England's penalty takers

I would agree, if the statistics were compiled for the current set of players for England and Germany. Its not...

Although I like both teams, I find myself rooting for England as this represent the last chance for Gerrard and Carra...I want them to have a good one.

The Germans aren't better man for man, but they are a better team.

But maybe they shouldn't be delighted- I got this statistical factoid sent to me last night:

"according to Radio 4's (strangely engrossing) statistics programme 'More or Less' today, the German's have a 94% success rate when it comes to successfully scoring penalties in the World Cup, versus England's rather less impressive 50% rate.

Which, according to bi-nominal distribution, means that if Sunday's game does go to penalties, statistically, England have only a >1.4% chance of winning it."

I love that.

To be fair on England, I don't think we've had as many good penalty takers in one team before have we?

The Germans should go into the match as favourites, IMO.

They've got decent players, play as a team and have 'clicked' at international level.

But anything is possible in a game like this. The England players will be up for it and we've got some real quality in our side. My only worry is we'll have to score two, because Germany could comfortably put 1 or 2 past our defence at the moment.

I think the Germans will start favourite and rightly so.

I'm glad in a way, as adversity seems to bring out the best in England teams.

If we'd played Ghana no doubt we'd have been firm favourites with all the expectation that brings.

High expectation don't sit well with our fragile players, witness the performance against USA and Algeria.

JJ haven't you seen the psychic octopus? You cannot swim against the tide of destiny.

Apparently the octopus keeper has put a very large bet on Germany. He'll be squids in after the game.

Get yer money on the Octopus's next prediction.

Though any old cephalopod could have told you England were going to lose.
