Gerrard for Aqua?

After tonight's quite decent performance, what do you think of swapping Gerrard and Aquilani, position wise?
Gerrard back in the middle with Mascherano, Aquilani behind Torres?

We need to switch the formation to a 4-3-3. We're losing out no matter who plays in that defensive two.

Maybe- or Aquaman in the middle with Masher (who he would need beside him). I still think SG's goal threat means that he is a better option than Aqua up there.

Nope. He's a central midfiielder. If we ever find some consistency and confidence, I'd hope Benitez will stop being a tart and play him in his natural role where his guile and craft will be a breath of fresh air after this suffocating two holding midfielder nonsense.

Mascher and Aqua in the middle is fine with Gerrard in front of them.
Aqua plays some nice passes and he can have Mascher for cover while keeping Gerrards attacking threat

Purple will score about 5 goals a season

Max

So no. Obviously.

That's one of those that will get dragged up in a few years time

Gerrard's better than Purple in any position, but we need to get Polio out of the side, so maybe
That was a sudden change of heart.

Said this ages ago. Would be the best move for both of them, and improve our spine no end.

I know it's an unpopular opinion, but I'm convinced Aquilani has more natural ability between the lines than Gerrard, who has done excellently behind Torres, but doesn't convince me behind anyone else.

Gerrard has to come back to CM with strict instructions not to get caught up in a DM role.

He can still get forward plenty but Aqua is a little risky at CM; he can get shrugged too easily and that would be an issue. His whole game with clever touches, some guile, quick brain are all suited to being further forward.

Having said that, Rafa will try to turn him into a DM with passing ability just like Xabi. I'm convinced that won't work at all and we'll end up despising him as a player not good enough.

I think....

---Gerrard----Masher----

----------Aquilani------
--------------------------

----------Torres

Is better than..

-----Aquilani/Lucas--Masher---
-------------
---------Gerrard
-------------
-----------Torres

Gerrard back in midfield would be a breath of fresh air. With Aquilani putting through Torres and the wing forwards with his clever passes in the final third,I think we'd improve our number of chances in front of goal instead of relying so heavily on moments of genius from Torres and Gerrard. Good passing, retaining possesion and good movement has been seriously lacking. A midfield trio of Gerrard, Aquilani and Mascherano could surely improve that?

I'm also very concerned about this

Hope not, his off the ball game is probably his worst attribute.

I think tonight we saw what Aquilani can do - although it was nothing special, it was an improvement.

And this improvement comes on the back of us trying to play some better football - more passing through midfield, instead of route one football.

He did a few good through balls which Kuijt did not read properly, had it been someone like Torres then things could have been very interesting indeed.

I still maintain that we have signed a quality player in Aquilani.

If we can sign more players who can play football the way its meant to be, then Aquilani will benefit and succeed.

I'd like to see him take some free kicks. He is more than capable of hitting em in from 20 yards.

I actually don't think Gerrard has the discipline to play as a central midfielder week in, week out.

Ability yes, but that's a different thing. I think he prefers the 'hole' role.

I've seen all his silky touches and link-up play at Roma so that's of no surprise. What was good to see today he was getting stuck in, dropping deeper when required to stiffen up the midfield.

Gerrard hasn't been doing in recent weeks, but then he is carrying an injury.

One thing - he either falls asleep when defending, or doesn't care much for it, cos he's a fucking liability at times.

Palacios ran off him twice, and created great openings cos our Italian was ambling and ball-watching. There's simply no way he can be trusted right now as one of a central midfield two. Especially against a good side. He got his hand held by Lucas at Villa Park, but other sides will work around him.

Very impressive touch and control going forward. An enjoyable calm presence on the ball too amidst some of the humdrum last night, but there's a fucking serious amount of work to do going the other way.

I think Macher is more than enough to be a solitary DM if our back 4 can be sorted long term. But unfortunately its looking like a Carra and Agger partnership will not work because of their lack of aerial presence. And it might be that Johnson does not fit into our team. Its almost like Aqua or Johnson, but can't have both; unless we are going to be too good attacking for most teams to handle.

I said from right when we signed him Aquilani should be the most advanced of a midfield three.
Yeah, but one has to score goals if they're going to 'own' that position, and Purple doesn't strike me as the sort that's gonna bang in 10-15 a season.

I think he could hit double digits. Fifteen would probably be pushing it. I do think he has the eye for a pass that will help Torres flourish again. Especially if we get some players with an eye for goal on the wing, such as Maxi or a back-on-form Kuyt or we buy someone half decent (HAHAHA... oh...), I like him in a more advanced role. We have the "best defensive midfielder in the game" (TM) so why can't we have Aqui in an advanced role and Gerrard still, have occasional freedom to rampage (albeit with his role being somewhat more disciplined than it has been for the past season)?

If he's not the man for that position, I think Benitez was foolish to buy him (at that price) over a player with a little more steel to their game.

When?

According to Wikipedia, he's played 163 top flight games for Club and Country, and has 13 goals in all that time.

I'd be fucking stunned if he got double figures for us in a season.

If he can actually remain healthy for an entire season and that season isn't a catastrophe like this one, I think he can. I realize those are two pretty large "ifs" but there you have it.
