The Football Association have offered to donate the FA Cup trophy to the city of Liverpool as a tribute to the fans who lost their lives at the Hillsborough disaster.

The Mail on Sunday understands FA chairman Greg Dyke has been in contact with representatives of the Hillsborough families since the conclusion of the inquests last month.

The Hillsborough inquests found that the 96 fans who died as a result of a crush in the 1989 disaster, were unlawfully killed.

Dyke and FA officials will be guided by the wishes of the families and are expected to continue to establish whether they are in favour of the gesture.

Further talks are planned following the conclusion of Operation Resolve, the criminal investigation into the Hillsborough disaster

The investigation is expected to conclude in December or January. Senior FA officials have considered the FA Cup gesture for a number of years, but have always maintained they only wanted discussions with families to take place once the inquests had concluded.

According to official minutes of FA meetings that took place just days after the 1989 disaster, the trophy gesture was first considered by then FA chief executive Graham Kelly and fellow executives.

The minutes of that meeting were made public for the first time among a huge archive of documents published by the Hillsborough Independent Panel in 2012.

Incidentally this has irked some UTD fans and even some Bitters... Though it is being offered to the City of Liverpool not Liverpool..

'And maybe Liverpool FC can offer one of their European cups to Juventus'

'May as well hand them the premier league, league cup, europa league, champions league, club world cup, community shield, European championship trophy and the world cup whilst your at it too.. A real gesture would be to ensure something like Hillsborough never happens again but yeah give them a trophy instead'

'Rubbish Liverpool cannot have the FA Cup. That now belongs to the great ManU!'

'Is the open top bus still ready from last week ? will it allow them into the champions league next year ?'

The Mancs and the blueslime can go feck themselves, but this is a daft, patronising idea from an organisation still breathing a massive sigh of relief that it hasn't had its feet held to the fire over the crucial part it played in bringing Hillsborough about. They can stick their Cup up their fundament.

We will win the cups we deserve. If they wanted to do something good for the 96 they didnt have to wait until their lie was found out. Fucking disgrace of an organisation.

Tis a daft Idea to be fair...

Its like an underlying admission of guilt from the FA..

It comparable to as a kid getting a hiding from your Dad, he then buys you a Toy as if to say sorry..

But as I said in an earlier thread, what's it even mean? 'Donating' the FA Cup? Giving away one of the two replicas? Storing the official one in some Liverpool bank vault? Letting all the families get a piccie holding it before sending it back to London? It's not even a coherent PR stunt, it doesn't even make any obvious sense.

No, it's not like he bought you a toy, it's like he decided to make up for it by giving you a framed photo of your cousin winning an award.
