Fabregas talks up move for Liverpool's Alonso

By Soccernet staff

June 1, 2009

Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas believes manager Arsene Wenger should consider a summer move for Liverpool's Xabi Alonso, adding that another midfielder is all the club need.

Alonso has enjoyed an excellent season at Anfield but speculation has suggested he could leave Merseyside during the transfer window.

Rafa Benitez dismissed such reports over the weekend after fresh stories regarding Alonso and a possible switch to Real Madrid.

Fabregas nevertheless admits he would love his Spanish compatriot to join him at the Emirates Stadium next season.

The Arsenal midfielder does not think Wenger needs to make many signings ahead of the 2009-10 campaign but feels bringing in Alonso would significantly strengthen the squad.

"We have lost big players, but the boss knows what he is doing," said Fabregas. "The days of signing a new player aren't finished.

"We need someone in the middle to make competition and make a difference, plus give us a new dimension. I think that is all we need. The rest is perfect.

"Xabi would be great. He's experienced and can score goals. I'm sure the boss is aware of that fact."

Yes Cesc, great idea, leave a team that were just pipped to the title - whilst also being voted player of the year - to a struggling team in transition.

Oh, and aren't you off to Barca you cretin?

Alonso can score goals? Hmmm. I don't know about that.

Barca would be stupid to sign Fabregas now anyways. They should just wait a couple years and buy him as Xavi's successor.

Rafael : Xabi's going nowhere.

Wenger : I don't want to spend big money. After all i have paid a lot for Arshavin.

If Arsenal enquire after Xabi, we should agree to him leaving only if Fabregas comes to Anfield.

They can have him for Fabregas, Arshavin and £20m.

I don't think Bunny fancies going on the dole much.

Arsenal will be priced out now.

They should've bought him for the knockdown £14/15M last summer while they had the chance.

Fabregas is already at a 'world class' level.

He's one of the best performers and most talented footballers in the strongest league in the world, and would walk into any national side were it not for Xavi and Iniesta.

Fabregas is class but inconsistant.

there are quite a few CMs I would take before him (any of ours for example) so he still has a way to go

Does that include Lucas, Headwand?

As rebel says, he's obvious class but inconsistent.

He hasn't really been performing for Arsenal at the level he's capable of for the last year and a half. We'd all take him in heartbeat, but I just think he's wasting his potential right now Arsenal and if Wenger doesn't add experience/manpower in the centre to allow Fabregas to play his natural game, he'll be looking for a move within the next season or two.

With regards to the article, Fabregas should be asking Wenger to sign a Mascherano/Essien type player. Xabi and him would really work as a 2 man midfield. They'd need to get a Mascher-type still anyway.

Its funny how Wenger let Diarra go. You'd have thought he would have been perfect.

I think Diaby would be a better bet to play central with Fabregas but Wenger has a hard on for Denilson doesn't he?

Barry would be a better option for Arse, as opposed to Xabi.

He's a tough nut and more than capable to hold a midfield together.

Surprising as Wenger has a great eye for talent. But I think he got caught up in his own romanticism of how football should be played. Trying to get away with attacking midfielders in the centre of the park. Yeah, in an ideal world, it sounds great. But realistically, you need a Mascher type if your team is going to be offensive.

Xavi and Iniesta, as great as they are (and they are amongst the world's best) NEED a Yaya Toure or Bousquets. Sure, they're not half as talented, but it allows the two little spanish magicians to concentrate on doing what they do best. This is where Arsenal fall down. They've got Fabregas and Denilson (a much maligned played with very good potential) doing the donkey work that a defensive midfielder should be doing.

As for Diaby. Potentially a top player, but right now, he's very a poor team player. He can look like Vieira and then Sissoko in the space of 10 seconds. But I think his main problem though is that he thinks he's an attacking midfielder. The boy's got no discipline in his game, which is why Wenger has used him as a support striker and left midfielder. Anywhere but the centre of the park.

Meh, he's alright.

As a bit of curveball, I think Fabregas holds Arsenal back when played in an attacking capacity. He's a great player in his own right, but he seems to have encouraged Wenger to change Arsenal's whole mentality just to suit Fabregas. Arsenal play too much in front of you nowawdays. Wenger really has abandoned what made him successful. Which was buying attacking players who were big, quick and/or powerful (Vieira, Pires, Anelka, Henry, Ljungberg, Overmars, even Bergkamp had deceptive pace). It's no surprise that when they got pace in Arshavin this year, they began to look like the old Arsenal.

==

P.t.n. When I mention pace, there's an inherent assumption that it comes with quality/class.. i'm not talking about pace alone, other Cisse would be a top player. (although, even in his case, it shows that pace alone can get you somewhere in this league, whereas quality without pace (i.e. Morientes) can have you chasing shadows and looking rather sh*t).

I can definately see were your coming from. Cesc is a class act but i do think his ability, strangely, hampers us at times.

One of the best features of Wengers Arsenal was the lightning quick counter attacks. Although not the quickest Vieria could have powered forward with the likes of Pires and Ljunberg providing assistance. Cesc, on the other hand, plays at such a slow pace. The only way we catch teams on the counter now is when Theo receives the ball deep
