Liverpool midfielder Raul Meireles rates his skipper at Anfield, Steven Gerrard, as one of the three toughest opponents he has faced in his career.
The former Porto man believes that Gerrard is as difficult an opponent as Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien and Barcelona star Andres Iniesta. The Portuguese is confident that he can develop a fine working relationship with Gerrard on the field as the season progresses.
"For a long time, I have said that Gerrard is one of the top three midfielders in the European game," Meireles told LFC Weekly.
"Along with Michael Essien of Chelsea and Andres Iniesta of Barcelona, he has been the most difficult opponent I have faced over the years. Now I am his team-mate. I think we can combine well together."
Meireles can also understand the pressures which face Gerrard as a local player at Anfield, with the Portuguese having spent the bulk of his career in his home city himself.
"I can sympathise with people like Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher because, like me, they are players who have played for the major club in their city," he added.
"That brings pressures that are difficult to deal with because when things go wrong, the local players sometimes feel the frustrations of the supporters a lot more."
