i think the draw was excellent we should be able to beat either of lille or fenerbahce after we ease our way past the romanian urea stinkers but the quarter finals could be more tricky strong teams like valencia,juventus,shakhtar,villareal are all champion league teams
 
Excellent draw. I'm hoping our form and our confidence have returned by the time we reach the later stages of this competition and to even win it would raise confidence in the squad for next season, regardless of the fact it's the Country Cousin.

Forecast for the 1/8s : Liverpool, Valencia, Roma, Hamburg, Rubin Kazan. Atletico Madrid, Benfica, Shaktar Donetsk.

The Europa is a decent comp with decent teams in it.

If we're in it we should try and win it, plus there's aload of dosh for the winners.

What a fucking shit cup, shit draw against a shit team. It is like getting a medal for taking part in sports day in Junior school. Totally disappointing.
 
We're in a "fucking shit cup" because we've been shit. So we qualify.

I'd rather have a Junior school sports day medal than going home with just my kit in a bag.

We might even be able to get some cash we'd otherwise be losing out on.

Disappointment is always easier to live with if you've got a trophy and some dosh.
 
The real debate is how seriously do we take it, and in turn, what teams do we put out.

For instance, I wouldn't want to risk Gerrard and Torres in the early rounds of the Uefa Cup. I'd like to see Aquilani bedded in, with Babel playing a few games and maybe Dossena, Kelly or Degen given opportunities as fullbacks. I'd quite like to see Johnson in a more attacking role in the right flank, too, providing he's fit enough.

I'd put out:

This may be stone age thinking but in the middle of a (so far) disastrous season we should just concentrate on continuity; God knows we've had little of it to date.

Get clever with rotation and tactics when you're in a command position with the squad depth to back it up.

Field your best to try and win a trophy.
 
No thanks, I'd be fucking livid if our better players got injured for the Europa Cup.

Achieving fourth is crucial this season and has to the priority. Whenever we've missed out before there's always been good reason as to why we'd bounce back up the CL football the following year. Now Manchester City are splashing their cash about we can no longer rely on other teams inconsistencies in terms of overall league positions, like Everton for instance. City will spend again and will be fighting for CL football every year. And obviously 5 into 4 doesn't go.

The financial implications of not making it past the group stages this year will hurt us. Missing out on it next year could be a disaster.

Although I'd be gutted if we lost anyone to injury in the Europa, I agree with you re: consistency. Plus, the field day the media would have if we got bumped by some nomark team from Eastern Europe is not something I wish to see.

To be honest, I am. It's not the Champions League and it's not as important as the League, but it's still a trophy I'd like to see us lifting at the end of the year.

i used to do late shifts Mon & Wed so was made up when that changed to Tue & Thurs. Then we get knocked into this fucking thing & I get to miss the first half of a match against some dodgy team on a shite channel with shite commentary.
