Fran Crippen, a medal-winning open-water swimmer on the U.S. national team, told his coach he wasn't feeling well late in a race before he died in the United Arab Emirates on Saturday.

The 26-year-old from a family of prominent swimmers in suburban Philadelphia was competing in the FINA Open Water 10-kilometer World Cup in Fujairah, south of Dubai, but failed to finish and was found in the water two hours later, according to Swimming World.

The magazine said the water temperature was in the mid- to high-80s, and several swimmers were treated for heat exhaustion after the race.

Between this and the one that got gobbled by a shark in California, I did not really relish my swim this weekend.

when did this happen?

Friday morning I think, Santa Barbara. I guess it was technically his leg that got gobbled.

I've seen a lot of sharks recently, especially decent sized Mako shark.

I honestly think it's lap swimming for a while, as irrational as that might be, because it's not fun. I'm pretty sure looking at the group I swim distance with, one slightly lagging, losing form from exhaustion, and not a bone thin piece of mutton, the shark really doesn't have a choice to make.

I wonder if any of the swimming Crippen family do medicine?

That's got to be the worst surname ever for that profession.

Apart from maybe 'De'Ath'

Also amazing is the fact that he was found dead *TWO HOURS* later.

What the fuck were his team time-keepers thinking?

'Hmm, this is a bit over his usual time'

*one hour later*

'Wow, this is really disappointing! Do you think it might be cramp?'

*two hours later*

'Did he get lost, maybe?'

'Oh, he's dead'

On of the water pits in the steeple chase should be about 100 ft deep, but they don't tell you which one.

If it's filled with water does it matter if it's 10ft or 100ft deep...?

No doubt the steeplechase could be livened up though. Perhaps crossed with the javelin to make both of them watchable.
