GH signs two-year contract at Villa

It was reported earlier that Thompson has agreed to become his assistant too.

I'm not sure how good an idea this is for Villa, Houllier doesn't strike me as being what they need at the moment.

Pinocchio going there as well? That does surprise me.

Agree your second para. They need the pressure on them lifted, not increased, which is pretty much the mirror opposite of the way GH operates.

Because he's a good manager with a proven track record of success at club level

Obviously, this is rather dependent on whether or not he hasn't gone a bit mental over the last 4 or 5 years, which is a possibility given some of his interviews

He was an excellent manager for us for a while.

Might be able to do it again.
Well if it doesn't go well then he can always blame Ginola.

He's stepping into a no win situation though. The increased spending in the last few year raised expectations to CL qualification - now they need to trim the wage bill and may need to sell Young or whoever else will raise them some money in the summer.

If it was a club in disarray that needs a bit of organisation put on it then Ged might be the man. Villa don't strike me as being that kind of club, and his tactics are going to be pretty much identical to MON's, tight defensively and counter attack. He'll be expected to get CL qualification with none of the resources MON had.

I think it's a strange move for both parties.

I think spion owes me a pint 😉

Did you bet 200 pds that he wouldnt get the job, Spion?
Nope £20 at 10/1 odd that he would.

No room for sentiment here. Hope they crash and burn.

I'm in it for me. I hope they get the chance AND then crash and burn!

...because?

because gh will do for villa what he did for us when he first walked through the door, he made us difficult to beat when at the time we were a joke.

It's arguable that MON already achieved that.

Good luck Ged, as long as you finish below us. That being the case he will probably get sacked 😉

sacked for coming second? naw...

😉

I'd argue that it's not even arguable. They are hard to beat, that is when they're not getting thrashed by Newcastle.

I am sure when they win a cup or two, GH will be magnanimous enough to admit that it is MON team which won it.

Villa only lost 8 times last year, which stands pretty well in comparison to ourselves and 'bigger' clubs.

What Villa lack is a winners mentality. They crumble every year, usually towards the end of the season and the shit just hits the fan.

This is the biggest requirement Houllier will have to bring to Villa Park.

Alas poor Villa. Ged is yesterdays man of "potential" proven to be good, but just not good enough.

Yes, poor Villa indeed.

I think Ged will do ok at Villa. They have the big men and speedsters up front that he likes, and they're already fairly solid.

Problem is, what are the expectations? Unless someone throws a few more hundred million at them, they'll be coming 6th in the League and having good cup runs. Which is what they do now, isn't it?

Nice one.

houllier was never the same for us after that heart attack. i still remember that summer of shite when all he should have done was bought anelka yet he went and bought spit, zidane's white boots and salif shit. shame really as upto that point we had been getting better and better.

i can see him pushing for a cup final at least.

Short contract he's signed though, isn't it?

Two years says to me that neither party is sure about the other to really commit.

Whatever, he'll get them disciplined, difficult to beat; and challenging for the top six places.
