in the center of midfield.
I was reading a article in the metro today, in which roy is contemplating parterning the two in midfield.
thoughts? do you think if we did this we'd get over run in midfield?

I'm not convinced. We had Gerrard in the middle against United and we were completely overrun, but there is an argument that it could work against lesser opposition, particularly at home.

Teams seem to play through us these days anyways.

ha ha, true ;D

Where's the article?? Paste it here. Anyway, i don't fucking get it when Roy play Meireles further up than Gerrard...What the hell is this shit?? Has Meireles played as an attacking midfielder before?? What is Roy thinking???

Gerrard should be playing behind Torres or at right wing. Meireles and Poulsen in the centre mid.

I did say I was abstaining from posting on the FF until Lucas was sold or dropped permanently but I love the though of RM and SG together so much that I am making a brief comeback.

Both players are very good on the ball, both players can get forward to great affect, both players pass well and quickly, AND both players can tackle.

We wouldn't need an out-and-out defensive midfielder in place with RM & SG together as they both tackle well and are responsible enough players to realise that they can't both attack regularly at the same time.

Babel----------------Meireles----------------Gerrard-----------------Cole
-------------------------------Pacheco---------------------------------------
--------------------------------------Torres--------------------------------

Babel--------------Meireles------------------Gerrard--------------Cole

---------------------Kuyt----------------Torres-----------------------

Kuyt-------------Meireles-----------------Gerrard-----------Babel
-------------------------------Cole-------------------------------------
-----------------------------------Torres---------------------------

Any of the 3 options above would result in a top 4 finish.

I'd sooner poulsen weren't in the team to be perfectly honest...

basically if roy does indeed partner meireles with gerrard in the middle of the park then when everyone is fit the only position up for grabs is left midfield.

6 outfield positions
1. torres
2. gerrard
3. cole
4. kuyt
5. meireles
6. ???

That's a very good post and is a reminder that we do have plenty of good players and lots of options. I'd be happy with any of those set-up's.

Roy hate Babel, so Babel will get less playing time and i can safely say almost the same scenario as under Rafa. We have Jova. He's a decent player. Play him.

Playing our best two central midfielders, together, in central midfield. hmmmm you may be on to something there Roy.

it's not a matter of them being the best it's a matter of can they both effectively sheild the defense.
to be fair poulsen and lucas, two dedicated holding midfielders have hardly done a bang up job in that department either.

I didn't forget about him at all, he just hasn't made the position his own (yet) and as such left midfield, imho, is still up for grabs.

I like the look of that team although i'd have Jovanovic ahead of N'Gog behind Torres.

The reason we are getting ripped to shreds in the midfield is due to our inability to control possession.

Raul and Stevie are both very nippy, creative passers with excellent first touch and vision. Both can tackle and both like a tackle.. I can’t believe there is such a focus on defensive midfielders at the club.

I can see the point in a designated defensive midfielder when they are as good as Mascherano.. but surely playing more balanced players that provide more both attacking and defensive ability makes more sense.... It’s not as if Gerrard and Meireles wouldn’t be first choice central midfielders at other clubs.

Jova should play more often, in fact i thought that Jova should've start against Manure ahead of Maxi who does fuck all.

Well yeah, obviously, balance and understanding is very important.
But as far as im concerned there's no better partnership available to us. If they are both fit I'd start them together every game.

We need players who can dictate the game and these two are very much capable of doing that. Having said that, so far it doesnt look like Roy believes we can dictate games. He seem to be stuck in to the Fulham thought, where we need to defend ourselves to get something out of games. Hopefully he will start realizing that he has some cracking players on his hands.

Gerrard should be playing behind Torres or at right wing. Meireles and Poulsen in the centre mid.

Gerrard's best position is centre mid, not behind Torres and certainly not out on the right. When he playes box to box centre midfeild he offers so much more coming into the game a little bit deeper than when behind Torres. I think the game against Birmingham proved this. Once Gerrard was moved back into centre mid, all of a sudden we had our best spell of the game. No coincidence there.

Gerrard's our best CM, but unfortunately at the moment he also appears to be our best no10/second striker/hole player/whatever. Perhaps Joe Cole will step up in that role, but as Spider says, if he does, that just leaves a ?-shaped hole at LW. It's perhaps worth trying a 442 with Gerrard and Meireles in CM against Blackpool or Sunderland, but it's ludicrously naive to say (as Pesam does) that if we play them there we will finish in the top 4.

I haven't seen enough of Meireles to know his best position or qualities, but I never really buy this 'let one go forward while the other one holds' scenario. It didn't work for England with Gerrard and Lampard. All it means is that one of your attacking midfielders is basically having to play as a defensive midfielder.

I'm not totally convinced by Poulsen so far, but there were signs in the United game that he might have the intelligence and discipline to play that holding role well, thus allowing Meireles and Gerrard to play their natural games. So, until or unless proven otherwise, I would say our best XI at the moment is probably:

Reina

Magic - Carra - Agger - Konchesky

Poulsen - Meireles

Kuyt - Gerrard - Cole

Torres

with Raul the more advanced and mobile of the two CMs.

Liverpool midfielder Raul Meireles rates his skipper at Anfield, Steven Gerrard, as one of the three toughest opponents he has faced in his career.

The former Porto man believes that Gerrard is as difficult an opponent as Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien and Barcelona star Andres Iniesta. The Portuguese is confident that he can develop a fine working relationship with Gerrard on the field as the season progresses.

"For a long time, I have said that Gerrard is one of the top three midfielders in the European game," Meireles told LFC Weekly.

"Along with Michael Essien of Chelsea and Andres Iniesta of Barcelona, he has been the most difficult opponent I have faced over the years. Now I am his team-mate. I think we can combine well together."

Meireles can also understand the pressures which face Gerrard as a local player at Anfield, with the Portuguese having spent the bulk of his career in his home city himself.

"I can sympathise with people like Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher because, like me, they are players who have played for the major club in their city," he added.

"That brings pressures that are difficult to deal with because when things go wrong, the local players sometimes feel the frustrations of the supporters a lot more."

Meireles can operate in any position in midfield. And is perfectly capable of playing the defensive part aswell.
I don't see what the problem is anyway, as Utd plays with Scholes/Fletcher and Arsenal fields duos in similar molds.

It's all about posession. And our ability or lack of to have the ball for longer periods of time and the attacking players to acutally put the opposition under pressure.

We desperatly need someone to play next to Torres who can hold the ball upfield, and play others into good positions. At the moment we loose the ball 8/10 times when it's played forward towards our strikers and that puts our side under constant pressure.
