The Gerrard thread got me thinking, if you were compiling your starting 11 in what order would you fill them? Who would be 'The first name on the teamsheet'?

I guess you can take it as a given that Reina is first.

Just quickly off the top of my head:

Pepe
Gerrard(when fully fit)
Suarez
Carra
Carroll
Agger(when fit)
Kuyt
Ming
Kelly
Johnson
Lucas(or Spearing)

So my formation would be a 4-3-3

Carroll
Suarez Kuyt
Gerrard
Ming Lucas
Johnson Agger Carra Kelly
Pepe

I guess id start by picking my prefered formation, and then selecting the best players for that formation (seems simple doesnt it EVERY ENGLAND MANAGER SINCE TERRY VENABLES)

I'd always want (when possible) to play 2 up front, but i like genuine width AND a genuine holding player so my formation would be a 4-1-3-2 kinda thing.

So Reina is my keeper of course.
Then Gerrard of course, hes our best player and plays in the middle of the three.
Suarez is next and has proven he can influence games so he goes in up front.
Dirk is next and i would play him on the right of the three.
Carragher at CB
Lucas at DM
Carroll at CF
Johnson at LB
Agger at CB
Kelly at RB

Leaving that problem Left Side.
Probably in a minority but id play Cole out there if hes fit.

I guess Meireles and Skrtel are really unlucky to miss out.

Totally disagree about starting with the formation. I would always start by seeing what players I have available and then pick a formation to suit them, NOT the other way around.

Not much point IMHO in picking the whole team until we see what kind of a transfer summer we have. In terms of the title question in this thread, for me Gerrard is always first pick if he's fit.

Are you running a fever this morning 😉

Reina, Carragher, Gerrard and now Suarez would always be the starting point if available.

The next tier is Kuyt, Agger, Johnson and perhaps Meireles.

The likes of Lucas, Kelly et al then fill in the gaps.

I've omitted Carroll because I don't know enough about him in a Liverpool shirt just yet, however is price tag probably dictates that he's an automatic starter in the first tier.

Kinda lost faith in him with considering all the injuries. Its understandable isnt it.

Reina
Gerrard
Carra
Suarez
Kuyt
Ming
Carroll
Johnson

The rest are a mix of injury prone or on the fringes of the team so it's neither here nor there.

Not sure why Reina must be first on the team sheet.
He is "just" a keeper after all and has less influence on a game than an outfield player like Gerrard.
No doubt he is important though, and keepers of his quality dont grow on trees.

I'd be of the opinion that the first name on the team sheet would be the player who's replacement is furthest away from him in terms of quality.

Has to be Reina, with Carra, Steve and Suarez up there too.

Formations (like "Best 11!&quot😉 depend on available players, form, competition, partnerships, opposition, injuries, tactics, etc etc etc...

It baffles me that people sit and type out "this is the formation we should play!" when it depends on 1 million variables and changes every week anyway.

Reina.

Well, obviously it shouldn't be taken too seriously and I'm sure most people making these best XIs do it just for a bit of fun and know the reality can be very different.

But why is it so bad to discuss formations?

We're obviously looking at what players we have available or will soon be available and wondering what might work.

Absolutely fine to discuss them, Avvy. What I was taking issue with was Oncy's view that you choose the formation first, then fit the players into it. To me, and Ryan it would seem, that's @rse about front. You first have to see what you've got at your disposal before you decide how you're going to use it to get the job done.

I think you're overcomplicating things. It's just our best players, basically.

Stevie
Reina
Suarez
Carra

And as keni(?) said, probably Carroll, but that remains to be seen, to some extent.

I agree with that JJ, but it isn't really that important for the purpose of this thread. For example Oncy's selection could easily be twisted into different formation like:

Carroll
Cole Suarez Kuyt
Gerrard Lucas
Johnson Agger Carra Kelly
Pepe

Besides the formation doesn't really tell us that much about how the team is actually going to play in a given match anyway.
