Courting Madrid today.
Shame for our league if Ronaldo, Fabregas, Alonso etc leave......and great for Chelsea.

Is this a sign of the domination sliding, or the start of it?

I was going to start a thread on it the other day, but with all these departures, the problems over tax and the fact that our own players seem all too eager to court the attractions of Spain, is this the beginning of a new shift in power?

Im not going with shift in power yet. Not till i see who comes in.

If we get Silva, the mancs Benzema, arsenal sneijder etc then its at least a fight back.
With Fabregas and Ronaldo going though it is a bit worrying. It really only leaves Gerrard, Rooney and Torres as top TOP teir talent.

reasons behind it... Spain is arguably the dominant country in Europe both domestically and internationally in terms of honours and of course there is players wages...

this new tax rule to be implemented in April and the weakness of the pound against the euro will see players want to play overseas... more so Spain than anywhere else... Spanish players will be attracted, because its 'their home league' the stronger it gets, the more they will want to be part of it. Foreign nationals will be attracted because they get a low Tax bracket for five years.. (27% I believe). However their is only 2 big clubs with money in Spain at present... being Madrid and Barca... that will change over the next few years I guess...

Spain's la liga could be the new 'premiership' before long. Personally I think its good for football if we are to see a shift in power....

How?

I was saying in another thread. A.Madrid spent a lot of money as have Valencia in the past (they're fucked now though), but otherwise, who in that league is spending top dollar?

The Spanish and/or Italian leagues were always likely to resume dominance over the Premiership at some point, these things are always cyclical. I don't know if this is the start of that process but I guess it will happen at some point.
It will be interesting next time those leagues are more attractive to players than the Prem whether English/British players try their hand over there in greater numbers than they have historically. Most probably I would guess.

The same way why clubs like Aston Villa, Chelsea & Man city have been able to spend money... As the league attract bigger players therefore attracting a wider audience... Investors will want to become part of the game...

From a football fans point of view of course it's a shame when the best players leave England, but so long as we keep ours, I only see their departures maximising Liverpool's chance of winning the league.

As for a shift in power I can see the cause for the concern, but you have to look at the context involved of both Ronaldo, a massive Real Madrid fan since he was a kid, and Fabregas, who left Spain at a really young age and I'm guessing has always had a desire to return to prove himself in La Liga and try and force his was into the Spanish team, to see that their departures were inevitable.

The Champions League is the best indicator of where the best teams lie. Not until the Premiership sides lose their grip on the semi-final positions will I accept the shift in power from the English league to another.

From Footy365.com:

Cesc Fabregas has voiced his frustration at Arsenal's "impotence" after a fourth successive season without a trophy.

The Gunners have failed to win any silverware since lifting the FA Cup in 2005, much to the annoyance of captain Fabregas.

And the midfielder, part of the Spain side stunned by the USA in the semi-finals of the Confederations Cup in South Africa, admitted Arsenal's shortage of success was affecting team spirit.

"The absence of titles at Arsenal is what angers me the most," he is quoted as saying in The Lying Rag.

"Cristiano (Ronaldo) said he's leaving Manchester United because he had nothing else to win. For me right now it is the exact opposite, seeing the impotence.

"This year we wanted it, we were giving everything - but we couldn't reach the level that everyone expected of Arsenal.

"When you win, you're well. But when you don't, everyone is in a bad mood. For four years now, we've needed a title to regain our belief in ourselves."

Fabregas stopped short of saying he wanted to leave Emirates Stadium but insisted he needs to be "happy" during his career.

He said: "If I have to say I want to leave I will do it face to face. If one day I'm not happy, I am the first who will tell the manager.

"I admire Arsene Wenger but each of us has his own life and looks after his own interests.

"My seventh season is about to start. It's a lot when you're just 22. When you stop to think, you see that time flies.

"In football, you have to learn fast and take the best decisions for yourself and try to be happy."

The playmaker moved to Arsenal as a teenager from Barcelona but admits his family, all Barca fans, would not prevent any possible future move to Real Madrid.

He added: "Of course my family would understand if I signed for Real Madrid because they love me, they want me to be happy and what is best for me.

"They'd support me - whichever club I joined. My family will always be there for me - whatever decision I make.

"They're the ones who are always by my side

He's really starting to whore himself out now. Where does this leave all the "oh, I still have a season ticket at Barca blah blah blah" bollocks?

He's a Barca boy, I don't think he would go to Madrid.

But I hope he does, means they'll leave Alonso alone.

Possibly controversial, but is he actually THAT good? What does he do to make him worth £30m and the usual prices banded about?

He has a good game every now and then which sky cream over, then seems to be largely anonymous for long spells. Maybe I'm not paying close enough attention....

He's been inconsistent over the last 18 months or so, but before then he was branded as one of the best footballers in the league and he's still only 22.

Noroningooner(sp?) is in the best position to answer you, but with the markets the way they are, £30M is far from a rip-off.

I hope Fabregas goes, as it'll weaken one of our rivals and perhaps make Xabi less of a target for Real.

The resurrection of Real should also breathe some life back into the CL, which has grown a bit too predictable in recent seasons.

On another note, he looked like shit yesterday. Then again, most of Spain did.
He was the only one that looked decent i thought, lol.

And that article really only says that he wants to win and that his family love him. highly doubt he's going anywhere and a terrible performance from Xabi yesterday should go some way in suggesting he's not going anywhere either!

Ha, I was having this conversation with someone the other day. An old school Rotary Club chairman kinda football fan, 'I'm not all that convinced that he's actually that good', the reaction of the Arsenal fan was hilarious. There was no telling the old man either. Funny man.

In fairness, you wouldn't think he'd be very good, no pace, no real strength or presence, no trickery or ability to take a man on. But he's got a real football brain, excellent movement off the ball and a brilliant passing range. I like Fabregas, although his whining can get a bit tiresome...probably why Xabi tried to do him over again.

and if he does leave, who's going to be the one to throw food at Fergie?
I'm hoping one of our players could replace him in doing that ;D

Well, don't think he'd join a rival English club (just a hunch), wouldn't get into the Barca midfield ahead of Xavi/Iniesta, which, despite the old rivalry, would make free-spending Madrid the most likely.

If nothing else, you've always gotta love him for that.

Shift in power? I find this phrase a little annoying because its not like the Premiership has provided the Champions League winners for 7 or 8 times out the last 10 or something.

The spanish league can hardly be called dominant. For all the Madrid spending, and the awaited Barca spending, it'll be the same faces in the final 8.

Funny how little shat-ini and sepp-tic Blather haven't g spoken out about all this money the spanish are spending. Where the good of the game speach now?

The only thing that makes me want to keep Fabregas is knowing that Wenger wont go out and sign two cenral midfielders in one summer, which is obviously what we'd need if he left. It's been obvious from day one he wanted to return to Spain, i just think that he's found himself wanting to return earlier than he expected. At the same time, it's important to remember where these quotes came from - in a few hours he could do an interview and say he never uttered the words.

What really peeves me off about these "not winning anything" comments from him and Adebayor is that had they actually give a sh1t and bothered moving their arses (see Old Trafford CL game as example) then we might actually have won something

The not winning and not spending money seems to be a main reason for Arsenal players leaving, or at least what they are quoted as saying.
