Georginio Wijnaldum

Pointless away from home and only turns up at 50% of home games. Bit of a wuss who we should be looking to upgrade on in the summer.

He is good at receiving the ball and passing it on to a better midfielder. I think his problem now is that he's been here long enough to know our midfielders are shit, which means he doesn't know what to do for the best.

He has scored some important goals, and when he makes late runs into the box he looks a threat. However, his role doesn't really give much scope for that at the moment so he tries to play it neat and tidy, linking defence to attack but can be a bit lost when we lose possession at the opposition launch counter attacks.

I think his movement and ability to press is a plus. His top level is a bit low for what we need week in and week out in midfield. Not surprised if Ox takes more and more of the games he plays today.

Thought he was very good yesterday. Like him as a player and hope he scores that away goal soon to get that out of the way.

For me he is too cautious with his passing this season – according to Squawka 48% of his passes are backwards or sideways (highest among Liverpool midfielders: Can 43% backwards, Milner 37%, Hendo 32%). His average pass length is shorter than that of the other midfielders and he's created fewer chances than everyone but Can. In other words, I think he is playing within himself too much – I'm sure partly it stems from the coaching instructions as currently his role in the team is to keep possession and feed the ball to the front 4. But I think he has the ability to do much more and maybe the arrival of Keita will give him a bit of a kick up the backside to try to influence games more.

On the positive side, it's nice to have a midfielder who is consistent, tactically disciplined and always available for selection. With Can's very much up-and-down form, age catching up with Milner and Hendo's need to manage a chronic heel condition it's nice to have at least one player in midfield who is reliable and adaptable to any system, even if he rarely delivers more than a 6/10 performance these days.

I think those stats are a bit misleading in that he usually plays further forward than most of our other midfielders which in turn should mean more backwards passes, shorter passes and a lower pass completion rate. Be interesting to see comparative heat maps to see if that is borne out.

Dear kfc please change the color of your avatar the Football Forum looks like a Man City site sometimes. Unless your a City supporter of course ,in which case Fuck Off. Posting twenty threads at once.
That's the default profile pic and to be frank I can't be bothered to change it. As to the frequent creation of threads, as I see it if I don't ask it someone else will. To give you heads-up I'll be creating the following threads:
Should Klopp change the style of glasses (which might help him draw out plan B)?
Why doesn't Milner get more games?
Anyone missing Lucas?
What's happened to Scandia, Irish and Scottish players in the premier league?
Should we replace the grounds keeper at Anfield?
Milner isn't boring!
Let's get Mash potatoes (referencing Masher)

So Captain Sideways is actually Wijnaldum and not Hendo. Modo will have to change his signature.

Yeah, I know about that and it's true that he usually receives the ball further forward than Can or Hendo and is often immediately pressured by the opposition. I'm sure this is by design as one of Gini's best qualities is the ability to retain possession under pressure. So of course those stats are not absolute, but I still think he could be more proactive in many situations, to move the ball forward more often and quicker. This is what I see Keita doing whenever I watch his highlights playing for Leipzig – always trying to turn and drive the ball forward himself or pass it off quickly. I looked at Gini's stats from previous years too – his passing accuracy was always very good (high 80's), but the % of passes forward this season is at the lowest point in his career, even last season was a few points better while in Holland it was something like 70% forward 30% back (and he played further forward then!). I think he's getting a bit too comfortable with doing just the safe stuff here because in truth Can and Milner don't provide very high quality competition; he has the talent to impact games more than he does now and maybe better competition would spur him to do so.

Should've been this:

Wijnaldum is the easiest footballer of all time to call. Because, everything that people say about him is true. And evidenced.
He's a beautiful footballer when the conditions are right, he's fucking useless when they're not.
100%.
It's hard to carry that.

My biggest issue with him is that he doesn't pass the ball Forward often enough and and it's always safety first.

Hendo for all his fault, at least has the balls to try a pass forward, with wini it's nearly always checking back and slowing down the play. He is a neat and tidy player, against the big teams this is more obvious. We need better options in midfield, even with naby coming in.
