Stewart Downing believes Liverpool's expensive rebuilding programme has now put them firmly in the Premier League's title-chasing pack.

Downing, with the England squad in Sofia for Friday's Euro 2012 qualifier against Bulgaria, has made an impressive contribution to Liverpool's unbeaten start after his £20m move from Aston Villa.

Craig Bellamy was the last Liverpool arrival before the transfer window closed, joining Downing, Charlie Adam, Jordan Henderson, Jose Enrique and Sebastian Coates in Kenny Dalglish's revamped squad.

They were added to the £58m strike pair Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll, who arrived in January - and Downing revealed expectations are now soaring at Liverpool.

He said: "We've certainly got the quality to challenge. It's going to be difficult because Manchester City have strengthened and have got a hell of a squad while Manchester Utd have started really well

"We've got a hell of a chance of doing it but we have got to pick up points and stay in and around that pack to have a chance of doing that."

Downing added: "No disrespect to the other clubs, but at Liverpool they are expecting to win games. You can see the expectation, spending big and having a pretty big revamp. We've started very well. We don't want to look too far ahead because you could slip up.

"You can sense the expectations. It was a difficult couple of seasons with stuff going on with the owners and that but now there is a buzz around the place.

"The new owners have come in and shown their intentions by spending good money on players and revamping it so expectation goes up and Liverpool fans always want to see success. If the team keeps playing the way it is at the minute then we have got a hell of a chance of succeeding."

And Downing has settled quickly at Liverpool under Dalglish, admitting the fact that the Scot was willing to pay £20m to sign him was a major lift to his confidence.

"I feel more confident as a player because the team at Liverpool is playing quite well," said Downing. "I'm personally happy with my form. I just want to continue that and hopefully if I get a chance with England I can play well and stay in the team.

"The fact that a man like Kenny Dalglish is willing to spend £20m on me does my confidence the world of good. He's put a lot of faith in me paying that amount of money. It does give me a lot of confidence. As soon as I went to Liverpool I felt quite settled, great club, great team and it's great to be part of it."

I really like Downing. The thought of signing Downing used to make me nauseous but I now think he's great. Yeah we over paid a bit but he's a fine player. Bit early to be talking about title challenges though.

I quite fancy the optimism but realistically we should be aiming for top 4, anything more is a bonus as I'd love to be sitting pretty at the top come May

I don't think it's too early to be talking about a challenge for the title.

But yeah, his yellow boots are absolute gash.

If we got 3rd this season Id be hugely impressed, the gap between us and Utd is too big for Kenny and the owners to claw back in one transfer window. Great that hes optimistic and bigging up his team mates ut personally I think we should just follow Kennys lead and not worry about the title until the end of the season, if we are still in the mix then great, if not well we know it was never the realistic target for the season

I don't agree. We're not *that* far behind United - on the contrary, we humped them 3-0 last season and we're closer to them now than we were then. Citeh will probably be their nearest challengers but even they have the job of knitting all those newbies together into a coherent team. Of course we're not favourites, but we are most definitely in there pitching. Aim for the moon and you might reach the stars.

Looks like were trying to recoup the 20 million in interviews. Downing is filling the club website on his own at the moment, an interview a day and each one gets more positive. He'll have us doing the treble next.

Good player mind

Expectation should be high and rightfully so. I love the confidence. That we've never won the Premiership is a disgrace. Time to put it right.

We are LIVERPOOL!

Totally Agree with you RolandG, its been tool long and this idea by some of us that we are not yet there has been going on for too long now, if we keep saying the gap is too wide then we will never win the damn thing ever. The one thing you have to congratulate the European big clubs in Italy, Spain and Germany is that they and their fans don't have these 5-year plans, they expect their clubs to go and win every season. I always start the season with the hope and expectation that we will go out and win all the competitions we enter into and for some that may seem unrealistic but I do not see that at all - I just expect !!! and yes its been a big dissapointment for the last 21 years when it comes to the league BUT I always have hope until its mathematically impossible.

Your Rafa imitation needs a little work. 😉

Is his first goal really that important? He's been great so far and unlucky not to score, he seems a top lad and he looks quality.

That first goal (when it comes, and it will) will be nice, but no more than that. Downing's fitted in exceptionally well on the field and off it. It's the collective effort that counts, and Downing's making himself a vital cog in that wheel already.

Well, we're already saying Carroll doesn't need goals. They've got to come from somewhere.

Course they have, that's not really the point though, he doesn't look blunt, he's been unlucky not to score so I don't think it's anything to be overly concerned about, the goals will come, they did for Villa and he's now playing in a better side.

stop talking about it (challenging for the league) and do it.
[/quote]

I think it's quite refreshing to hear Neil, at least we've got a bit of confidence these days.

to be honest I wish we'd just get our heads down adn quietly go about our business. win as many games we can and see where we finish when they tot up the points at the end of the season. kenny says the fans don't need their expectations managed, I disagree, title talk puts pressure on the team unnecessary.
