Since this rumour seems to be gaining momentum - his own thread.

From ReadLiverpool :

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is interested in signing midfielder Gary Medel from Inter Milan, according to Chilean newspaper Triumph.
The 28 year-old Chilean international shone in his side’s recent Copa America final victory, a performance which apparently caught the eye of the Liverpool boss.

Medel spent time in the Premier League during the 2013/14 season playing for Cardiff City but left for Inter in 2014 when the Welsh side were relegated.

Triumph report that Inter are open to offers for the two-time Copa America champion, but are looking for a bid in the region of €15million.

Klopp will be hoping Medel’s physical presence can add some bite to the Liverpool midfield, as the Reds look to improve on their eighth-place finish from last year.

It is believed that talk between the sides have already commenced, which means further updates on a potential move may not be far away. Medel would be Klopp’s fourth signing of this transfer window.

I've watched Medel over 10 times, I really don't rate him. I'd be gutted if we signed him. I'm sure we can find a ball played DM who can also defend. He's also a lose cannon and gets carded quite often as well as giving away stupid free kicks.

So that's who he was watching in that Argentina-Chile game! The mystery is finally solved. As for Medel, he is a loose cannon al right but he is also a proper pitbull and you need one in the team. We've been too soft too often. I wish we got his Chile teammate Vidal, but Bayern will not sell him.

Any other suggestions for pitbull type players (DM only)?

He isn't even as good as Lucas. Even Pontus Wernbloom is better than him.

My suggestion would have been Mascherano but he isn't an option because he has already signed for Juventus.

I don't think you can afford to play with a pitbull type. The player must also be a very good passer or the playmaker will be marked out of the game. You need a Xabi type, not a pitbull type.

Not the most recent of stats but does show he's not that bad in passing.

"Medel is an extraordinary player in front of the defence. He has a heart the size of a house and wins back numerous balls. I think if we didn't have him there, we'd really struggle." -- Inter Milan manager Roberto Mancini, April 2015.

"Gary has so much desire to get the ball off his opponent that every time he goes into a challenge, he puts his whole life into it." -- Former Chile coach Marcelo Bielsa.

That doesn't even begin to make sense. Your suggestion would have been Mascherano, but we don't need a pitbull type, we need a Xabi type?

Hasn't medel played cb for Chile as well? Perhaps klopp is adding depth to DM and CB in one swoop

For free I'm not massively opposed

Sound like Lucas. You know the player that made the most tackles in the PL the last decade. The difference being that Lucas get a lot less yellow/red cards.

Yeah but medel isnt shit

He is average. Lucas is better than him. He plays for Inter and would most probably get a lot more yellow/red cards if he played for another club in Serie A.

Watch this: I guarantee you will start laughing after a few minutes. This is why both Inter fans and Chile fans love him. He is a modern-day Gattuso. A fat, short superman. Or a super-villain.

And if you're patient enough, near the end of the video there are some really lovely goals.

I dont like his name. Does not sound like a footballer more like someone from Eastenders. If his name was Carlos Silvermedal I would be like ok with it.

Wow. Love him. He's like Mascher if Mascher just ate another Mascher.

As mentioned above he was very poor at Cardiff. I couldn't believe he made the Chilean squad for the last world cup and was even more surprised when I found out he was playing CB for them as he's 5'6" BUT he was superb during the World Cup in that position. I'm not sure a 5'6" CB is a viable option in the EPL and from what I've seen of him as a midfielder he's not good enough (unless he's improved hugely).

Chilean Gary.....

it actually sounds like some sort of obscure sexual act.

"I tried to give my missus a Chilean Gary last night.... she wasn't impressed",

It would be an opportunity to add an emotional leader to the team, but this doesn't make too much sense to me.

As a Lucas replacement ?

I think it makes sense if thats the case. He's got a bit more to his game than Lucas. That said if he didn't do well a couple of years ago in the Premiership I'd be concerned whether he has anything to offer now.

Why is he fat though with the amount of running he does? I'm not sure whether a player of his profile will carry that weight well as he ages.

I really don't remember much about him at Cardiff, but I enjoyed the video. He certainly looks to have a lot of heart and dare I say Suarezesque tenacity. I'd love to see some of the above in a red shirt.

Here's a thread from last year when he was linked with us. Seems like a few people here (@FreshRed, @Gary25) liked how he looked at Cardiff and a few others (@Pesam, @Leo) thought he was poor. Predictably, @localny made a shit pun about his name and @King Binny posted the same picture with his passing stats with Inter...

I don't remember much about him in Cardiff, but they had a hopeless defense with or without him, so it's hard to judge a player in that situation. In contrast, Inter's defense was their strongest asset last season and helped them finish 2015 in first place (Napoli and Juve eventually overtook them in the 2nd half of the season). He always looks great playing for Chile though – that team is all fighters through and through, they bend but never break. Whether it's with Medel or somebody else, but we need to add this quality to this team – I'm happy to see that Klopp is thinking in this direction.

Yep. I still like him. Cardiff struggled for many reasons, but he was their best player. For Chile, he has been outstanding and defends superbly against quick and skillful players. And, he has the desire to win - a perfect fit for Klopp.

Not sure if he is a starter or fills the squad, but I would have no problem with him starting at DM against United, City, Chelsea, Arsenal away, etc. when we need a little more bite.

And, as extra (although short) CB cover, a good move all around.

Had a quick look at the defence he was 'shielding' and it wasn't surprising to know where those players are plying their trade at now.

Ben Turner - Burton Albion
Steve Caulker - QPR
Kévin Théophile-Catherine - Saint-Étienne
Andrew Taylor - Wigan Athletic
Fábio - Cardiff City
Declan John - Cardiff City (loaned to League 1 clubs Barnsley and Chesterfield for the past 2 seasons)

1 season at Cardiff over his performances for the likes of Sevilla and Chile? Besides, it was his first season in English football.
