Let's keep it here, folks. I think the premise of Ryan's thread is fatally flawed and has been discussed to death, so I thought it's better to start a new thread.

I was reading everything about this topic on my favorite Russian-language sports website Sports.ru and found this amazing blog post. The link is already Google-translated. For context, the author of this blog has been the Press-secretary of Russian Football Federation from 2005 to 2010 and a co-founder of Russian Union of Football Fans – by far the largest and fully government-supported fan organization in the country.

The only heartening thing is that most of the commentaries under this blog post are very critical and downright horrified by what he wrote. However I must note that sports.ru is a liberal-leaning sports website and "patriots" are in the minority there.

I wonder if FIFA will be tempted to use this, with their usual cynicism, as an excuse to move the World Cup. They wouldn't do so for mere corruption, as it would implicate their own blazered immorality, so this controversy might hand them the get-out of jail card they crave.

Yeah, Ryan's opening post was fucking shit, and laughably ill-advised, not to mention inaccurate and offensive. Needs locking.

A notorious far-right activist who has been photographed giving a Nazi salute is travelling with the official Russian FA delegation at Euro 2016 and was in Marseille at the weekend as clashes erupted between Russian and English fans.
Anti-racism groups have raised serious concerns over the fact that Alexander Shprygin apparently holds official accreditation with the Russia team’s entourage at the tournament. He also joined a Russian delegation that toured France’s host cities in March.
