Showman Michael Schumacher sets pulses racing on his return

30k5dhf.jpg

The banner that hung above Garage 25 summed it up: Willkommen Zurück — welcome back. All that was missing was the fatted calf and a bottle of celebratory bubbly.

Michael Schumacher, Formula One’s prodigal son, returned to his spiritual home on Monday — the racetrack — and turned a dreary day of monotonous lap-after-lap testing into an extravagant party.

A pre-season warm-up that would usually have attracted the attention of only a couple of diehard Formula One fans in their bobble hats turned into a clamour to catch a glimpse of the most successful driver in history. Hundreds of fans poured through the gates of the faded Ricardo Tormo circuit on the outskirts of Valencia to see Schumacher back on duty for the first time in more than three years.

He may have retired in 2006 but he could never tear himself away from the one thing he does best. Like some fabled movie star, he kept his audience waiting while the supporting cast of Pedro de la Rosa, Sébastien Buemi and Nico Rosberg shook out the Formula One cobwebs and tested the cars that will contest what promises to be a riveting 2010 season.

Then, some six hours after the start of the first test session of the new year, there was the shriek of an engine behind the closed garage doors. Photographers and film crews gathered and fans gawped over the grandstand balcony.

Another 25 minutes, the doors opened and there he was, Schumacher at the wheel of his silver Mercedes, gently blipping the throttle. From then on, it was just like old times: 23 laps driven and the seven-times world champion was only 0.3sec off the fastest time of the day and almost a second quicker than Rosberg, his new team-mate at Mercedes.

“It was just like starting all over again,†Schumacher, 41, said. “I was shocked on the first lap, extremely excited in the second and then I just felt like a little boy with a new toy. I feel very good. I have worked out very well, prepared myself extremely precisely.â€

The only incongruous part of the scene was that Schumacher conducted his day in the silver of Mercedes and not the flame red of Ferrari, the famous Scuderia with whom he won five of his titles. Even Schumacher was slightly fazed as he followed the car of Felipe Massa, another man on the comeback trail after his horrific accident last July at the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Thankfully, the Brazilian was none the worse for his six months out of the cockpit and posted the fastest time of the day, just to remind Schumacher that there are new kids on the block whom he has to beat if he wants to add to his collection of records.

Mclarens are looking quite slow in testing about 3 seconds off massas pace! Let's hope there runnin different fuel loads.

Yeah, I wouldn't be too concerned about times just yet. You never know what set ups they are running.
As the weeks roll by and they all start clocking up the miles, it'll be interesting to see who is sitting on top.

The FIA, Formula One’s governing body, have agreed a new points system for the 2010 season.

Drivers will be awarded 25 points for a first place finish, the second placed drivers get 18 points with the next eight drivers winning 15, 12, ten, eight, six, four, two and one point respectively.

It is thought that a seven-point gap between first and second place, rather than the current two-points, will promote a 'race-to-win' attitude.

The top ten drivers on the starting grid will also have to start the race on the same tyres they finished qualifying with, while the double diffuser, a rear wing device that creates more downforce and was used to great effect by Brawn GP last year, will now be illegal.

Franz Tost, the Toro Rosso team principal, said: “It's a good decision to change this points system. The reason for it is we are pushing for more overtaking manoeuvres. We just hope this will be the case.â€Formula 1 will have a new points system for the 2010 after an agreement between the governing body (FIA) and the teams.

The Formula 1 Commission, a decision-making forum for the teams and major stakeholders, agreed the amendments to the sporting and technical regulations at a meeting on Monday.

The measures will be submitted to the World Motor Sport Council for final approval within 48 hours, which is usually a formality once all of the parties have agreed on changes.

Bernie Ecclestone, the F1 supremo, attempted to introduce a system where the championship being decided by race victories but the idea was rebuffed.

Imagine if football changed as much as this sport.

It's mental.

I feel sorry for car designers too. How can they design something year after year when the rules are constantly altering around them.

Yeah but it inspires fresh thinking, & innovation. Some incredible jumps in automotion technology have come form F1, in fact most of them have.

Fernando Alonso up to speed as Ferrari begin testing

Fernando Alonso's campaign to regain the Formula One world title with Ferrari began in earnest this morning, as tens of thousands of fans flocked to Valencia for his first public appearance for the Scuderia.

The two-time world champion, who left Renault at the end of last year, was watched by up to 50,000 spectators as he drove Ferrari's new F10 car during the first official testing session of the season.

Ferrari are hoping Alonso can turn the tide back in their favour after a miserable year in 2009, when their cars were both off the pace and difficult to drive.

Alonso, who will be earning about £15 million a year over the next three seasons, made a similarly high-profile switch from Renault to McLaren three years ago but ran head first into Lewis Hamilton in the British driver's rookie year. Alonso returned to Renault, having finished behind Hamilton in the standings.

Stefano Domenicali, the team principal at Ferrari, is desperate to give Alonso and Felipe Massa, his team-mate, who has fully recovered from the head injury he sustained last season, a thoroughbred car capable of winning a championship. And Alonso's first testing session did not disappoint - after 29 laps of the session, he had posted the fastest time of the week.

Michael Schumacher, who is returning to the sport after more than three years in retirement, was just over 0.8secs down on Alonso. However, the seven-times champion managed to shave half a second off his best time of the week as he continued to become accustomed to his Mercedes.

Jenson Button, the world champion, was also on the track and after initial seat-fitting and cockpit issues, was just over two seconds down, having completed 14 laps.

