10 years ago today we signed Fernando Torres.

81 goals in 142 games

For that first couple of seasons he was the best striker in the world.

I wonder how different things would have been if our owners had kicked on from then. Ironic that at the time they were asset stripping if we had invested a couple of hundred mill in players we would now probably be one of the richest clubs in the world. They would have been making that back every summer.

I hated him when he left but all the stuff since that came out has made me think what choice did they have (Alonso, Mascherano, Arbeloa etc) they must have seen how far we would slip before we did. We were never going to compete with Chelsea and Man United.

Shame he went to Chelsea, I guess thats the part that still sticks. But we had the best of him no doubt.

What a player he was.

I know what will happen next 'Fuck Torres' 'He downed tools' etc.

But what about those goals....
He was special.

I dont think ive ever been excited by a signing.

I had no idea suarez was going to any good let alone that good so it was different but Torres was evidently going to be a worldy (for a short while)

Once he opened his account against Chelsea you just knew he would tear shit up

Yep. Great player and comes across as a decent bloke. I don't blame him for leaving, we were a shambles.

But, yeah, those first couple of seasons were just sensational. And I'm not even a fan of the word sensational.

He was incredible, and the man love between him and SG was magical at times.

He had a boss song and it was wonderful watching a Liverpool team that, for at least two seasons, had one of the best strikers in the world playing the best football of his career alongside our greatest ever Captain.

And there was also Carragher, Alonso and Masher.

Shame we didn't quite have enough great players to compliment them and win the title that those particular talents deserved.

I sometimes find myself randomly singing the Torres song. I've didn't really get over it and have not really been excited about football since he left.

We could and probably should have won it that year, United have won it with worse squads or first XI's, the likes of Kuyt, Reina, an ageing Hyppia, Arbeloa etc were all players who were good enough to be in title winning squads.

Yah I do too but I keep on changing the last lines ...
went to the club with plastic flags
where the captain shags your wag
fernando torres just a cockney slag
na na na na

Great player.
Pity we blew it ... fucking Macheda.

One of my all time favourite players. What a man, what a player. My love for football took a huge hit when he upped sticks to go to those vile cunts. I've never really recovered it. It felt like a real ending of something special. Hated him for that, but hated in the way you hate a girl you still love after they dump you. Shock, anger, betrayal, bemusement, desperate for them to change their mind.
Also, 10 year ago? Fuck me.

Nothing but love for him from me. He provided two of my greatest LFC moments:
  1. His goal vs Arsenal in the CL Quarter Final. In the Kop - it was insane.
  2. I was on a train from Liverpool to Bolton away and the torres bounce was kicking off so much that I was certain the train was going to derail. He scored twice and the atmosphere was electric.
Brilliant player

Was pissed off big time when he left us for Chelsea ... but looking back at it, we got the best years out of him and I can understand why he wanted to move when he did.

The hatred was more to do with going to Chelsea than him leaving.

Those goals!! Fucking amazing he was.
Better natural finisher than Suarez?
Not as good an all round talent obviously.
Take a look at Suarez's 82 goals here and see if you're still as convinced about it. Unbelievable instinctive goals here:

Nope. It was only really with us, where Rafa set the team pattern specifically to unleash him, that he became that good near goal. Even for Atletico, where he was already a legend before we signed him, there were questions about his finishing.

I've always thought the downed tools comments were exaggerated. His stats were decent for his last season (and a half) and he was carrying lots of injuries and the team were pretty crap. Going to Chelsea was a dick move, but at least he was kind of shit there.

I think that even during that period he was top dog for us, David Villa was that little bit better than him.

That was a beauty!

I loved him when he played for us, and was upset when he left for Chelsea.
However, he did give his best years of football to us.

And just thinking of it, we were so lucky to have two really world class forwards in him and Suarez playing for us!

I hate him because I loved him.

This.

Having said that his impact was seismic both on and off the pitch. The way he went past Ben Haim and scored that first goal against Chelsea, walked up to John Terry and told him to stop yapping - a hero was born right there in front of our eyes. Then 3 weeks to a month later that hat-trick against Reading where he was kicked at every opportunity, stood up, shrugged, and just went about the business of scoring goals.
