Not sure if I should start a new thread on this, but I was thinking of how would 'we' fix Barcelona considering how poorly they've bought overall in the last few years. They just waste money on such unnecessary tools (Gomes, Turan, Digne, Alcacer etc etc).

They need to replace Dani Alves - that has killed them this year. They were never going to find someone who works that well with Messi but they fucked up royally but not replacing him.

They need a top CB - Pique is decent, as is Umtiti, but neither are world class defenders. Aldeirweld should be someone for them -

THey need to replace Iniesta. He's still good but he's clearly not nearly as dominant as he once was, and that leaves their midfield run over more often than not ... Another midfielder in the Rakitic mold to help out would be great for them too ...

I don't follow the politics and rumour mill of Barca so I'm not quite sure what the situation was with Alves but from afar it's hard to understand how it's ended up with Roberto playing RB for a season.

Is Vidal that bad? Why didn't he get more games (up until his injury)?

Barca seem to have a habit of buying players they have no real intention of playing because they can't really look past the same core set of players for every game.
 
I was thinking about this, this morning so some people do care.

If I was Barca right now I'd be thinking on freshening up the spine. As good as the so called MSN are, they could be due a a boy band style break up. But who goes?

In my opinion, the natural one to miss out is Suarez due to his age, but you could argue he's been the most productive this year. I mentioned it in another thread, but Mbappe could be a natural fit for a team like Madrid or Barca. So too Aubameyang from Dortmund.

Now to replace Iniesta, I hate to say it but Coutinho is a natural fit here.

Defensively, they need a new CB and a RB. I could see a Bellerin move for the latter, while they traditionally look inwards within La Liga for Centre Back options, perhaps Gimenez fits the bill here.
 
They've been having a bit of an existential crisis since Pep (and Xavi) left and I'm not sure they've found the right balance in terms of approach yet.

They're definitely a lot more direct these days, which is good for the front three but less so for the likes of Iniesta I feel whose powers are waning anyways.

How much will they have to spend? They've wasted an awful lot of money in the last few summers with little to show for it so it would be interesting to know whether they can even afford a massive spending spree without selling first.

Gomes, Vermalen, Turan, Mathieu can surely go but they'll all be at huge losses. Alcacer is worth keeping as he's a good player and still young. That leaves one of Neymar (who is persistently linked away for mad money) or Suarez if they do have to sell.

They've been strongly linked with Veratti and I think he'd be a good fit for them. They need someone who can own the midfield and dictate play from deep.

Coutinho would also be a good option sadly but I'm not sure they can accommodate both if they want to still keep Iniesta in the picture. An alternative approach might be to get someone like Keita - he sounds perfect as described in the other thread.

CB I think is optional if they can fix the other parts of the team. A RB on the other hand is essential but I'm not sure who they can get. Pace aside, is Bellerin actually that good?

If one of the front three do go, Mbappe will surely be high on the list.

Unless Veratti actively pushes for a move, I don't see that happening. Good shout on Keita, they need an engine. Bellerin isn't actually that good no, but he's a Barca boy, and they like to bring their own back.
 
They don't need too much work really, a couple of defenders. They do need a new decent manager with a proper philosophy though.
 
A tought on their departing manager. They have fine through a rough change where leaders and club legends has retired. He has still got results by stifting the style of play from involving all 11 to attack with MSN mainly. I think he got a lot out of that team.
 
I reckon Suarez has achieved all he can there. Time to come back and try on a real challenge - winning the PL with Liverpool.

Also I think Wegner should get the Barca job, they need his help

Isn't one if their biggest problems that there much vaunted youth system hasn't produced anything in recent years ?

Well, Thiago (sold) & Rafinha. But no one close to the level of the kids that made the team what it became the last decade.
 
It feels like there has been a shift in policy given the vast amounts of money being spent on unused squad players over the last 5 years.

Are the likes of Mathieu and Vermalen really that much better than Bartra (now at Dortmund) for example?

I'd say no.

There is also the fact that they got a ban, which might have disrupted the flow of players.

Zidane appears to be following in the footsteps of Pep at Madrid and giving youth a chance. Perhaps this will prompt Barca to look inwards again.
