their Newcastle banner a few seasons ago was amusing.

'Who's your saviour now - Ant or Dec?'
