Essien would consider a move...

The only upgrade on Masher / Alonso out there. I'd be more than happy.

Michael Essien's agent claims the Chelsea midfielder would be willing to consider a summer switch.

Fabian Piveteau claims there are clubs interested in luring the Ghana international away from Stamford Bridge and has refused to rule out the possibility of an approach proving successful.

Essien is happy to remain with the Blues, and has given no suggestion that he is harbouring hopes of a move, but it appears that he would be prepared to listen to offers should an interesting proposition present itself.

Spanish giants Barcelona and Real Madrid would be difficult to turn down, and are prepared to spend big, and Piveteau admits a transfer to Spain could be a possibility.

"Some clubs are interested in Michael," he said.

"He likes Chelsea very much, but football is football and if Real Madrid, Barcelona or some other club make an offer he needs to sit down and discuss what is best for him."

Don't be ridiculous. My only hope is that this is true and Madrid/Barca cast their eye over him instead of Xabi/Mascher.

Essien coming in would be upthere with the Torres-deal.

Break. The. Bank.

Will. Never. Happen.

Realistically, if you are at a team like ManUtd, Chelsea, Liverpool - then the only place you could look to move is Madrid or Barcelona.

Not to Italian football or German football I would imagine.

There is as much chance of us signing Essien as Chelsea signing Torres.

Come on guys.

x2

I would absolutely cream myself were Essien to join Liverpool but, as mentioned, it has a snowball's chance in hell of happening.

Also as mentioned, hope Madrid go for him instead of pursuing/unsettling Xabi or Mascherano.

can you imagine essien and gerrard in the same team. fucking hell its a frightning thought.
we almost had him as well, (apparantly) gh wanted him but after the disaster of diao the board wouldn't sanction gh's move for another (as yet) unproven african midfielder.

One of my favourite players in the Premiership.

Although it would significantly weaken Chelsea, unlike Ronaldo, I'd kinda miss watching him play every week. I remember Lyon telling Chelsea you have to pay a "Gerrard fee" to buy Essien and thinking it was terribly arrogant at the time - but over time they've been proven right.

Paddy makes a good point - fingers crossed on that.

I would seriously consider that. Essien is IMMENSE.

Only two teams on this planet have any chance of signing Essien. He would make either of them a very frightening team.
[/quote]

indeed.

although i would prefer it if they were not to buy our mash at the same time either of those two teams with Essien on board .... flipping heck...

*pretenting to still play champ manager*

sell mashcer for 35m and sell alonso for 30m then buy Essien for 50m. Use remainder of money to buy another midfielder (Hamsik, martinez, or even consider a small bid for mark noble).

if offered that deal, would u take it?

I would take it, to have essien on our team would be amazing - he is better than mascher and his passing skills are respectable when compared to xabi.

He's not a 'holding midfielder' or 'deep-lying play maker' though. I'm not saying he couldn't work in our team but unless he's in a 4-4-2 you'd be restricting him somewhat. He also has a tendency to roam and with Gerrard already having free-licence there's a limit on how many players you can allow to do this.

It's a pointless debate really, but the bottom line is, I know Mascher and Alonso work in perfect harmony most of the time. For continuity's sake it would be ridiculous to upset that balance.

ur right its a pointless debate, but essien can play anywhere and be better than 99% of players in that position. He would be a better defensive midfielder than mascher and a better all round midfielder than alonso.

No way would he "be a better DM than Mascher", particularly not in our system, for the reasons Squiggles has rightly explained. I don't even think he'd be better all-round than Xabi, whose tackling is better than Essien's passing all day long.

Essien is a top player but in terms of playing style he's far more like Stevie than he is like either of the others. Unless Stevie leaves (which Heaven forbid) he'd be wasted at LFC.

this accusation of him roaming round don't really add up to much, he has demonstrated that he has the discipline to play in all sorts of positions, rb, cb and do very well. If he was ked to play a defensive midfiler role he would be better than mascher - the smae would apply to alonso. Essien is incredible. your suggestion that xabi is a better all round player than essien is laughable, alonso is good, but essien pisses all over him all day long. The only area that xabi might be better than essien is if they were both asked to play a play-maker role - then again I would not be surprised if essien wowed us with some amazing passes.

Why're you comparing Essien to both of them? He's not going to be a better player than those two combined.

Essien may be more of a 'complete' player, but the sum of Mascherano & Alonso's parts is far greater than Essien + Mark Noble to any club, and especially Liverpool F.C under Rafael Benitez.
