Reminder of life without Stevie G soon. Gutted. I think this could bring out the best in Coutinho - deeper, more central and more influential. I would not be surprised if Rossiter goes on the bench.

Well the people that wanted him dropped have got their wish now, hopefully the others are up to it.

Lucas and Allen next to each other was heinous last season, Coutinho staying fit is vital for us now.

be interesting to see how we cope without him..

Hopefully Allen has come into form... and in recent times we have faired reasonably well without him..

I don't see this setting us back much at all.

He hasn't even been our best midfielder this year never mind being close to our best player.

So, out of Allen, Lucas and Henderson, which of those uber talented lads has offered more on the pitch this season?

Have we got a MONSTER sized Rolling Eyes smilie ?

Go back and check the MoM threads. And check the assists and goals. Yeah, we are not going to miss him because Allen/Lucas/Henderson are all so much better. *smashes head against the wall*

Last season, Allen was in solid form and one of our best players until October / November. Lucas returned from his ACL injury, played 2 league games in August and then got injured and was out until early December. By the time he returned, Allen was already in a slump of form and carrying a shoulder injury that needed surgery. Allen's minutes were pretty much reduced from January onwards, relative to the minutes he got while Lucas was out.

Gerrard played 36 league games last season, partnering either Allen (earlier part of the season) or Lucas (from December onwards) mainly. I don't think Lucas and Allen got to play with each other often enough when both were match-fit / injury-free or in decent form to be properly judged as a combination.

I'm looking forward to seeing how the midfield three without Gerrard works out. Three tough away games await them and we'd ideally not have to test the trio against these opponents, but if they pass these tests, we'll emerge with a lot of confidence in the new year to push on.

Good points and arguably some excuses in there.

From what i remember from early last season when Allen and Lucas were in there next to each other it coincided with our worst performances of the season, they looked a bad partnership, it didn't work and presume Rodgers knows/remembers that as they have barely played together again this calendar year.

Hopefully its works out and with Coutinho there now it will certainly help those 2 look better as he wasn't around when they were playing together early on last season, Coutinho is so so important now, if he get injured again any time soon then we are fucked as no-one else comes even remotely close to doing what he does.

Our season would unravel pretty quick if that happened, we can get by without 1 of our main 3 up top, 2 of them injured and were screwed.

I thought Stevies bad form coincided with England needing to qualify for Brazil.
He's been very good since the Poland game.
I can't see how people are trying to put a positive spin on it.
With the games coming up it looks an unmitigated disaster.

From an open play point of view - I think this will be good for the team.
From a set piece point of view - hopefully someone can step up and delivery some quality balls
From a leadership/ taking responsibility point of view - this is a great opportunity for other players to look to show leadership on the field e.g. Hendo/ Allen/ Lucas

I'm not sure that he'll be a miss to our general play from his performances this season, someone like Allen should be more than adequate to provide that level of input. But he'll be a massive loss on the indirect free kick and crossing front.

Hopefully it'll give someone else a chance to 'lead by example' on the captain-front.

Not a great time to get another injury to players in the squad considering the games we've got this month.

Time for the squad to step up to the plate, which they have done historically for us. Even earlier in the season with Suarez missing, Sturridge did.

Yeah, I was trying to see the silver lining, by if Henderson is also out, what does our midfield/team look like?

If Hendo is out we could play alberto? Not sure how a midfield trio of him Allen and Lucas would do though. And I'm not sure if him and Coutinho on the same pitch would work either.

Maybe this is more likely?

.........Lucas...Allen
Sterling...Coutinho....Moses
............Suarez

No but it's exceptionally lightweight. Gerrard may not have been anywhere near his best but he throws tackles in & gets close to players enough to stop runs. Henderson does similar.

That said, if you look at that formation as Lucas dm & Allen in between him & Coutinho he could help negate that with a similar performance to last week, where he was strong in the tackle & composed on the ball.

It's only three more with Gerrard in the team.

It is, so we're drastically reduced without him. We basically have two people who can score regularly, and another who will get a few, the rest are stuck on one for the season.

We're missing two of the three that actually score multiple goals for us. The midfield we're left with for the Spurs game, is pretty awful.
