Fiorentina and Italy defender Davide Astori has died in his sleep.
The centre-back turned 31 in January and was the captain of the Viola squad, with 14 senior Italy caps and one goal to his name.
According to Udine Today, the player failed to wake up this morning when he was at the La di Moret hotel in Udine on a training camp with the squad, awaiting today’s match with Udinese.
The reports were spreading rapidly and Fiorentina released a statement this morning to confirm the news.
“Fiorentina are profoundly shaken and forced to announce that their captain Davide Astori has died,” read the statement.
“For this terrible and delicate situation, and above all out of respect for his family, we appeal to the sensitivity of the media.”

Prosecutors have opened a routine investigation into the death of Fiorentina captain and Italy international Davide Astori.

[article]Former Juventus man Dani Alves is ‘sorry’ for Davide Astori’s family but notes “thousands of children die every day, and they’re just as important.”

The football world is still shaking after Astori’s death on Sunday, but while Alves offered his sympathy, he confessed he was not hurting like some of his peers and found it wrong that the defender received more attention than the loss of life happening in the world daily.

“We weren’t too troubled because we didn’t know him very well,” the right-back said at a Press conference for Paris Saint-Germain’s Champions League last-16 second leg against Real Madrid.

“I’m sorry for his family. I think Davide did what he had to in this chaotic world, and now he’s in a better place.

“In the world, however, thousands of children, who don’t receive as much attention, die every day, and they’re just as important.

“We all have to die sooner or later because it’s something that passes. Maybe we’re sad, but certainly not like his family.”[/article]

Was this the full orange up the arse, electric cable round the neck getting found in a holdall behaviour then?

I heard that... and ok I'm just a nob and no doctor, but I'd have thunked a weak heart would be exposed during exercise rather than while resting.

Just as well you aren't a fucking doctor then isn't it. A weak heart can give out at any time. Never heard of anyone dying of a heart attack in their sleep before?

Yeah of course. But they're usually old and / or not professional athletes who are in peak physical condition. I can imagine it happening to me, after I've had a skinful of booze and being stressed out over being about to go bankrupt or something.

Yeah, weak heart isn't a thing for a peak athlete. It'd get picked years in advance.

Hearts don't get weak overnight

If I die with an Orange in my arse, electrodes on my plums and a Dyson on my cock I very much hope my family release the 'heart attack' defence

Defo. I felt sorry for the cunt when they said they're be an investigation. I mean look there was a bottle of poppers next to him and an umbrella up his hoop. We don't want one.
