EDIT: I just noticed that you included Edberg in your list of 'almosts'. A bit of a kick in the teeth for the best volleyer the game has ever seen and a worthy champion in his own right.

Don't get me wrong, I loved Edberg but I didn't think he was in that 'class' of player overall. That he was the best volleyer, I agree.

He was easily up there with the best. Him and Becker are almost impossible to separate. Both former world number 1's, both picking up 6 grand slams each. I always loved it when they clashed at Wimbledon. Some real classics.

In essence though Del, you're proving my point about the era Sampras played in ... You just don't see that quality in Federer's era bar Nadal, who as he rose to 'hard court' competence - started to take away from Federer's 'invincibility'

So is Nadal going to win Wimbledon now?

I read somewhere that he might miss Wimbledon due to some knee injury.

Safin had his moments against Federer. Pity he lacked the mental strength to compete with a better player. That is the difference between Nadal and Safin. In fact i would say Safin is the more gifted player between the two......but Nadal worked his way to become better than Federer, while Safin wilted seeing a mountain in front of him.

But the point that Sampras had to play in a more competitive era can't just be dismissed with a "He is just that good" remark.

Players like Hewitt, Roddick, Safin, Djokovic are well below the level of What Sampras had for competition. You cannot really use Federer's dominance over a retiring Agassi as an argument, in a sport where you very rarely see 30+ players dominatong.

Just a month back, Critics were saying Federer is getting old at 27!!!

Safin has declared this will be his last year on tour at 28.....at least we already knew he is a quiter. So comparing Agassi's last years with Federer's peak is quite a bit of disrespect. Agassi is a far superior and natural shot maker than Federer, even if the whole world is in awe of Federer's style is doing the same.