I'd say it is rediculously hot sitting at a GP.
Do they do combine other events Pat? Like a music festival, carnival stuff like that.

Gaylords. Didnt i win the league last year?

I'm looking forward to which bit of the Aero package will be illegal this year. My money will be on something that the Reds and Brawn dont have.

I really hope the races arent dull though, they should have made them like the motoGP's and not allowed tyre changes. If you cook them early, then thats your fault.

Formula One’s new entrants will be allowed to miss the first three races of the season without punishment, according to Jean Todt, the International Automobile Federation (FIA) president.

Bernie Ecclestone, F1's supremo, does not expect U.S. F1 and Campos, two of four completely new teams this season, to be ready for the opening race in Bahrain on March 14.

“In the last draft of the Concorde agreement it’s written that a team can skip three races,†Todt said.

U.S. F1 and Campos have so far named only one of their two drivers and neither have launched their cars for the new season.

Adrian Campos has said he hopes to settle the future of his team this week, having already signed Bruno Senna, nephew of the late Ayrton Senna, while Tony Teixeira, the A1 GP series CEO, said last month he was in talks to buy into Campos.

Serbia’s Stefan GP say they are all but ready to step in should a new team fail to make the grid and claim to have Ecclestone as a backer.

“If one of them doesn’t make it, it doesn’t mean another team comes in. It’s up to the FIA to decide if they have the credentials,†Todt, the former Ferrari chief, added.

Virgin have already launched their car while Lotus are set to unveil theirs on Friday, after Red Bull’s presentation at the Jerez test on Wednesday.

Mercedes unveils new gull-wing safety car

Mercedes has announced that this year's F1 safety car will be based on its gull-wing SLS 63 AMG.

The supercharged V8 supercar, with its doors hinged on the roof, will be the fastest F1 safety car ever and draws its design cues from the classic 1950s Mercedes 300SL. The road-going SLS 63 AMG has recently gone on sale with a list price of £157,500 and 571bhp. It has been promoted recently by Michael Schumacher, in a dramatic TV advert that sees the German drive upside-down in a tunnel.

Bernd Maylander will again be the full-time safety car driver and will get his hands on the car it at the opening round in Bahrain in two-weeks time.

Fuck!

We will not be able to provide F1 coverage in high definition this year. The BBC relies on Formula 1 Management (FOM) for the provision of all of its live pictures and as such the broadcasting of high definition pictures is dependent upon whether FOM uses HD cameras or not.

The most expensive, glamorous sport on earth & they dont have HD cameras yet. What a joke.

I was reading a few forums about this very thing during the week. By all accounts it will be recorded in HD, just not broadcast. That could (and should) mean it will be broadcast for the 2011 season. So the best we can really hope for this season is highlights or the end of season review.

That's even more daft. If they're recording in HD then broadcasting in HD is the easy bit!. Mad.

It could mean re-writing all current TV deals, the BBC did act quick in tying up the deal once ITV said they were opting out their final year. Could have been an easy oversight not to push HD content.

Just done some digging. Apparently only 3 tv companies are prepared to pay extra for HD so that doesnt justify the cost of switching, Bernie doesnt wanna front the cash basically.

Pity, cos I was looking forward to some HD races, possibly even 3D, cos F1 in 3D would be immense.

Still, back on topic, this looks amazing for tomorrow, Red Bull really pulled it out of the bag, having another car like that two seasons running is almost unheard of for one of the 'lesser' teams.

yeah, loads of interest in here!

Good starting race. Ferrari one two & Mclaren third. Good to see Schuey start to find his feet as the race went on too, give him a few races & he'll be pushing the car more.

Whether that'll be enough is the big question though. There's still a lot to find out about these cars. Should be interesting, the engines durability will also be a MAJOR factor. coming first in a race only to fuck your engine can mean you would've been better sitting back & losing a few points for place. Whether all the drivers can do that is questionable, esp in Hamilton's case, as all he wants to do is race. Speaking of Hamilton, an amazing race from him, some great driving, if they can tune that car he'll be up there.

Reliability cost Red Bull again.

Alonso will always be dangerous - and is my tip to win the Championship - but Vettel was cruising up until his exhaust failure. Real shame for the lad.

Pity.

I can imagine this season turning into a right snorefest. Its been built up and built up, but i fear the new rules are going to destroy the racing. I think the first lap will decide most races or a bit of adverse weather.

Todays race was fucking boring to say the least, cars just couldnt get close to over take for fear of destroying the tyres from the heat from the car in front. You seen it perfectly when Alonso got right up to vettel prior to him having problems. You could also see it when webber was behind button for most of the race. Now this is one of the more easy circuits to overtake at and i think we seen about 5 overtaking manouvers during the whole race. Lets hope this was a one off but i doubt it.

Well that was a great day out. I loved the F1 in Melbourne last year but this year topped it.

The race was full of incidents.

The speed and noise of the cars just cannot be imagined until you see it live.

I'm still deaf now.

I only watch the 10 minutes highlights of Formula 1 on the BBC website.

It's the only way to watch the sport with any pleasure (aside from maybe being there)

Is that a fact JJ?

Thank fuck that overly expensive, overrated, overhyped, over-indulged weekend of noise pollution is over for another year anyway.

It's shit, loud, closes half the fucking city down, LOUD, and only cunts go to see it. I had corporate tickets again this year, and still didn't bother going anywhere fucking near it.

A load of bollocks.
