FIFA give vuvuzela green light for World Cup

Next year's World Cup promises to be a loud affair after FIFA rejected calls to ban the noisy vuvuzela, a plastic trumpet, from the event in South Africa.

The instrument's incessant drone drew protests at last month's Confederations Cup in South Africa, with broadcasters complaining it was drowning out their commentary and some players saying they could not communicate over it.

"That would mean one would have to take away the cow bells from Swiss fans and ban English fans from singing," Hans Klaus, director of communications at world soccer's governing body, told reporters on Friday.

"We approach this in a relaxed manner. I am convinced the vuvuzelas will be a hit at the World Cup. It will be a World Cup with African sound."

After a barrage of complaints about the instrument, a regular fixture at domestic matches in South Africa, FIFA pledged to discuss whether the vuvuzela had a place at the World Cup.

Vuvuzelas, given away free to fans at the Confederations Cup, were a constant background sound in all matches.

Spain midfielder Xabi Alonso was one of the critics at the time.

"I think they should be banned. They make it very difficult for the players to communicate with each other and to concentrate," he said.

What kind of halfwit cunt advisory board joke they are.

That fucking horn made me turn my TV volume down to almost zero.

Fuck, honestly this is a really simple, stupid mistake.

Blah blah blah cultural nonsense. It's called a fucking stadium horn. Look at this proud african man enjoying his cultural heritage:

Motty has retired from covering world cups, thank god. But those horns! They're not only mass producing plastic ones in Africa - I'm afraid they're doing it here, too. How long before the idiots at places like Pompey start hooting all through matches here?

At least adebayor will have something to dance to

That would imply some sort of rhythm... that it had some musical component, instead of just being a dissonant, obnoxious drone.

I'm all for having some nice drums and bells, but a noise that comes from some cunt blowing a monotone horn that sounds worse than a truck horn is fuckin unacceptable.

Hell it's in their back yard the fans should have the right to do what they usually do, it'd be idiotic to give it to them and then say but you have to do what the other continents are used to. right decision by FIFA.

If England ever gets the tournament I'd be all for banning those buffoons who play The Great Escape all bloody night.

It would have been an own goal if they'd banned them.
Good decision.

Are you for real? The fucking noise was blaring out, you could hardly hear the commentary & it was extremely unpleasant.

All you should ever hear at footy is people. No instruments of any kind. No horns, no bells, no drums & no fucking incessant african horns that sound like hornets sitting on the microphone.

Oh, & no pre-recorded anything either, like the shite Bolton play when a goal is scored, or the 'fanfare' the scum come out to.

FIFA would be violating their human rights if they didn't allow them to annoy the fuck out of the rest of the world wouldn't they ?

I can safely say I won't be watching any games.

Surely TV companies will find a way to stop it ruining the coverage?

It can't be that difficult.

Including YNWA before the game?

Exactly. Im sure they can isolate the sound of the commentry from these horns.
Its a bit annoying but come on its not that bad. It would have been really exagerated to ban them.
Its their world cup, let them enjoy it.

Yeah, but then there'll be no crowd noise. They'll simply fade out the crowd-directed mics, but the atmosphere that you hear in big games comes from that.

SOmeone said that when United come out they play fans cheering on a loop through the PA system.

There was some Youtoob of that Georgie.....pretty embarrassing.

Well I'm not watching the world cup then. I put the telly on to watch the semis (cos it should have been decent footy by then) and switched it off 5 minutes later. Yeah yeah turn the sound down yadda yadda, I shouldn't have to for a start and it annoys me not having commentary so it can fuck off. FIFA are fucking fags.

It's always irritating when people say 'just turn the sound down'. Football without the crowd sound is barely watchable. It feels like you've had some sort of stroke. It's like watching an English movie purely with subtitles. We should be entitled to a proper atmosphere.

I must be the only one then that doesn't mind them.
I found them irratiting at first but after a while the noise didn't really register with me any more and so it doesnt really cause me any bother.
Alternatively it could be a sign of the onset of middle age deafness.

Can you stand listening to the 'static' an untuned radio makes?

Don't give them away free, not everyone will buy them, less stupid noise, problem solved.

They are annoying tho.

I'm just wondering, Serie A in the 1980's was equally as noisy as this and even the sound is very similar.

Is it like that now?

Ha, so true.

Here's a quick way of checking whether you support a shite club or not:

If they play Blur's Song 2 or that God-forsaken Fratelli's tune after you've scored a goal, then yes you do.
